## In short

Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch is a tonkatsu (Japanese-style pork cutlet) restaurant in Toegye-dong, Chuncheon, Gangwon. At lunch the writer ordered the kimchi cheese nabe and the spicy tonkatsu, and the sharp, peppery broth, the melted cheese and a heat that hits in a tasty way went well together. Jeongseong Katsu is a good pick on a day when you want a warm, punchy tonkatsu meal.

I work hard on weekdays and try to get out of the daily routine at least a little on weekends. So I go to the sea often, or take a short trip somewhere nearby, but last week something came up on my schedule and I ended up spending my time in Chuncheon.

## Jeongseong Katsu, found in Toegye-dong, Chuncheon

I hurried through what I had to do and squeezed in a lunchtime visit to a newly opened tonkatsu (Japanese-style breaded pork cutlet) place.

Jeongseong Katsu originally ran as a delivery-only operation, and has now opened proper dine-in locations, including the Chuncheon Hyoja branch. I'd been to the Hyoja branch a few months back, and the menu was more varied and the food better than I expected, so this was a return visit.

For parking, they say you can park in the alley or use the underground lot.

The interior was done in white and wood tones, clean but with an upscale feel. It was spacious and comfortable, an easy place to sit down and eat, and even though we came in after 2 p.m., it looked like plenty of customers had already been through. Overall it felt neat and tidy.

## A wide menu, from katsu to rice bowls and noodles

Jeongseong Katsu says it insists on the freshest 100% Korean-raised pork and cooks each order on the spot to make crispy, traditional katsu. Besides the crispy cutlets — the signature assorted katsu, pork jowl katsu, loin katsu and so on — there's a good range including sweet potato cheese katsu.

As you'd expect from a tonkatsu specialist, the katsu menu is the main event, but there are rice bowls and noodle dishes too, so there's a lot to choose from. The sides include a variety of pasta and udon, and some come in under ₩10,000, which makes them easy to add on. Check out the receipt review event as well -

## So how were the kimchi cheese nabe and the spicy tonkatsu?

Instead of the signature crispy katsu, we ordered the kimchi cheese nabe (hot pot) and the spicy tonkatsu. The traditional katsu is surely delicious too, but every now and then you need something punchy like this to make you crave the basic katsu again. Not knowing how spicy it would be, I asked for the sauce on the side!

I'm someone who likes spicy food, and when I dipped a little to try it, it was the kind of heat that hits you in a really tasty way. At first the spiciness comes through strongly, but if you don't eat the chili peppers themselves, it seems to fade pretty quickly.

If you like spicy food, this is worth a try at least once. Rather than heat that's just harsh for its own sake, it's the right level to eat alongside the tonkatsu, so I was satisfied. As spicy as buldak (fire chicken), and yet not quite..

The kimchi cheese nabe came piled with snowflake cheese, so it looked great from the start, and since the tonkatsu was sitting in the broth, the cheese melted in no time.

Even submerged in the broth, you could tell the cutlet was thick. Eating the tonkatsu with the sharp, peppery kimchi broth kept it from feeling greasy, and the cheese added a soft, mellow note on top. It's a different experience from kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) — a meal where you could taste the kimchi nabe's own charm.

![A warm kimchi cheese nabe meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/chuncheon-kimchi-cheese-nabe-katsu/chuncheon-kimchi-cheese-nabe-katsu-14-hkw37-966.webp)

It goes well with rice, and it's just the thing when you're craving a warm, soupy dish. The prices aren't a burden, the portions are generous, and the menu is varied, so it's a place you could visit several times.

If you're looking for a good-value tonkatsu place, from crispy katsu to kimchi cheese nabe and spicy tonkatsu, I recommend Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch. Tonkatsu, the so-called soul food of Korean men — on a weekend when going far is hard but staying home feels like a waste, here's a tasty lunch close to home. Thank you for the great meal, Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch ◡̈
