## In short

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is a Nagoya-style eel rice bowl restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, a 6-minute walk from Magok Station Exit 2. On a weekday lunch visit, adding just 1,900 won to the basic hitsumabushi (eel over rice) brought a lunch special with 2 pieces of umaki (eel omelette), and the charcoal-grilled eel was crisp outside and juicy inside. Kikukawa is worth a trip for anyone missing the hitsumabushi they ate in Nagoya.

I fell in love with eel rice bowls after eating one in Nagoya... so when I heard there was an authentic Nagoya-style eel rice bowl restaurant in One Grove, I headed straight to "Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch"!

## Where is Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa in Magok One Grove, and when is it open?

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is a 6-minute walk from Magok Station Exit 2, on the 1st floor of Building A in One Grove. It's open daily from 10:30 to 22:00, with last order at 20:50. Parking is available, and reservations can be made through both Naver Reservation and Catch Table.

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa's Magok branch has its entrance on the exterior of Building A in One Grove. Just walk out of Magok Station Exit 2 and head toward the center of One Grove, and you'll find it easily.

Even the entrance felt upscale and tidy. This is a place I'd wanted to visit every time I passed by, so I was glad to finally make it happen haha.

On one side of the entrance was a notice for events for the three chobok, jungbok, and malbok summer days (Korea's traditional hottest days). I'd love to come back for one of those next year...

## Inside Kikukawa: private rooms and how it works for group meals in Magok

Stepping inside, I noticed something unusual: the restaurant's name was lit up as an inscription set into stone? Neat detail. Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa, this popular lunch spot near Magok Station's One Grove, was apparently featured in the Michelin Plate in 2019 — a verified eel rice bowl specialist (it seems to be certified from the original Nagoya headquarters as a chain!).

![Spacious dining hall with plenty of seating](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-05-44jah-900.webp)

The interior was really spacious with lots of seats, so it felt comfortable. There was also a private room on one side. It looked like a great spot for a company dinner or if you're looking for a meeting place in Magok!

As soon as we sat down, they brought us cold water.

## The weekday lunch special: 2 pieces of umaki for 1,900 won more

The weekday lunch special at Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch adds 2 pieces of umaki to the basic hitsumabushi for just ₩1,900 more. We visited during weekday lunch hours, and initially we were going to order the hitsumabushi (2/3 fish), but the owner let us know about the lunch special.

(Umaki is a Japanese-style rolled omelet made with eel haha.) We ordered the hitsumabushi + umaki 2-piece set. Besides the hitsumabushi, the menu also had mentaiko hitsumabushi and ilpum hitsumabushi (1 fish).

![Menu listing the different hitsumabushi options](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-09-1l1bj-900.webp)

![Sign for the lunch special umaki set](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-10-1rfi2-850.webp)

![Menu page with sashimi and tempura sets](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-11-1xagg-837.webp)

There were also plenty of Japanese rice bowl options like sashimi sets and tempura sets. There's a course meal too, but you need to reserve it in advance, so keep that in mind!

![Neatly arranged hitsumabushi full spread](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-12-1oipj-900.webp)

After a while, our order arrived as a neatly arranged full spread. The moment the food hit the table, the grilled eel smell wafted up so strongly that I got even more excited for the food haha.

On one side, sauces were set out separately. They said it was some kind of curry sauce, and to dip the eel in it if it needed more seasoning. I felt the eel was already seasoned just right, so I didn't use it separately..!

## How Kikukawa's hitsumabushi compares to Nagoya

When I opened the lid, glossy eel was piled generously on top of the rice (/≧▽≦)/ The surface of the eel looked like it had been grilled to a crisp. It was surprisingly similar to what I saw in Nagoya.

![Glossy eel rice bowl revealed after opening the lid](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-15-h5hy1-900.webp)

Taking a bite of the eel, the outside was slightly crisp and the inside was juicy haha.

According to the description, it's grilled directly over charcoal, which I think is why it achieved that perfect crisp-outside, juicy-inside texture.

### Three ways to eat hitsumabushi

- Enjoy the eel's natural flavor as-is
- With toppings added
- Put eel + rice + toppings in a small bowl, then pour over dashi broth

![Guide to the three ways of eating hitsumabushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-16-12eyz-900.webp)

The first way is to eat it plain, tasting the eel's natural flavor. The eel itself was so good here that I almost finished the whole thing this way, but I held back and only ate half (which is still... a lot).

![First way of eating: the eel's natural flavor](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-17-1qyr5-900.webp)

The second way is to add toppings like wasabi and scallions. Along with the toppings, the side dishes that came with it were also delicious — yuzu-scented pickled radish and spicy, crunchy lettuce stem pickles paired really well with the rice and eel.

Lastly, pour over the dashi broth to make it into ochazuke (rice soaked in tea/broth). It's already delicious the way I photographed it here.

Adding in all the leftover toppings made it even more delicious. I wish I'd done that sooner!!

## What does the umaki in the set taste like?

![Two pieces of umaki included in the set](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-23-1ln5r-874.webp)

I ate the umaki included in the set in between bites of the eel rice bowl. The egg was moist and full of moisture, in a sweet Japanese-style rolled omelet style. If you normally like egg sushi, you won't be disappointed with this.

![Cross-section of the Japanese-style rolled omelet with eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch/unagi-kikukawa-onegrove-hitsumabushi-lunch-24-1y981-900.webp)

Maybe because I ate it with the soft egg, the eel felt even softer.

On our way out after finishing the meal, I noticed they also offer takeout — it seemed like a great option for special occasions or meals with parents to take home!

## Is Kikukawa in Magok worth a visit?

This was a hitsumabushi I truly enjoyed because it let me taste the real flavors of Nagoya haha. I'd recommend "Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch" to anyone looking for a great eel date spot in One Grove, or anyone searching for a room-style restaurant in Magok One Grove!!
