## In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, carrying on the legacy of Daeheung Restaurant, which opened in Chungjang-ro 5-ga in 1950. Eating solo as the first customer of the day, the writer had the 1-person seafood scorched-rice soup for ₩15,900 and tried the house-made noodle jjajang served on the side. The seafood scorched-rice soup was good, but the jjajang made with in-house roasted chunjang sauce left an even stronger impression.

## 76 years of Daeheung Restaurant's flavor, now at Mayway in Cheomdan

Mayway is a well-known spot in Cheomdan. There's usually a reason a flavor stays loved for so long.

Daeheung Restaurant started in 1950 in Chungjang-ro 5-ga, Gwangju. These days, plenty of restaurants come and go quickly in the same spot, so keeping a flavor alive for 76 years is meaningful in itself.

![Photo of old Chungjang-ro street](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-02-6a20e-m-800.webp)
*Source: Gwangju Ilbo blog (Chungjang-ro)*

Starting in 1950 in Chungjang-ro 5-ga, then moving through Juwol-dong and Bongseon-dong, the flavor and know-how built up over 76 years by Daeheung Restaurant now carries through to today's Mayway in Cheomdan.

So Mayway isn't just a newly opened Chinese restaurant — it feels more special knowing it's carrying on 76 years of history and tradition~

*Mayway, a popular Cheomdan restaurant*

It's right across from Cheomdan Mustard Seed Church, right next to Jinsim Donkkaseu.

### Parking

Mayway doesn't have its own parking lot. It's very close to Lotte Mart, though~ You could park at the mart while grocery shopping and stop by afterward~

### Economy recovery promotion

![Sign for ₩1,000 tangsuyuk promotion with 2 draft beers ordered](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-04-1vusu-900.webp)

At Mayway, order just 2 cold draft beers and you can get tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) for only ₩1,000.

## What makes Mayway stand out

![Sign describing house-made noodles and fresh domestic sirloin tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-05-3hquj-668.webp)

They make house noodles fresh every single day, and the tangsuyuk is fried using only fresh, never-frozen domestic sirloin, apparently.

### Interior

A tidy, calm, understated interior in wood and white tones.

I went right at the 11am opening and ended up being the first customer. Great for taking photos — nice and uncrowded. Very upscale atmosphere.

You order by scanning the QR code at the table.

### What I ordered

What I ordered was the 1-person seafood scorched-rice soup. ₩15,900.

![Phone screen showing completed order for 1-person seafood scorched-rice soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-08-xhri6-900.webp)

Order complete, right there on my phone.

## Self-serve side dish bar, and unlimited rice

Side dishes are self-serve. Green onion kimchi, pickled radish, and an onion-corn salad. No need to ask for more pickled radish — help yourself as much as you like~

Rice is also self-serve, take as much as you want. You know that moment when you're eating jjajang and suddenly crave rice? When you want to mix it into the jjajang sauce, you can just scoop some without feeling awkward about it.

### Basic table setting

The table comes set with a cup, personal plate, chili powder, soy sauce, and vinegar.

![Plate of green onion kimchi and pickled radish from the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-09-ndtt9-900.webp)

I don't eat a lot of side dishes, so I only took a little.

## Sweet potato fritters

![Sweet potato fritters served before the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-10-1u1pb-900.webp)

While waiting for the food, they bring out sweet potato fritters first. Thoughtful touch for customers, right? Rather than a thick batter, the coating was thin, which I liked. When the flour coating is thick it gets greasy, but this felt more like eating a sweet potato stick!!

## 1-person seafood scorched-rice soup, the moment the sauce is poured

![Scorched rice and seafood sauce served separately on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-11-5r5o0-900.webp)

![Pouring seafood sauce onto the scorched rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-12-1yrul-900.webp)

The scorched rice and seafood sauce come out separately, and they pour it together right at the table. Oh~ the sound of the sauce bubbling is a work of art.

Let's stir it all up and try a bite. Ooh, so hot my tongue nearly flew off~

Let's try the jjukkumi (webfoot octopus). This is also~ so hot. I'll need to scoop some out to cool. Blowing on it, come on, cool down faster. While it cools, let's see what's in here — jjukkumi, squid.

![Squid and mushrooms inside the seafood scorched-rice soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-13-1p9x3-900.webp)

There's a good variety of mushrooms too. Enoki, king oyster, wood ear. Um, there's one more whose shape is a bit ambiguous — button mushroom, maybe? Hahaha, moving on.

![Shrimp in the seafood scorched-rice soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-14-18bmp-900.webp)

Shrimp. Missed getting a shot of the bok choy though.

![A spoonful of seafood scorched-rice soup soaked in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-15-h1n31-900.webp)

Let's take a spoonful~ There's the deep umami of the seafood broth with a hint of that wok-fire aroma, and the scorched rice has soaked up the sauce so the edges are soft while the center is still crunchy.

![A round-headed piece of jjukkumi](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-16-ahstu-900.webp)

The jjukkumi is so cute, right? That round little head haha

As the hot seafood sauce soaks into the scorched rice it gets moist and soft, but it needs a bit of time. Don't eat it too fast.

![Scorched rice soaked with seafood broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-17-aaqdq-900.webp)

Now the umami from the seafood broth has properly soaked into the scorched rice, and the more you chew, the more that nutty savoriness comes through — totally my style~ Good Good~~

## The house-noodle jjajang I got on the side

Haha, this jjajang made with fresh potato and house-pulled noodles came served on the side. Look at that shine.

The noodles are hand-kneaded and pulled fresh in-house, chewy yet soft with great elasticity.

I'm actually not a big noodle person. This was a total surprise. So good, highly highly recommend. The nutty flavor, umami, and wok-fire aroma all came together perfectly for my taste~

![Glossy house-noodle jjajang](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-18-190gn-900.webp)

I think it's this chunjang (black bean sauce). There's a reason the jjajang here was especially good — they roast the chunjang themselves in-house.

![Jjajang mixed with in-house roasted chunjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-19-rj1cf-900.webp)

Maybe that's why — the moment you mix the jjajang, you get that nutty aroma right away, and the subtle wok-fire flavor that builds as you eat is exactly my style~

## Dessert: strawberry ice cream

![Strawberry ice cream served for dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch/maywei-chumdan-seafood-nurungji-solo-lunch-20-br2jk-900.webp)

I always need something sweet at the end, and here they bring out strawberry ice cream for dessert.

From the sweet potato fritters at the start to the ice cream at the end, it felt like every detail was carefully thought through from the customer's perspective. Definitely coming back~~

Mayway's signature stone jjajang looks delicious too, right?

## Final thoughts

With such a wide menu, it's a great place to eat simply with the 1-person set if you're solo, and just as good for groups of family or friends to order several dishes and share.

The seafood scorched-rice soup was delicious, but honestly the jjajang was the real standout for me. The house-made noodles were great, and the nutty flavor of the in-house roasted chunjang along with that subtle wok-fire taste were exactly my style.

Between the clean interior, the self-serve bar, and the dessert ice cream, it was a really satisfying meal.
