## In short

Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch is a Korean charcoal bulgogi restaurant on Yulgok-ro 4-gil in Jongno, Seoul, just behind Jogyesa Temple. The lunch special charcoal bulgogi set for two costs 16,000 won per person, and the side dishes — gandoenjang (thick soybean paste stew) and myeoljorim (simmered anchovies) — were as good as the meat, enough to finish a bowl of rice before the bulgogi arrived, while the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) never came because the order was mixed up. With side dishes this strong, Eom Yongbaek is an easy pick for a Gwanghwamun lunch or team dinner.

I went to Jongno for some Korean food today and found a restaurant where not just the main charcoal bulgogi but even the side dishes were delicious. It's Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch. They serve charcoal bulgogi as a lunch menu, and the sides were so good that one bowl of rice wasn't enough. It's the kind of place I'd want to eat at again if I ever come back to Gwanghwamun, so I really recommend it. Let's get into the detailed review.

## Where is Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch, and what are its hours?

The address of this Jongno restaurant is 51 Yulgok-ro 4-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. You can get there via Line 5 Gwanghwamun Station Exit 2, Jonggak Station Exit 2, or Anguk Station Exit 6.

The walking distance differs slightly depending on which exit you take, but I took the bus. If you're taking the bus, get off at Jogyesa stop — it seems to be the closest stop. (It's behind Jogyesa Temple and also close to Shilla Stay.)

## Inside Eom Yongbaek: first-floor room and second-floor seating

Here's the exterior of Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch.

![Building entrance of Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch on a clear day](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-03-55hvx-900.webp)

Clean-looking exterior, and the restaurant looked quite spacious. The weather was nice that day too.

When I arrived the restaurant was packed, but by the time I finished eating it was almost break time so the crowd had thinned out. The tables were all round tables, and with so many offices nearby, I could tell a lot of office workers must come here.

I thought it was just the first floor, but it turns out there's a bigger space further inside. They were cleaning up after the lunch rush so I couldn't photograph the inner part of the first floor, so I went up to the second floor instead.

![Second floor seating area at Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-07-ps9k8-900.webp)

The second floor was pretty spacious too. Overall, the table spacing between seats felt generous, which I liked.

You can also see the menu at the entrance. I spotted mul makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) and pollock hoe bibim makguksu here that I hadn't noticed on the main menu board.

## What we ordered: the charcoal bulgogi lunch set for two

What I ordered was the main lunch special item — the charcoal bulgogi set for two at Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch.

Actually, haha, I thought the squid charcoal bulgogi came cooked together with the regular charcoal bulgogi, so I just ordered the standard charcoal bulgogi — but looking at another table, it turned out to be squid stir-fry PLUS charcoal bulgogi!!! I usually ask before ordering, but this time I just ordered the bulgogi straight away, haha. But it was so delicious that I want to go back again, so I'll try the squid version next time. (Leaving that regret for later.)

![Side dish spread served with the charcoal bulgogi set](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-13-1yr1s-900.webp)

## Side dishes as good as the main: gandoenjang, myeoljorim and siraegi doenjang soup

Once you order, they bring out a whole spread of side dishes — wow, these were genuinely delicious!!!!!! Delicious enough to finish a whole bowl of rice before the meat even arrives.

![Namul side dishes including young radish greens and stir-fried bean sprouts](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-14-zq2cz-900.webp)

![Seasoned perilla leaves, roasted gim, and ssam vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-15-q3jg0-900.webp)

First there was yeolmu (young radish greens), stir-fried bean sprouts, and one namul (seasoned vegetable) I can't quite remember — the one mixed with doenjang... hmm... haha. Then seasoned perilla leaves, roasted gim (dried seaweed) with dallae-jang (wild chive sauce), and ssam vegetables.

![Table spread of gandoenjang, myeolchi jorim, and siraegi doenjang soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-16-1sll9-900.webp)

And then!!!!!! Gandoenjang, myeolchi jorim, and siraegi doenjang guk (dried radish greens soybean paste soup).

![Close-up of gandoenjang in a stone bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-17-1jui8-900.webp)

![Myeolchi jorim served alongside rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-18-viz7u-900.webp)

The gandoenjang and myeolchi jorim are seriously next-level. Haha.

On top of that, there's sotbap (pot rice)!!!!!! For the pot rice, you first scoop the rice out into your own bowl, and then they add hot water so you can make sungnyung (scorched rice tea) from what's left in the pot. (I... didn't get to try it though, haha. I'll explain that later.)

![Pot rice being prepared into sungnyung](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-19-5eud1-900.webp)

## How does the charcoal bulgogi taste in a lettuce wrap with rice and myeoljorim?

And then the main charcoal bulgogi comes out too, filling the table completely. My friend and I were like, why is this table so huge? Haha — turns out it's because so many dishes come with the meal.

![Full table spread for two including the charcoal bulgogi](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-20-1242b-900.webp)

You each scoop portions onto your own small plate like this to eat.

![Charcoal bulgogi portioned onto a small plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-21-47w0d-1200.webp)

I tried it as the set.

![Charcoal bulgogi, rice, and myeolchi jorim wrapped in a leaf](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-22-1kiqi-900.webp)

You put meat, rice, and myeolchi jorim into a wrap, and honestly you don't need any other sauce. It's delicious with just rice alone, but adding meat gives it that extra chewy satisfaction!

![Wrapping the bulgogi into a leaf wrap](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-23-1gl7v-900.webp)

![Rice mixed with namul and gandoenjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan/eomyongbaek-gwanghwamun-charcoal-bulgogi-banchan-24-gm1sh-900.webp)

And you should mix the namul into the gandoenjang and eat it that way... it's seriously so delicious. Haha. Add meat on top of that and the nuttiness doubles!!!! I was really glad to have discovered Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch this time.

## What fell short at Eom Yongbaek, and when it's worth booking

As for the sungnyung... haha, there was a miscommunication with the staff. I had asked for hot water but they heard it as an extra order and took it away. So unfortunately I never got to taste the sungnyung. It was a bit disappointing, but I was already full from everything else and had such a satisfying, delicious meal that it was fine. (I'll be going back anyway, so I'll try it then.)

The dinner meat menu would probably pair really well with the myeolchi jorim too. If you're looking for a company dinner spot or want a hearty lunch, I really recommend this Gwanghwamun restaurant, Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch. Not just the main charcoal bulgogi but the side dishes overall were all delicious. Thanks for the meal.
