[Jeju] A great black pork spot in Aewol — Nopo Dwaeji Aewol. Today I visited this black pork place near Gwakji Beach, and I was so, so happy that they open early! Let's get straight into the review.

## Where is Nopo Dwaeji Aewol? Near Gwakji Beach and the Aewol café street

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is located near Gwakji Beach. There are a lot of pensions nearby too, so it seemed like a great spot to visit if you're already staying in the area, and the parking lot is huge, so it also works well if you're driving a rental car!

Best of all, the Aewol café street is nearby, so it also seemed like a good place to stop for lunch before heading to the cafés.

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol has two entrances. Since I came by car, I just parked in the lot and went up!

The parking lot at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is spacious, which was amazing for me as a new driver! Plenty of spots too — very satisfying.

Here's the menu board. Perfect if you come in the evening for the black pork geungogi (thick-cut pork). You could also add mokdal or samgyeopsal, and they also sell Jeju gap deung gi sal and hangjeongsal.

Since I ran the 11am opening run, the lunch set menu was available! So I ordered the lunch set for two (400g grilled pork + choice of jjigae + two servings of kelp rice) plus gap deung gi sal.

## Inside Nopo Dwaeji Aewol and the self-serve bar

I timed it right at opening, so there was plenty of seating! The restaurant is spacious, so it also seemed like a good place for families to visit.

There's a self-serve corner, so you can help yourself to more of whatever you're running low on without feeling awkward about it. The self-serve bar is run cleanly too!

## How was the lunch set for two with added galmaegisal?

Today's order was the lunch set for two (400g grilled pork + choice of jjigae + two servings of kelp rice) and the gap deung gi sal.

The basic side dishes were also arranged neatly, a good match to eat with the meat. Especially delicious were the myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and the seasoned lettuce salad! Dipping the black pork in myeoljeot added a salty savoriness — ugh, so good. The distinctive flavor of myeoljeot paired so well with the meat that I ended up dipping everything in it alone.

### Kelp rice bowls

Instead of regular steamed rice, you get kelp rice! It had a subtle salty taste with a hint of sweetness. The rice itself had a mild savory depth, so it was fine to eat on its own, and it went especially well with the doenjang jjigae broth or with the meat.

The crab doenjang soup. Maybe because of the crab, the broth was cleaner and more savory than a regular doenjang jjigae. The nutty depth of the doenjang combined with the seafood flavor from the crab made it perfect to spoon up between bites of meat, and the big chunks of tofu paired well with the rice too.

### Pre-seared samgyeopsal finished over charcoal

Since it was the lunch set, I had to choose between samgyeopsal and mokdal — I went with samgyeopsal!

The black pork comes pre-seared and then gets grilled again on charcoal? Thanks to that, I got to enjoy samgyeopsal that was crispy outside and juicy inside. Each piece of samgyeopsal was thick, giving it a chewy texture when I bit into it, and the charcoal aroma paired beautifully with the nutty flavor unique to black pork.

### The galmaegisal we added

The extra gap deung gi sal I ordered! Unlike the pre-seared samgyeopsal, this came raw for you to grill yourself.

It had relatively little fat and a strong flavor, with a chewy texture that really stood out. Rather than being soft and juicy like samgyeopsal, the meat flavor got richer the more you chewed, so ordering it alongside samgyeopsal was great for noticing the difference in texture.

## Verdict: is Nopo Dwaeji Aewol worth the 11am opening run?

If you want to properly eat black pork in Aewol, Jeju, I'd recommend visiting Nopo Dwaeji Aewol! Since the meat comes pre-seared and just gets a quick charcoal finish, the waiting time while grilling was minimal, which I loved. If you're looking for a black pork spot around Aewol or Gwakji Beach, I'd recommend pairing it into your travel itinerary.
