## In short

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a Korean restaurant in the Haksapyeong Sundubu Village in Sokcho, Gangwon, where a third generation now makes the soft tofu. After riding the Seoraksan Cable Car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress and coming back down, the writer returned to Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu for jjamppong seafood sundubu at 17,000 won, wild greens bibimbap at 13,000 won and abai squid sausage at 15,000 won, served with 9 side dishes. A hot bowl of sundubu here is exactly what settles the stomach after a hike.

I went on a trip to Sokcho, Gangwon-do. This time, I rode the Seoraksan Cable Car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress on Seoraksan — and it turns out riding the cable car isn't just about sitting back and enjoying the view, there's actually a fair bit of walking involved. After coming down the mountain, I somehow wanted something hearty, so I headed to Haksapyeong Sundubu Village near Seoraksan. Here's the story of my return visit to Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, a Sokcho spot known for jjamppong sundubu (spicy seafood soft tofu soup).

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, located in Haksapyeong Sundubu Village, is a genuine local favorite that started with grandmother Go Jinsol and has been carried on for 30 years across three generations. They make their own sundubu (soft tofu) and mo-dubu (firm tofu) with Korean ingredients, and cook every side dish in house.

Being near Seoraksan, it's a great place to stop after hiking. It's about 9km / 15 minutes by car from the Sogongwon parking lot where the Seoraksan Cable Car is, and just 2 minutes from Sokcho IC — convenient to drop by while traveling. On the last day of my trip I stopped by Seoraksan, had my final meal here, then headed home via Sokcho IC.

The interior is really spacious, so even a big group would have plenty of room. It's clean, and with lots of staff on hand, service was quick.

## The menu at Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu and the three dishes ordered this time

Besides various sundubu dishes and tofu hot pot, the menu includes haejangguk (hangover soup), bibimbap, baekban (set meal), and jeongsik (course meal). There are also sides like squid sausage and potato pancake. Every dish is available for takeout!

Last time I had the Jinsol jeongsik set, but this time I ordered three dishes: jjamppong seafood sundubu (₩17,000), wild greens bibimbap (₩13,000), and abai squid sausage (₩15,000).

### The 9 side dishes, with self-serve refills

Today's meal arrived with 9 side dishes — yes, nine! You can help yourself to refills.

Since all the banchan (side dishes) are homemade, they had that home-cooked feel and tasted great — the buckwheat pancake in particular was chewy and really delicious.

## Abai squid sausage, 15,000 won: moist rather than crisped nurungji-style

I hadn't had time to try squid sausage while staying in downtown Sokcho, so I was a bit disappointed — but then I saw it on the menu here and ordered it right away! Downtown Sokcho usually sells nurungji ojingeo sundae, known for its crispy exterior, but Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu serves the regular abai style — pan-fried in egg batter, so it's moist. Squid sausage is always good haha. It wasn't chewy at all, nice and soft and easy to eat.

## Sokcho jjamppong sundubu in a clay pot, 17,000 won: what seafood is in it?

The sundubu comes bubbling hot in a stone pot, which makes it look even more appetizing. A spicy jjamppong-style seafood sundubu in a vegetable-based broth!

![Spicy sundubu with abalone and blue crab](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni-16-18eae-900.webp)

It was loaded with seafood — abalone, shrimp, scallop, squid, blue crab. Nice and spicy, perfect for a hangover cure too. It was just as good as the famous places in Gangneung.

## Wild greens bibimbap, 13,000 won: five kinds of greens plus soft tofu

Making a spread of namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes at home isn't easy, so I went with the wild greens bibimbap — five kinds of vegetables topped with a fried egg, plus a bowl of soft, cloud-like sundubu on the side. Great value for the price.

Lifting the fried egg, I found mungnamul (dried seasoned greens), chwinamul (aster greens), doraji (bellflower root), shiitake mushrooms, and gosari (bracken fern)! Each is tasty on its own, but even better mixed together. Add gochujang and rice to taste and mix it up.

![Wild greens bibimbap showing five kinds of vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni-19-bu4za-900.webp)

![Wild greens bibimbap mixed with a light amount of gochujang](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni/seoraksan-cablecar-sundubu-jinsol-halmeoni-20-5zd72-900.webp)

I like my food on the milder side, so I didn't add much gochujang, which is why it's not very red. That let the flavor of the vegetables come through nicely, and the mungnamul was especially good. The sundubu that came with it can be seasoned with soy sauce — having a warm bowl of sundubu after hiking was really comforting for the stomach.

## Why Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a good stop after Seoraksan

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, a Sokcho favorite for jjamppong sundubu, tasted even better after coming down from Seoraksan. How about a hot bowl of sundubu at Haksapyeong Sundubu Village near Seoraksan after your next hike?
