## In short

Seo Jubang is a cooking bar near Yeongnang Beach and the pocha street in Sokcho, Gangwon. We tried flatfish makhoe with konowada, plus warm boiled pork and parboiled squid that the kids enjoyed. Verdict: a relaxed choice for a family evening drink in Sokcho.

While looking for somewhere to have an evening drink on our Sokcho trip, we stopped by Seo Jubang. We wanted a place near the pocha street where we could have a drink but also find dishes to share with the kids, and it was much more satisfying than expected. Seafood-focused pocha (casual Korean drinking tent-style bars) can sometimes leave little for children to eat, but Seo Jubang had kid-friendly options such as parboiled squid and warm boiled pork, so it worked well for a family visit too. The interior was spacious with comfortably spaced tables, so it did not feel cramped, and it also seemed like a good fit for anyone needing group seating among Sokcho pocha street restaurants.

## A spacious, comfortable cooking-bar interior

The interior was neatly styled in the modern cooking-bar fashion. The overall wood tones gave it a warm feel, and best of all, there were plenty of tables and lots of room. Bars near tourist attractions can have tiny tables or pack people tightly together, but this one felt quite comfortable, making it less of a burden to sit with children.

### A great location for a drink near the Sokcho sea

Seo Jubang is close to Yeongnang Beach and the pocha street. Its business information says it is about one minute from both the pocha street and Yeongnang Beach. Rather than heading straight back to the accommodation after dinner, it made for a lovely route to stroll slowly toward the sea and take in Sokcho's night ocean.

The sign was easy to spot from a distance, so it was not difficult to find. It has the kind of atmosphere where you can walk by the sea during the day, then come over here for a drink in the evening. If you want to enjoy both the sea and a pocha-style atmosphere on a Sokcho trip, the location is a clear advantage.

## Starting with a refreshing highball

![Highball garnished with lemon and herbs](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang-04-1jh3u-966.webp)

We started with highballs that day, topped with fresh lemon and herbs, so they looked refreshing too. I especially liked the Yantai highball. The distinctive aroma of Yantai gaoliang liquor was not overpowering, and it went down cleanly with the fizz, pairing nicely with the seafood dishes. For anyone who finds strong liquor intimidating, enjoying it highball-style may feel comparatively easy.

The glasses were cute, and because the whole place had that cooking-bar atmosphere, adding a highball rather than drinking only soju made the trip feel even more special.

## Flatfish makhoe paired with konowada

![Flatfish makhoe with vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang-06-3f52g-966.webp)

The first dish that caught my eye was the flatfish makhoe, a mixed raw-fish dish. The plate held a generous amount of flatfish sashimi, with vegetables including seaweed stems, cabbage, perilla leaves, and tomatoes to enjoy alongside it. It was a slightly different arrangement from an ordinary plate of sashimi, which made it fun to look at as well.

The fish itself was mild and pleasantly chewy, but eating it with konowada, salted sea cucumber entrails, gave it a completely different appeal. Konowada's salty, rich ocean flavor paired remarkably well with the clean taste of the flatfish. At first I wondered, “Will this combination work?” But after trying it, it was truly excellent with drinks. Personally, it was one of the combinations I remembered most from that day.

When mixed with the seasoning, it was tangy and nutty with an extra ocean flavor that kept me reaching back for more. Eating it with the varied vegetables instead of just the sashimi added more texture, and it was perfect with a drink.

## A generous spread that was easy to share with kids

Then, when all the main dishes arrived at once, the table became truly abundant. We could try warm boiled pork, parboiled squid, whelks, sundae (Korean blood sausage), and all kinds of accompaniments in one spread. What was nice about this arrangement was that adults could enjoy seafood and dishes such as konowada, while children could eat tender meat or parboiled squid. It made me think this was not simply a bar with lots for adults to eat, but a menu suitable enough for family visits too.

### Moist, tender warm boiled pork

I was especially pleased with the warm boiled pork. Tender boiled pork arrived warm and piled with plenty of minari (water dropwort), and the meat was moist rather than dry, so it was good for the kids too. Our children ate it far better than expected, and I was glad we had ordered it. It is good as drinking food, of course, but the meat itself is not strongly seasoned, so it is also nice to eat as a meal dish.

The aroma of the minari went beautifully with the pork. Its fresh fragrance added to the mild meat, so it did not feel heavy and stayed clean-tasting to the end. Adults can have it with sauce or accompaniments, while children can eat the meat separately, making it useful for a family meal out.

### Parboiled squid the kids loved

The parboiled squid was really good too. It was tender rather than tough, and the kids ate much more of it than I expected. When you take children to a pocha, there are often many spicy dishes and choosing food can be awkward, so I was glad Seo Jubang had mild dishes like this.

Along with the parboiled squid, we also had sundae and whelks, and the broad range of drinking-food choices was an advantage. The children could focus on squid and boiled pork, while the adults could share spicy accompaniments, whelks, and sashimi—a setup that could satisfy everyone.

### A varied selection of basic accompaniments too

![Salted pollock roe, potatoes, baek-kimchi, and tomato accompaniments](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang-14-i2pfx-966.webp)

Accompaniments such as salted pollock roe, potatoes, baek-kimchi (mild white kimchi), and tomatoes were served as well, and they were nice palate cleansers between the main dishes. The baek-kimchi in particular kept drawing me back because it refreshed the flavors when eaten with meat or seafood. Many places make the main dishes look impressive while the side dishes are ordinary, but this place felt satisfyingly well-rounded overall.

![A spacious table for dining with children](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang/sokcho-family-pocha-seojubang-15-u96tz-966.webp)

Even looking at us dining with the kids, it was clear that this felt more like a place where families could eat comparatively comfortably than a typical pocha. The tables were broad enough that even with many plates of food, things did not feel cluttered, making it nice for a group visit. So it would suit not only gatherings with friends, but also anyone looking for a Sokcho pocha street restaurant with group seating.

## Finishing with the Sokcho night sea

Overall, Seo Jubang felt closer to a cooking bar where you can properly enjoy a range of dishes than a pocha solely for drinking. The flatfish makhoe and konowada combination was a special treat, while the parboiled squid and warm boiled pork were easy for the children to enjoy, so visiting as a family did not feel burdensome. Adding a Yantai highball made the combination especially satisfying for me.

Another major advantage is its proximity to Yeongnang Beach and the pocha street, making it easy to walk straight toward the sea after your meal. Having delicious dishes with a drink, then feeling the cool sea breeze and seeing the night ocean at the end, made it an ideal Sokcho evening itinerary. According to its current listing, Seo Jubang operates from 18:00 until 3:00 AM and offers conveniences including group seating, private rooms, reservations, and parking information, so it seems suitable for a late-evening gathering or a larger group. If you want a drink near the sea in Sokcho, or are looking for a pocha you can visit with children, it is worth stopping by.
