## In short

Mannyeon Dakgangjeong is a takeout dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites) shop on Taejo-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village, South Korea. A half mild-sauce, half fried large box (₩30,000) was opened straight in the car, and unlike dakgangjeong tried in Sokcho and Mokpo, the chicken pieces were large with moist thigh meat, staying crisp even after cooling for an hour and a half. Ranked the best dakgangjeong eaten on any trip so far.

When I was in Jeonju not long ago, I couldn't leave without one last stop — Mannyeon Dakgangjeong, a famous dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites) spot in Jeonju Hanok Village!

That thing everyone buys one of when they visit the Hanok Village ,, I wasn't super hungry but felt like something was missing, so I decided to grab a box of Mannyeon Dakgangjeong to take home.

And it turns out this claimed the top spot among all the travel-destination dakgangjeong I've ever tried.

It's located right in front of Gyodong Yukjeon, and easy to spot if you walk from Jeondong Cathedral toward Omokdae.

## Menu and prices — dakgangjeong, shrimp gangjeong, and sides

The menu is broadly split into dakgangjeong and shrimp gangjeong. Dakgangjeong comes in mild, spicy, soy sauce, and fried, at ₩28,000 large / ₩18,000 regular, and a half-and-half large is ₩30,000.

You can also mix shrimp gangjeong and dakgangjeong half-and-half — both are so good on their own that the shrimp+chicken combo seemed to be the most popular order.

Besides the mains, there was a range of side menus too — sotteok-sotteok, sweet potato cheese sticks, fried jjondeugi, and cheese balls. These felt like the kind of trendy Korean snacks that would be fun to introduce to a foreign visitor.

This is the English menu! Since so many foreign visitors come through the Hanok Village, they even had a separate English menu :)

## Expectations from someone let down by Sokcho and Mokpo dakgangjeong

The classic dakgangjeong shop line ,,, "It tastes even better once it cools down" — turns out that was actually true. More on that later.

Honestly, whenever I travel I tend to try the locally famous dakgangjeong wherever I go. I've had it in Sokcho and in Mokpo too ,, but was often let down — too sweet, too hard, or dry meat.

But this was the first place that actually made me go "wow, this is genuinely good" ..!

### Fried to order, under 10 minutes wait

Once you order, they start frying right then. Made and sold the same day, they said, and it really is a system where cooking starts the moment you order. So the food didn't come out instantly, but under 10 minutes was totally worth the wait.

![Chicken being fried after the order is placed](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-09-sqcv5-900.webp)

I picked half mild, half fried for my dakgangjeong, and here they were tossing the fried chicken in sauce!

The sign said they use a fresh fruit sauce, made with apple and pineapple, they said. Maybe that's why it wasn't overly sweet — more like the sweetness didn't hit the tongue directly, but followed along quietly like an umami note :)

Packed up ~!

![Packed takeout bag of Mannyeon Dakgangjeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-12-n2fdg-900.webp)

It was mild + fried half-and-half large, but a packet of spicy "Mannyeon Hot Dip Sauce" came included too.

## Opened straight in the car: mild + fried half-and-half

Whoa, this looked so good — knowing how it tastes made it look even better ,,, mild on the bottom, fried on top, freshly fried dakgangjeong — how could I resist? I opened the box right there in the car and started eating.

![Box opened and being eaten straight in the car](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-15-1iiof-900.webp)

Literally the first bite and I thought, wow, this is different. Different from all the other dakgangjeong shops that had let me down before.

For one, the chicken pieces weren't broken into tiny bits before frying — they stayed big and chunky, with moist thigh meat still tender inside.

With those bad dakgangjeong that have dry meat, thick batter on the outside, and sauce that's just sweet and salty, you sometimes can't tell if you're eating chicken or a cracker ,, but here it was the exact opposite. Crisp outside, fluffy inside, with zero gamey chicken smell — it genuinely tasted like real chicken.

![A piece of dakgangjeong picked up with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-16-1ouos-900.webp)

![Fried dakgangjeong piece with thin crispy batter](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-17-mw171-900.webp)

### Piece size and the fried batter

Since I had a camera in one hand and chopsticks in the other, I grabbed a smaller piece for the photo since the chicken pieces were heavy ,, most pieces were about three times the size of the one in that photo.

The fried version also had a thin, crisp batter — nothing felt overly floury or heavy, it went really well with the meat, and the fatty part of the chicken skin came through nicely too. Really tasty.

Still, dakgangjeong is dakgangjeong, so my chopsticks kept reaching for the mild side :) That's how good the sauce was at Mannyeon Dakgangjeong, the dakgangjeong spot in Jeonju Hanok Village!

![Close-up of dakgangjeong coated in mild sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite/jeonju-hanok-village-dakgangjeong-drumstick-bite-18-mrvou-900.webp)

## An hour and a half later: the claim that it's better cold

The mild sauce was sweet but not in a shallow, right-on-the-tongue way — the sweetness followed after like an umami note, so my chopsticks kept going back for more.

And it was truly soft, packed with tender, juicy thigh meat inside — with a texture like this, I thought kids and even adults who don't like anything too hard would really enjoy eating it comfortably.

What genuinely surprised me was eating it again about an hour and a half later ..! Even completely cooled, it wasn't soggy at all — if anything, the crispy coating came through even more. It hadn't gone hard, it had just cooled while staying crisp, so that line about tasting better once cooled turned out to be true.

I think I get why everyone buys a box when they come to Jeonju Hanok Village — and next time I visit Jeonju, this is somewhere I'd genuinely love to buy from again.
