## In short

Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a duruchigi (stir-fried pork and vegetables) restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Arriving at 11:50am on a weekday put the writer first in line, with a 10-minute wait before a table, and the order was squid-and-pork duruchigi, an egg roll, and freshly cooked sotbap (hot-pot rice). The pork pulled apart along the grain, the thick-cut squid stayed springy, and the moist egg roll plus nurungji (scorched rice) made Oneuldo Utja Chowol a genuinely filling lunch.

The cicadas that sang all summer have given way to crickets, and this morning the sky was full of clouds too. With it getting pretty chilly in the mornings and evenings, I found myself craving hot kimchi jjigae and duruchigi, so I headed to Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a duruchigi restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi.

It's a name you'd never forget once you hear it — 'Oneuldo Utja,' meaning 'Let's laugh today too.' It's a duruchigi restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi where a good meal naturally puts a smile on your face. I left thoroughly satisfied after the pork-and-squid duruchigi, the soft egg rolls, and freshly cooked sotbap.

## How long is the wait, and where do you park?

Oneuldo Utja Chowol has plenty of parking space in front of the restaurant. About 20 cars can park, and there's also an open lot out front you can use.

Even on a weekday, this place had a wait — it's a popular spot. You write your name and party size on the waiting notebook and get seated in order. I arrived around 11:50am and was first in line. After about a 10-minute wait, I was seated.

## Inside Oneuldo Utja Chowol and the self-serve side dish bar

![Clean, bright interior of Oneuldo Utja Chowol](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-08-v9ojb-900.webp)

The inside of Oneuldo Utja Chowol was clean and bright. Every table was full, which really told me this place is popular.

The side dishes are simple: cucumber, onion, dried radish, pickled garlic, and ssamjang (a dipping sauce). You can help yourself to more from the self-serve bar as needed.

## Ordering the squid-and-pork duruchigi

![Squid-and-pork duruchigi piled high with vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-10-h7luz-900.webp)

![Squid-and-pork duruchigi pot before cooking](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-11-1bi5r-900.webp)

I love squid, but I can't give up pork either — I refuse to miss out on either one. So I ordered the squid-and-pork duruchigi at Oneuldo Utja Chowol. The vegetables were piled up like a mountain, and the whole thing smelled healthy and fresh.

![Duruchigi with a whole piece of kimchi on top](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-12-41sss-900.webp)

![Cutting the kimchi with scissors](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-13-56czg-900.webp)

A whole piece of kimchi (fermented cabbage) came on top, so I cut it up a bit. The crisp crunching sound alone let me imagine the flavor.

![Duruchigi cooking with the vegetables wilting down](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-14-sahh2-900.webp)

![Finished squid-and-pork duruchigi after stirring](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-15-ssr60-900.webp)

The staff explained that the pork and squid come out nearly fully cooked, so you just need to wait for the vegetables to wilt before eating. It's ready to eat almost right away, which makes it perfect for office workers with short lunch breaks. They also warned that the sauce splatters a lot while stirring, so an apron is a must. The friendly explanation of how to eat and the apron they handed me put me in a good mood before the meal even started.

Checking the origin label, the squid was deep-sea caught. Even as it was cut with scissors, the squid looked thick and springy, and it really did have a plump, chewy texture when I ate it.

![Thickly sliced deep-sea squid](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-16-1o5zi-900.webp)

![Thick-cut tender pork slices](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-17-ith7h-900.webp)

### How tender is the pork, and how spicy is the duruchigi?

The squid's thickness is really great. It has a satisfying chew and a real sense of freshness. It's not tough at all, and with the sauce lightly soaked in, I kept reaching for more.

The thickly sliced pork melted the moment it hit my mouth. The way it fell apart tenderly along the grain was so impressive that I found myself wanting to come back just for pork duruchigi next time. The soft, savory pork really stood out.

To me, the spice level was about like Shin Ramyun. My spice-sensitive partner said it was a bit spicy for them.

## Don't skip the soft egg roll

![A plate of Oneuldo Utja Chowol's egg rolls](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-19-qnboq-900.webp)

![Egg roll cross-section showing its moist texture](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-20-stbac-900.webp)

Egg rolls are a must with duruchigi! You especially have to try Oneuldo Utja's egg rolls. I'm still thinking about that soft, moist texture. You just can't get that texture making it at home — I wanted to ask them their secret. I want to eat that moist egg roll again. I think it's the perfect side to the slightly spicy duruchigi.

## Freshly cooked sotbap and nurungji (scorched rice)

![Freshly served sotbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-21-8slb2-900.webp)

Off to one side of Oneuldo Utja Chowol, sotbap (hot-pot rice) is being cooked continuously, and the sound and smell of rice cooking stirs up your appetite. Can you tell how sticky and glossy the rice looks? The chewiness and nuttiness of freshly cooked rice was really wonderful.

![Glossy sotbap rice transferred to a bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-22-1fpxs-900.webp)

![Nurungji from sotbap with hot water poured over it](https://img.superchart.com/images/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja/choweol-duruchigi-lunch-wait-onul-do-utja-23-1edga-900.webp)

Pouring hot water over the crust to make nurungji (scorched rice) is another pleasure you can't skip with sotbap. Even when I'm way too full, I can't resist one more spoonful of nurungji. Once again, I came back with a full belly.

## Is Oneuldo Utja Chowol worth the trip?

If you're looking for a good duruchigi restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, I'd recommend Oneuldo Utja Chowol. The pork in the duruchigi was tender rather than tough, and the squid had a nice springy chew. I was especially fond of the soft, moist egg rolls, and with the freshly cooked sotbap and nurungji on top, it felt like a truly filling, complete meal.

Since there was a wait even for weekday lunch, if you're planning to visit, it might be worth avoiding peak mealtimes — or just going in expecting to wait a bit.
