## In short

Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a Japanese gyukatsu (beef cutlet) restaurant a 4-minute walk from Exit 3 of Gwanggyo Central Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a weekday lunch visit that filled every table, the sirloin gyukatsu and a hambagu (Japanese hamburger steak) omurice arrived to be grilled with butter on a personal tabletop brazier, and staff swapped out the scorched grill plate partway through. ## Weekday lunch crowd and bar seats at Gyuen-dang

Gyuen-dang had a Japanese vibe in every corner. Wood interior, small tabletop grills, and Japanese-style backdrops made for a cozy space to eat in. We visited on a weekday for lunch, and the group tables were already all full — by the time we left, it was nearly at full capacity!

There's a bar (dachi) seating area on one side of the restaurant, making it an easy spot for solo dining near Gwanggyo Central Station. If you're coming on foot or by public transit, head to the 1st floor of Avenue France's Attijone building in Gwanggyo and you shouldn't have trouble finding it!

## What's on the menu at Gyuen-dang

The signature dishes are sirloin gyukatsu, tenderloin gyukatsu, hambagu omurice, and brie cheese omurice. Gyuen-dang is known as a gyukatsu specialist, but it turns out they have a good range of other Japanese dishes too. For the gyukatsu, you can also add extra meat!

Beyond that, they also offer steak-don (rice bowl), tsukune-don, potato curry, atsuatsu udon, deep-fried squid legs, and deep-fried chicken skin.

## Sirloin gyukatsu: what comes with it and how to grill it

Gyuen-dang's signature sirloin gyukatsu. It arrived neatly plated with steamed rice, doenjang soup, salad, muchae (radish salad), wasabi, salt, gyukatsu sauce, and the cutlet itself. This was my first time grilling gyukatsu myself, and the portion of lean meat was quite generous!

![Plate of sirloin gyukatsu with a vivid pink cross-section](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch-09-1g2i7-900.webp)

![Gyukatsu served with wasabi and salt on the side](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch-10-1conk-900.webp)

• How to eat the gyukatsu

- Grill each side of the meat for 15–20 seconds
- Grill with a quarter pat of butter for extra richness
- Try eating the gyukatsu lightly seared only on the surface

Grilling the meat can scorch the grill plate, but a staff member swapped it out midway through, so we could keep eating comfortably without worrying about it.

At Gyuen-dang, a top gyukatsu restaurant in Gwanggyo, Suwon, the meat comes seared only on the edges, still vivid pink inside, ready to grill on your own tabletop burner to taste! Even grilled well-done it stayed plenty tender, and grilling it with butter doubled the savory flavor.

## What is hambagu omurice?

The hambagu omurice had a hearty look to it. I was torn between a rice bowl and the omurice, but I ordered the omurice since it seemed to have more reviews! The hambagu omurice I ordered is Gyuen-dang's distinctive, unique dish — fried rice topped with a hambagu (hamburger steak) and egg.

![Gyuen-dang omurice topped with hambagu](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch-16-ygber-900.webp)

![Hambagu omurice with sauce poured over it](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch-17-uq9xt-900.webp)

• How to eat the omurice

- Slice the egg so it slowly unfolds open
- Pour the sauce over the opened egg
- Eat the egg, hambagu, sauce and rice all together

![Cross-section of the omurice egg cut with a knife](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch/gyuendang-gwanggyo-chaekkeut-gyukatsu-lunch-18-hzrv3-900.webp)

The fluffy-cooked omurice was characterized by how softly it opened up when cut with a knife! It had been a while since I'd had omurice, but the egg and hambagu quality were good enough that it felt like an easy, unfussy lunch. It's also a dish kids would probably love.
