## In short

Maguro Tuna is a tuna restaurant in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon, Gangwon. The writer repeatedly chose the Jin course for its thick-cut tuna, explanations of each cut, continuing side dishes, and two refills. Verdict: a course worth lingering over with tuna and sake.

Today I’m introducing a place I return to again and again whenever I want tuna in Chuncheon. It’s Maguro Tuna (마구로참치) in Hupyeong-dong! This isn’t somewhere I’m writing about after trying it once—not even a second visit, but a third-third-third visit hahaha. Every time I go, I order the “Jin” course with almost no hesitation.

Tuna is naturally a pricier meal, so if the selection or service disappoints on one visit, it isn’t easy to go back. But the fact that I’ve visited here so many times kind of explains my review! It’s one of my personal favorite tuna places in Chuncheon, so this time I took lots of photos and will introduce it properly♥ (It’s also my blog’s first Chuncheon restaurant post, so this feels weird haha.)

## Maguro Tuna location and parking

Go up to the third floor of the building and walk all the way to the end to find Maguro Tuna.

One thing I love when I come here is the parking. You can use the building’s underground parking lot, and when I visited, I could use it without getting a separate parking ticket or coupon processed, which was convenient. The lot was also roomier than I expected, so coming by car felt less burdensome.

When you go out for tuna, the meal tends to take a while and you often have drinks too, so inconvenient parking is secretly stressful. This part was comfortable too, which is why I think it’s a good option for anyone looking for a course meal restaurant in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon :) For another parking option, you can use the open lot above M Smart in front of Hyundai 2-cha! ※ Parking operations may change, so please check with the restaurant when visiting.

## A clean interior with private rooms and counter seats

![Maguro Tuna menu and interior seating](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-09-gsbge-900.webp)

A clean interior that’s nice and comfortable for a meal. The restaurant itself is tidy too. Maguro Tuna has private rooms and counter-style seats, making it known as a good setup for dates, family meals, and quiet get-togethers. Open the dividers in the private rooms and they can become group seating too!!

## Small but lovely convenience items

![Convenience items prepared at the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-10-571p1-900.webp)

It’s thoughtful that they have all sorts of things ready. I love noticing little details like this hahaha. When I visited Maguro Tuna, they had phone chargers, phone stands, hair ties, aprons, iced or hot water, Wi-Fi, and more.

For people with long hair especially, it’s oddly uncomfortable to eat sashimi without a hair tie, so I loved that they had even thought of that. Ready to eat for real!

## The Jin course, chosen without hesitation

![Jin course basic table setting](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-11-1ryrr-900.webp)

Today too, the “Jin” course without hesitation. I get Jin almost every time I come here. The current public menu also lists courses such as Seon, Jin, Special Selection, and Chef’s Special Selection. I think about trying something else, but in the end… “Jin, please~” hahaha. And that day too, the serious tuna feast began!

### Starting with warm tuna porridge

![Tuna porridge served at the start of the course](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-12-fn3ul-900.webp)

Before the tuna arrives, tuna porridge comes out first. Rather than immediately stuffing in sashimi from the start, I like settling my stomach a little with warm porridge first. As you gently eat it, the main event starts getting ready.

## A platter of thick-cut tuna

Knock knock~ The tuna platter has finally arrived🐟

![A platter of thick-cut tuna](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-13-albr9-900.webp)

Here it is! The real kick here is the THICK-CUT TUNA!!!! Insanely delicious!!!

![Thick-cut tuna course selection](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-14-1r8fe-640.webp)

I’ve visited several times, and every time I’ve eaten comfortably. I also love that the owner explains each cut and how to eat it as the tuna comes out. Rather than just setting down a plate and leaving, they say, “This is this cut, and try eating it like this.” It makes you feel like you’re enjoying even the same tuna more properly!

- For fatty cuts: lots of wasabi + soy sauce
- For leaner cuts: sesame oil sauce
- (I don’t really know the names of the tuna cuts 😭)

Ahh…. This is why I keep coming back. Look at that thickness. It’s disappointing when tuna is sliced too thin, but I love that it comes out thick every time here.

The selection I had included swordfish belly, bigeye tuna belly, kama meat, head meat, bluefin tuna belly, rib meat, and crown meat, among other cuts. The selection may vary by the day’s supply and the course, so please keep that in mind :) If you love tuna and are looking for a great spot in Chuncheon, I absolutely recommend Maguro Tuna!!! There’s a reason it’s delicious! To be continued

For fatty cuts, pile on the wasabi! As I was told, I put a generous amount of wasabi on the fattier cuts and dipped them lightly in soy sauce, while I tried the comparatively less fatty cuts in sesame oil sauce. On cuts with plenty of fat of their own, even more wasabi than expected tasted refreshing rather than spicy. For real, tuna… lots of wasabi is the truth.

Some cuts I wrapped in gim (roasted seaweed), too. It’s one platter, but the ways to eat it keep changing, so there’s no chance to get tired of it hahaha.

## What makes kombujime-aged tuna different?

And something I really want to introduce at Maguro Tuna is kombujime (kelp-cured) aged tuna. According to the restaurant, they sprinkle it with thousand-year salt made from deep seawater in Goseong, Gangwon, then wrap it in wild kelp from Sokcho, Gangwon to age it. Simply put, it’s a method of aging tuna using kelp! They say it has a firmer texture and a savory umami quality that differs from fresh raw tuna. And the sushi that came out midway through was insane too…

![Tuna sushi served midway through the course](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-15-1nb3t-900.webp)

While we were eating tuna, sushi came out midway through too. They explained which belly cut it was… bluefin tuna maybe? Everyone!!! Eat tuna sushi the moment it comes out!!! Don’t waste even one second!!!!! With the rice and fatty tuna together, it feels completely different from eating it as sashimi.

## Kombujime fatty tuna sushi from the receipt event

I’ve come here so many times by now…

![Receipt event choice information](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-16-1csgo-900.webp)

Through the Naver receipt-review event, you could choose one Santory highball, a tokkuri flask of warm sake or chilled sake, or two pieces of Mediterranean bluefin tuna kombujime-aged fatty tuna sushi.

Before, I always chose a sake tokkuri because I thought, “The sushi will probably be similar to what came out earlier~,” you know? But this time I chose the fatty tuna sushi… best ever. Why hadn’t I eaten this all this time? The fat melted softly across my mouth, with kombujime’s distinctive umami added in… seriously freaking delicious. It went completely wild.

What I regretted most that day was why I had kept choosing only the tokkuri hahaha. Next time, I’m getting the sushi with zero hesitation. ※ Event offerings may change, so please check Naver Place or the restaurant’s information at the time of your visit.

### A day with sake and soju

For reference, this is how sake comes out when you order it.

![Sake in an ice basket](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-17-r9jdb-900.webp)
*A photo from a previous visit^^*

When I ordered sake on a previous visit, they served it in an ice-filled basket so we could drink it nice and cold. One piece of tuna, one sip of sake… ahh. Personally, I think Maguro Tuna is great for a meal, but also suits people looking for a Chuncheon sashimi bar where they can properly have a drink.

And when you order soju, they cool the glass and pour your drink with such good cheer hahaha.

![Soju ordered with tuna](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-18-18kcf-900.webp)

Filled right up, with that “shimai ippai” feeling~ I love this kind of atmosphere.

## Tuna refills are available twice

The thing everyone is most curious about: are there refills!!! With the course I had at Maguro Tuna, I could get tuna refilled twice. But honestly… once you finish the first platter and the sides start coming out one by one, you get way fuller than you expect hahaha. I was already starting to get full from the first platter.

Even so, I never felt like they were giving us side-eye, and there were times they offered more without me even asking first.

![Second tuna course refill](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-19-1nhh5-900.webp)

![Second tuna course refill](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-20-10ngr-900.webp)

This is the second platter… is this real? And then the final refill. I really wasn’t going to eat it, you know? I was so full. But after coming all this way, it felt sad to end without having it… so I said, “Just a tiny bit, one or two pieces each, please!” And this was the result… Isn’t this the reason for a third-third-third visit?

## Side dishes that keep coming, not just tuna

You don’t just eat tuna—the sides keep coming. I’ve lost count of how many times I said, “There’s more?” This isn’t a course that ends after just tuna. Dishes keep arriving in between.

![Grilled fish side dish from the course](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-21-ilvu2-900.webp)

The grilled fish I had was probably blackmouth croaker, and it was freaking delicious too. It was nicely grilled on the outside, and eating warm grilled fish after sashimi suddenly made me crave rice. The braised dish was really good too.

![Braised dish served in the course](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-22-nvn31-900.webp)

And I don’t know the exact name hahaha, but a tuna-braise-type dish comes out too.

Then grilled tuna head appears too.

![Seasoned grilled tuna head](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-23-rpowr-900.webp)

And grilled tuna head! My favorite among the grilled dishes~ It’s fun picking off the meat, and the seasoning had soaked in nicely, so moving from tuna sashimi to a warm dish made the flow feel just right. I think this is exactly why course meals are fun. It seemed braised in a soy sauce base, salty and tender, and absolutely perfect as a drinking snack.

A little tip from someone who has been to Maguro Tuna a few times… when about four people visit together, there have been times the owner gave us generous portions of dishes like this depending on the selection haha. Of course, the service and selection can vary from day to day!

A mixed fried platter with shrimp comes out too.

![Mixed fried platter including shrimp](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course/chuncheon-maguro-tuna-refill-course-24-1j6u9-900.webp)

A mixed fried platter including shrimp appears midway through as well. You might think, after eating fatty tuna, will fried food really go down? But… it does. Hahahaha. When something crunchy comes out, your hand reaches for it—that’s just human nature.

I also liked having the clear soup in between. After continuously eating cold sashimi, one sip of warm broth clears your palate and lets you start again hahaha. Since it isn’t just tuna and the whole course keeps connecting, that’s another reason I’d recommend it to people looking for a special-occasion course meal restaurant in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon.

## Choose buckwheat soba or al-bap for the final meal

And finally, for the last meal you could choose either buckwheat soba or al-bap (fish roe rice). By this point, you really feel like you might burst… but strangely, the final meal still goes down?

I tend to choose whatever I’m craving that day. If you want a cool, refreshing finish, soba is probably best; if you want a warm, substantial finish, al-bap seems like the better choice. After tuna, sides, sushi, fried food, and a meal, it really feels like you’ve had a proper feast. You have to eat it, eat it twice, eat it three times~ ×10000

## Final thoughts on Maguro Tuna after so many return visits

I think the fact that I’ve returned for a third-third-third visit says quite a lot about Maguro Tuna. What I personally love most is the thick-cut tuna + a selection that lets you try many cuts + the owner’s kind explanations + the side dishes.

Especially when you go for tuna for the first time, the names of the cuts are hard and you don’t know how to eat them for the best flavor. Here, the owner explains each one, so it becomes more fun to eat. And that Mediterranean bluefin tuna kombujime-aged fatty tuna sushi that I properly tried for the first time this visit… why had I only chosen tokkuri all this time? I’m seriously having it on my next visit too hahaha.

Parking was easy, the restaurant was clean, the men’s and women’s restrooms were separate, and they even had small convenience items like chargers and hair ties ready, so I was comfortable throughout the meal.

I’d recommend it to people looking for a Chuncheon tuna restaurant for a slightly special meal, like a date or family dinner, and to those seeking a Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon course meal where they can slowly enjoy many kinds of tuna. And for drink lovers… tuna with sake or soju, what more is there to say hahaha. Would I go again? I’ve already gone several times, and I’m planning to go again🙋🏻♀️
