## In short

Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang is a hanwoo (Korean beef) oxtail soup restaurant on Pyeonghwa-ro 43beon-gil near Peace Square in Mokpo, run by the same family for three generations since 1976. The hanwoo oxtail soup costs 27,000 won, and the best way to eat it is to pick up the bone by hand and pile radish kimchi on top of the tender, clean-tasting meat until the rich broth brings on a sweat. On a cold, windy day in Mokpo, Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang is the bowl to go for.

## Why Mokpo Peace Square calls for oxtail soup on a cold day

The wind kept getting colder and the weather kept getting chillier, and on a day when I had no energy and felt off, I wasn't in the mood for something light like a sandwich or gimbap (seaweed rice roll) — I wanted a proper, long-simmered real health food. That's how I found this place, not just any oxtail soup but one simmered with Korean beef: Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang, a Mokpo Peace Square spot!

### How to find Mujinjang Kkori Gomtang: a short walk from Coffee Changgo-ro

The sign read 'a traditional house running for three generations since 1976,' catching my eye right away at this Mokpo Peace Square favorite, Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang! I heard they recently moved locations, but the new spot near Peace Square is within walking distance of Coffee Changgo-ro, which I love for its egg tarts — even better as far as I'm concerned :) If you're visiting Mokpo, hitting Coffee Changgo-ro and then Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang sounds like a perfect combo.

### Inside Mujinjang: a big room that works for groups and work dinners

The interior was spacious and clean. Drinks are cheap here too, and with so many tables, it seemed like a great spot for group dinners or work gatherings!

## Menu and prices, and why Mujinjang uses only hanwoo oxtail

What sets this Mokpo Peace Square favorite apart from other oxtail soup places is that they use only hanwoo (Korean beef) oxtail! That's why the owner takes in the whole cut and does all the butchering and prep by hand. The premium oxtail soup (tail + knee bone) is ₩30,000, hanwoo oxtail soup is ₩27,000, hanwoo knee bone soup is ₩25,000, hanwoo hip bone soup is ₩16,000 (limited to 10 bowls a day), and hanwoo boiled beef soup is ₩13,000! They also had menu items rarely seen at oxtail soup restaurants, like hip bone soup and steamed hip bone. After some deliberation, I ordered the most basic option to get a real feel for the place: hanwoo oxtail soup!

## Hanwoo oxtail soup at 27,000 won: what arrives at the table

My hanwoo oxtail soup arrived with the side dishes :)

The milky broth was packed with hanwoo oxtail pieces, plus thin wheat noodles.

After a few stirs with the spoon, big chunks of hanwoo oxtail floated right up..!

You could tell from first glance — beads of fat glistening, good quality and care evident in every piece! The hanwoo oxtail looked so clean and the texture looked so good that there was nothing left to question about quality just from appearance alone.

### Side dishes: Jeolla-style kimchi, seasoned chives and radish kimchi

You can't skip these side dishes when talking about Mokpo — the deeply seasoned, well-fermented napa cabbage kimchi was true Jeolla-do style and delicious, and there was also a chive salad that goes great mixed into the oxtail soup. Of all of them, the one that suited my taste best was the radish kimchi above! Its clear sweet-and-tangy flavor really brought out the flavor of the gomtang (bone broth soup) even more.

### Tender oxtail with no gamey smell, rich enough to break a sweat

Picking the meat off the bone, the tenderness was on another level. Being hanwoo, there was absolutely no gamey smell either, so every spoonful felt like it was building me back up :) The weather was cool and the wind was cold, but slurping down the properly nourishing oxtail soup and its thick broth without pause made me break out in a sweat automatically..! I had no energy going in, but strength came back on its own.

## The owner on hip bone soup (eongchi-tang) and steamed hip bone

The dipping sauce that came with it was perfectly balanced — not too salty, not too sweet, not too sour! As I ate, I got curious about the hip bone soup menu item and asked the owner, who kindly explained pretty much everything about oxtail soup. Most oxtail soup restaurants don't use hanwoo (Korean beef) mainly because of cost, but also because hanwoo tail can't be supplied as a cut on its own. So they have to take in the whole piece attached to the pelvis and do all the butchering and prep themselves — and in the process of the owner handling that himself, he's able to offer dishes you rarely see elsewhere besides oxtail soup..! That's exactly what the hip bone soup and steamed hip bone are. The hip bone soup comes out shaped like a rib and is sold limited to 10 bowls a day, and the steamed hip bone is sold separately for ₩40,000 — apparently true food lovers come specifically for it,,

## The best bite: hold the bone and pile on radish kimchi

The combination I enjoyed the most was topping the oxtail soup with radish kimchi. Not picking the meat off first — pick up the bone as is and pile on the radish kimchi! After putting the whole thing in my mouth and gnawing the meat off, while the tangy taste of the kimchi was still lingering, taking a sip of the hot broth cleaned my palate completely — it couldn't have tasted better..!

## Is Mujinjang Kkori Gomtang worth it as comfort food in Mokpo?

Rich, milky broth, clean hanwoo oxtail you can tell was prepared with care, and tasty side dishes — with ingredients this good, it couldn't possibly taste bad no matter how you ate it. It was clean yet deep, with a clear sense of nourishment, the kind of taste that adults would love and that would also work well as a dish for kids. I still think, to this day, that eating this on that particular day was the right call..!

When you want to fend off the cold wind before winter really sets in, when you want warm, filling health food that also tastes great, or when you're looking for an oxtail soup restaurant worth seeking out in Mokpo — I'd recommend Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang, a Mokpo Peace Square favorite!
