Today I want to introduce a handmade burger place in Gangneung that I really enjoyed — Moana Burger. When you think of a Gangneung trip, raw fish or sundubu (soft tofu stew) usually come to mind first, but this time I was craving a properly made burger, so I went looking. The vibe was great, the owner was kind, and on top of that the burgers themselves were genuinely delicious. So let's get into today's record~

### A handy stop on the Gangmun Beach–Chodang-dong route

This Gangneung burger favorite, Moana Burger, sits near Gangmun Beach, Gyeongpo Lake, and the Chodang-dong area, making it an easy addition to a meal itinerary on a day of exploring the coast. By public transit, it's about a 2–3 minute walk from the Gangneung High School Main Gate stop, which is convenient, and since people in Gangneung often drive between tourist spots, having parking available made a car visit fairly easy too. It felt different from a shop in the busy downtown core — more relaxed, a good place to drop by casually. It's also a solid spot to head to when a burger craving hits while wandering around Gangmun Beach. After a string of Korean food or seafood meals in Gangneung, sometimes you want something different in the middle, and this was a great Gangneung handmade burger spot to slot into the route for that.

Moana Burger has a white-toned building with big MOANA BURGER lettering, so it was easy to spot from a distance. Black-and-white stripe accents added to the exotic burger-shop vibe, and stepping inside, a black-and-white checkered counter is the first thing that catches your eye — the overall feel was casual and hip. It wasn't overly styled; it felt more like a free-spirited place you could casually stop into for a burger while traveling.

### The Hawaiian flower hairpin service

There was also an unexpectedly cute service here — when you get your burger, they give you a Hawaiian flower hairpin as a little gift. It's a small thing, but it matched the name Moana and the shop's vibe so well, and receiving something like this while traveling made me quietly happy. It wasn't just a place to eat a burger and leave — it felt like they put thought into a small extra enjoyment, and that stuck with me.

The menu centers on handmade burgers. There's the flagship Moana Burger, the Double Moana Burger with double patty and double cheese, and a Hawaiian-style burger — three options to choose from depending on what you're in the mood for. The Moana Burger is the signature item with romaine, red onion, tomato, cheese, patty, and the Moana special sauce. The Double Moana Burger, true to its name, is a hearty build centered on double patty, double cheese, pickles, and red onion. The Hawaiian Burger is made with pineapple, bacon, romaine, cheese, and Moana teriyaki & ranch sauce — all spelled out clearly on the menu board, which was really helpful for ordering. And I liked that fries come included with every burger order.

The drink options were varied too — cola, Sprite, and Dr Pepper among them, with both regular and zero versions for a total of 5 sodas, plus draft beer and other beer options for anyone wanting a light drink alongside their burger. Handmade burger, fries, and soda or beer — it looked like a great combo to mix and match to your taste.

### 🍔 Moana Burger — the savoriness of the special sauce

First up was the signature Moana Burger, with romaine, red onion, tomato, cheese, patty, and the Moana special sauce. One bite in, and it was a burger where no single ingredient stood out too much — the overall balance was what worked. What stuck with me most was definitely the Moana special sauce. Special sauces are often heavy on sweet or salty notes, but this one wasn't as strong as expected. It was savory and clean at its core, so it didn't cover up the meaty flavor of the patty and blended in naturally.

The juicy patty, the savoriness of the cheese, the crisp bite of romaine, the moistness of the tomato, and the fresh tang of the red onion came through one after another, so despite being a handmade burger, it wasn't as heavy as expected. I especially liked how the patty and special sauce together made even the bun feel moist, and the generous vegetables kept cleansing the palate in between bites — which really worked for me. Even though the portion was quite big, I kept reaching for more and finished the whole burger quickly.

### 🧀 Double Moana Burger — juicy even without sauce

Meat lovers can't help but be drawn to the Double Moana Burger. With two patties and two slices of cheese, it had real thickness right from the first look. Trying it, it turned out to have a completely different charm from the Moana Burger. What surprised me most was that even without any separate sauce, it wasn't dry at all — the moment I bit in, the two patties released plenty of juice that filled my mouth, and with the melted cheese layered in between, I didn't feel like anything was missing without a sauce.

If anything, without sauce the patty's own meaty, savory flavor came through much more directly, and combined with the salty, rich flavor of the cheese, it filled my mouth with a heavy, satisfying taste. The juiciness from biting into the two thick patties at once was fantastic — 'juicy enough to overflow' is the phrase that fit this handmade burger best.

### 🍟 The fries

One thing that surprised me at Moana Burger was how good the fries were. Since they come included with the burger, I didn't expect much at first, but after a couple of bites I kept reaching for more. The outside was appropriately crisp while the inside still had that fluffy potato texture, and the seasoning was salty enough to not be bland. They were great on their own, and also a good side to pair with bites of the rich handmade burgers. Especially the combo of a bite of the juicy Double Moana Burger, a salty fry, and a sip of soda — that was excellent.

If you're craving something a bit different from the usual in Gangneung, Moana Burger is worth a visit. What I liked most was how distinct the two burgers' personalities were. The signature Moana Burger had great overall balance, with the freshness of romaine, tomato, and red onion coming together with the savory, clean special sauce. The Double Moana Burger, on the other hand, had no sauce at all, yet the juice from the two patties was so abundant that it stayed moist to the last bite, and with double cheese added, it was a hearty flavor meat lovers would be satisfied with.

On top of that, the fries that came alongside were delicious too, and with a wide variety of sodas and beers, it was a great place to properly enjoy a handmade burger meal. And the Hawaiian flower hairpin given to each guest was a small but memorable touch unique to Moana Burger. A good place to remember when you want to enjoy a juicy handmade burger with crisp fries in Gangneung.
