I was heading over to Ikseon-dong and looking for some bread to eat casually when I stopped by Munhwa Bakery. There are so many pretty cafés these days, but for some reason, when I go to an old bakery or a neighborhood bakery, I always want to pick out at least one thing.

Munhwa Bakery is fairly well known around Jongno 3-ga, so I dropped in while passing by this time. I hadn't decided what bread to buy, but once I saw everything, choosing just one was impossible, haha. In the end, I picked three: an onion bagel, milk cream bread, and black sesame bread.

## What did the onion bagel taste like?

The first thing I tried was the onion bagel. Rather than a plain bagel, I tend to like one with a little flavor in it, so I was quietly curious from the name alone. One bite brought out that characteristic onion aroma, and it went really well with the simple bagel.

The onion flavor was not the kind that comes on too strongly, so it was easier to eat than I expected. Personally, I thought it would be nice with coffee in the morning or as a quick bite when hungry. Just one bagel, and suddenly I wanted to brew myself a cup of coffee too, haha.

## Soft and sweet milk cream bread

Next was the milk cream bread. This was exactly the kind of thing I like from the name alone, so honestly, I had been looking forward to it from the moment I chose it. When I cut it in half, the cream inside immediately caught my eye.

When you eat it, the bread's simple flavor is joined by the soft sweetness of milk cream. It does have that characteristic sweet cream-bread taste, but personally, it did not feel overly rich. Rather than eating a lot at once, it felt like something that would go well eaten little by little with coffee or tea. These basic cream breads are the ones you somehow keep reaching for, aren't they?

## The black sesame bread I remembered most

And finally, the black sesame bread. There are so many black-sesame desserts around these days that when I spot one in a bakery, I somehow end up choosing it. It had black sesame's distinct nutty flavor, so it definitely felt different from the milk cream bread.

After sweet bread, the black sesame bread's nutty flavor stood out even more, which I liked. Of the three, I think it would especially suit people who like that nutty flavor of black sesame. I actually found myself reaching for another one of these simple, nutty breads later on, haha.

## Why I chose all three breads

After trying all three, they each had quite a different mood: the onion bagel was simple and savory, the milk cream bread was soft and sweet, and the black sesame bread was nutty. So it was nice to choose several and share them without leaning too heavily into just one flavor.

There was also something I found a little impressive while looking into Munhwa Bakery. They say they sell only bread made that day, and provide bread they do not sell to underserved communities. Knowing that while choosing bread somehow made me choose each one a little more thoughtfully.

## An easy takeaway after exploring Ikseon-dong

There are so many famous cafés and dessert shops in Ikseon-dong these days that it can be hard to decide where to go. Personally, instead of an overly elaborate dessert, I also like picking out a few breads like this and eating them comfortably at home or at my accommodation. So if you are looking for a bakery around Ikseon-dong, Munhwa Bakery seemed worth stopping by.

It is especially a good place to stop if you have plans around Jongno 3-ga or need some bread for a quick bite while exploring Ikseon-dong. When looking for somewhere to eat around Jongno 3-ga, it is surprisingly useful to know a bakery like this instead of thinking only of restaurants. It works for a light breakfast bread, and it is also nice to take home as a snack.

Honestly, if I had to choose just one from the three, the black sesame bread stayed with me. Maybe because I like nutty flavors, it was the one I reached for most with coffee. On the other hand, if you prefer sweeter bread, I think the milk cream bread would suit you better.

And if I go back next time, I want to choose a few other breads that I did not try this time. I found it while looking for a bakery around Ikseon-dong, but rather than being a one-time visit, I think it would be fun to pick up whichever breads I feel like that day. Above all, the fact that they sell bread made that day was also one reason I would return.

For those days when you are looking for somewhere to eat in Ikseon-dong, have had a meal, and do not want to go too heavy with dessert—but still do not want to simply pass by—taking away a few breads is nice too :) You may go in to choose one bread like I did and walk out with three, haha. If you are looking for a bakery around Ikseon-dong or Jongno 3-ga, keep Munhwa Bakery in mind. Next time, I plan to choose breads I did not get to try this time.
