## In short

Seoul Myeonok is a long-running naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant three minutes on foot from Exit 1 of Pyeongtaek Station on Line 1. A couple house-hunting in Godeok New Town stopped in for pyongyang naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon and a half order of suyuk (boiled sliced pork), and found the Seoul Myeonok broth distinctly rich in meat flavor rather than the extremely plain style they had tried in Jangchung-dong. The verdict: an easy first pyongyang naengmyeon for anyone new to the dish.

## Why we stopped at Seoul Myeonok during a Godeok house-hunting trip

Seoul Myeonok is an old-school naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant right in front of Exit 1 of Pyeongtaek Station on Line 1. I've got about four months left living in Asan. Lately I've been house-hunting around Godeok New Town, and thankfully we found a place we liked and just finished signing the official contract — my mind feels a lot lighter now haha.

These days I look around Pyeongtaek Station and the old downtown near Songtan whenever I have time, and I think we made the right call settling here. Actually, about eight years ago I worked for a company in Osan-myeon, Pyeongtaek for around two and a half years. Back then Godeok and Jije were all anyone talked about, full of development buzz. Nothing much was actually visible at the time, but now that so much time has passed, seeing it actually develop with my own eyes feels pretty moving.

After walking around Godeok Phase 1 and Phase 2 so many times house-hunting I was sick of it, my wife and I went to Pyeongtaek Station for a bit of nostalgia too. Right in front of Exit 1 there's an old-school naengmyeon restaurant that's apparently quite famous, so we stopped by before summer ended.

The interior shows its age a bit, but overall it's kept in clean condition, with tables ranging from two-tops to four-tops. I walked in about ten minutes after opening, and the place was already packed with customers.

## Seoul Myeonok menu and what we ordered

The menu board. True to a naengmyeon specialty spot, pyongyang naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon are the main dishes, with bossam and pajeon (scallion pancake) as sides. We ordered pyongyang naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon, and a half order of suyuk (boiled pork).

### Half order of suyuk and myeongtae-hoe muchim (spicy pollack salad)

First, the half order of suyuk arrived.

It looked like it had been boiled for quite a while, but once you actually eat it, it's not dry at all — tender and properly cooked.

![Close-up of tender, well-boiled suyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-09-pu6bv-966.webp)

Myeongtaehoe-muchim (seasoned raw pollock salad) and mumallaengi (dried radish pickle). The quality here is no joke.

![Suyuk topped with seasoned radish and myeongtaehoe-muchim](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-11-tvlgw-966.webp)

Piling the mu-saengchae (seasoned radish) and myeongtaehoe-muchim on top of the suyuk, you can enjoy it just as much as at a dedicated bossam restaurant. The portion was just right for two, and priced fairly, so I'd recommend adding a half order of suyuk.

![Pyongyang naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon set together on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-13-yst5l-966.webp)

## What does the pyongyang naengmyeon broth at Seoul Myeonok taste like?

The main dishes, pyongyang naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon, arrived. First, the pyongyang naengmyeon.

![Pyongyang naengmyeon topped with pear, meat garnish, and egg strips](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-14-12ovn-966.webp)

Pear and meat garnish plus egg jidan (egg strips) sit on top of the noodles. When the garnish is properly done, my expectations shoot up before I even taste it — and just from the look of it, this seemed like a properly made naengmyeon.

![Noodles lifted from a bowl of Seoul Myeonok's pyongyang naengmyeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-15-yw5zi-966.webp)

They cut the noodles into easy-to-eat lengths. I hear that people who really appreciate naengmyeon often eat the noodles uncut. Apparently places that make their own noodles in-house, unlike mass-produced ones, aren't chewy and have a nice bite you snap off with your teeth. It's clearly quite different from the naengmyeon you get at a barbecue joint or delivered. It has the springiness of well-made noodles and goes down smoothly and softly when chewed.

After enjoying the natural flavor for a bit, I stirred in a ring of wasabi for extra umami.

![Bowl of pyongyang naengmyeon with wasabi stirred in](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-17-18id2-966.webp)

![Pyongyang naengmyeon served with myeongtaehoe and pickled radish](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-18-18de5-966.webp)

Adding the myeongtaehoe and mu-jeolim (pickled radish) on the side makes it nice and refreshing.

### How Seoul Myeonok compares with Jangchung-dong pyongyang naengmyeon

Honestly, this was only my second time eating pyongyang naengmyeon. The first time was at a Michelin Guide-listed naengmyeon place in Jangchung-dong, and from what I remember, it wasn't a great experience. The broth was extremely bland, almost like meat had been dipped in and pulled straight back out, and I didn't find it particularly delicious. Apparently pyongyang naengmyeon is a dish that splits opinion even among serious food lovers.

But here at Seoul Myeonok, the meat broth had a noticeably rich flavor. It wasn't the artificial bright tang you get with mul-naengmyeon at a barbecue restaurant, but more like a broth simmered down long and deep with a touch of umami added. I've heard that Woo Rae Ok in Jongno, Seoul is a good starting point for people new to pyongyang naengmyeon, and I feel Seoul Myeonok has a similar character. Even for someone like me who isn't used to pyongyang naengmyeon, it was an easy, approachable flavor. It was delicious.

![Seoul Myeonok's bibim naengmyeon topped with garnish](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-19-1cpox-966.webp)

## Alternating bites of bibim naengmyeon and cold broth

Next up, the bibim naengmyeon. It was mixed nicely, and just like the pyongyang naengmyeon, it came topped with pear and meat garnish. A completely different flavor character from the pyongyang naengmyeon.

![Close-up of well-mixed bibim naengmyeon noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon/pyeongtaek-station-seoulmyeonok-pyeongyang-naengmyeon-20-q87e0-966.webp)

At a glance it doesn't look like it would be very spicy or intense, but maybe because we started with the mild pyongyang naengmyeon, it tasted quite bold in comparison. It's hard to put into words, but the pyongyang naengmyeon is mild while the bibim naengmyeon is bold and packed with umami, and the two together create an odd sort of balance — once you start alternating between them, you can't stop eating.

Both naengmyeon were excellent. The quality and flavor hold up against even the best-known naengmyeon restaurants in Seoul, so once we move to Pyeongtaek next year, I think we'll be coming back often. A great meal.
