Hongdae is one of the areas I go to all the time, and every time I passed by Bap Jangin it was always packed with people! This time I got curious and finally visited, and honestly I was so satisfied that I'd give it a 1000% chance of coming back. The exterior of this Hongdae Korean food spot is pure clean simplicity. Parking around Hongdae is a bit inconvenient, so it's really a place you visit by public transportation, but it's super close to Exit 8 of Hongik University Station, so finding it and getting there is really easy.

## Inside Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch: seating and atmosphere

The interior of Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch is also totally clean and modern — honestly, just looking at the interior, it feels more like it'd serve Western food, or maybe a hip tteokbokki place, but the fact that it's 100% Korean food makes it feel even more appealing somehow.

There were plenty of tables with just the right spacing, and I saw solo diners, groups, and couples too, so it seems like a great place to visit in all kinds of company.

After going back and forth on what to try, even though there were plenty of à la carte options, since it was my first visit I picked the set menu and also ordered the steamed egg on the side — the steamed egg turned out great too. On top of that, sesame oil and roasted seaweed flakes are prepped at every table, and they were absolutely essential haha.

## Soft steamed egg, 3,000 won

First up, the soft steamed egg — true to its name, it was completely soft and moist, and you could tell from one spoonful that it was made with plenty of steamed egg. You can also choose the spice level for the stew, and I went spicy, which paired incredibly well with the steamed egg 🫢🫢

For the two-person set meal, you get to choose the stew, spice level, meat, and add-ons in various combinations. I went all out and chose the pork tofu jjageuli (pork stew) — Bap Jangin's signature dish — on spicy, along with stir-fried bulgogi and added potato sujebi haha.

### Stir-fried bulgogi at Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch

First, the stir-fried bulgogi! When you think of bulgogi stir-fry, a soy-sauce-based seasoning usually comes to mind, but here it was more of a spicy gochujang-style stir-fried pork, and the meat came out generously piled high, which was very satisfying.

The spicy, savory bulgogi stir-fry was pure honey when piled onto white rice, and the seasoning matched perfectly with rice, so it was really delicious.

First off, the ingredients themselves were really generous — plenty of spam, plenty of tofu, and on top of that plenty of pork, plus the added potato sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) was loaded in too. Jjageuli, true to its name, has a thick, reduced broth style that's amazing mixed into rice, and this pork jjageuli seemed like a perfect execution of that, so I was very satisfied.

There was even a tip written down for eating it the best way: put the jjageuli over rice, sprinkle roasted seaweed flakes and sesame oil on top, and mix it all together — this is truly rice's worst enemy (in the best way)! I picked the spicy version, and it was genuinely spicy, so people who can't handle spice should order mild or regular, but I usually like and prefer spicy food, so the spicy option was just the right level of heat for me — actually really delicious. And since you end up mixing it with rice anyway, the spiciness gets balanced out to just the right amount of heat, which made it even tastier.

## Is Bap Jangin Hongdae Branch worth a second visit?

It had been a really long time since I'd eaten jjageuli, and eating it this way was truly delicious — if you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Hongdae, Bap Jangin is a must-recommend. It's great value, each dish comes out generously portioned, and it tastes great too — genuinely a place where you can get a proper full Korean spread whenever you're craving Korean food. Honestly, I'm planning to come back 10000%, and even though this was my first visit, I think I'll be dropping by often whenever I'm in Hongdae and craving Korean food ⭐️
