## In short

Izakaya Kitsune is a Japanese izakaya on Teokgu-ro 23-gil near the Songtan Branch Office in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, run by a chef who trained in Japan. On a weekday visit at 7 p.m. for a wedding-invitation gathering, the assorted sashimi platter, sukiyaki finished with udon noodles, and a non-alcoholic Earl Grey highball came to the table; the sashimi had no fishy edge and the sukiyaki with udon was filling. With about 30 types of sake, Izakaya Kitsune suits both solo drinking and group dinners.

*A review of Izakaya Kitsune, a restaurant-bar near Songtan Branch Office*

I was looking for a good restaurant-bar near Songtan Branch Office when I found Izakaya Kitsune. It was actually my first time in the Songtan Branch Office area of Pyeongtaek, and it turns out there are a lot of great spots. Among them, Izakaya Kitsune stood out as a great place for solo drinking, so I wanted to introduce it.

## What kind of place is Izakaya Kitsune in Pyeongtaek?

Izakaya Kitsune is a Japanese-style izakaya near Songtan Branch Office in Pyeongtaek. I was scouting Songtan restaurants for a wedding-invitation gathering and heard the chef had trained directly in Japan before opening this izakaya, so I went to check it out.

The sign for Izakaya Kitsune caught my eye because of the cute fox drawing on it — turns out "kitsune" means fox in Japanese, haha!

![Entrance and business hours sign at Izakaya Kitsune](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-03-1mgwl-756.webp)

The signature menu items at Izakaya Kitsune are apparently the assorted sashimi platter and Uni Samhap (sea urchin, scallop, and sweet shrimp trio). There are also set menus that include the signature dishes, which is perfect for someone like me who takes forever to order. And with 30 types of sake, 14 kinds of Japanese shochu, and about 10 whiskies, they say the staff can recommend drinks that pair well with the food.

## Inside Izakaya Kitsune: seating, mood and private group hire

Inside, Izakaya Kitsune has a cozy atmosphere, and the bar seats looked comfortable for solo drinking. It can apparently accommodate anywhere from 15 to 22 people, so group bookings are possible! I came for a wedding-invitation gathering this time, but it also looks like a great spot for a date or a work dinner.

I visited around 7pm on a weekday, and they showed us to a cozy two-seat table. I was happy to see a basic side dish of Japanese-style cabbage salad, which I love. The utensils also came individually wrapped, which felt very hygienic.

## Half-size dishes and drinks-only orders for solo drinkers

At Izakaya Kitsune, solo weekday drinkers can order just drinks without any food, and side dishes can be switched to half sizes. You can also have a little small talk with the good-looking owner — who knows, you might even score some extra service, haha!

Even outside of weekday solo drinking, there's a Naver receipt review event that gets you a free glass of sake or shochu. And if you turn on Naver notifications for Izakaya Kitsune, they'll give you a seasonal handmade sorbet — I recommend it!

## Izakaya Kitsune menu: food, sake, shochu and whisky

Uni Samhap (sea urchin, scallop, and sweet shrimp), assorted sashimi, and homemade jambon pasta are the recommended dishes. There's also wagyu tataki (sea urchin), kabayaki (grilled eel), grilled Spanish mackerel, grilled Chilean sea bass, sweet-and-spicy fried eggplant, sukiyaki, fried shishamo, and more — a real treasure trove of side dishes. There's even a solo-friendly single portion of mackerel sashimi, so solo drinking here feels totally doable.

![Drink menu listing Japanese shochu](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-12-weopi-686.webp)

![Menu listing whisky options](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-13-m3tlm-676.webp)

![Menu of highballs and other drinks](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-14-b1526-685.webp)

![A glass of non-alcoholic Earl Grey highball](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-15-161am-658.webp)

As I mentioned earlier, Izakaya Kitsune has about 30 types of sake, 14 kinds of Japanese shochu, and around 10 whiskies! The chef himself will recommend drinks that pair well with your food. I really don't think there's another restaurant-bar around Songtan Branch Office with this much drink variety. They even allow corkage, so keep that in mind (corkage is a paid option).

Since one of my friends was driving, I unfortunately had to order the non-alcoholic Earl Grey highball! I thought I'd be a little disappointed since it was non-alcoholic, but it was plenty delicious and I was very satisfied. It's still a highball in spirit, so it was great for setting the mood — glad I ordered it.

## What comes on the assorted sashimi platter, and how it tastes

Today's assorted sashimi platter at Izakaya Kitsune included scallop, tuna belly, octopus wasabi, salmon, squid, red seabream, mackerel, and abalone! There was even a note on the menu about which drinks pair well, which made ordering easy. The colorful aged sashimi looked so appetizing.

![Aged sashimi with tuna belly and salmon](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-17-g3b8a-768.webp)

![Close-up of red seabream and mackerel sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-18-1b5v0-826.webp)

The red seabream, mackerel, tuna, and salmon were thick-cut with great texture and absolutely no fishy taste, so they were easy to enjoy. There was a generous pile of onions under the salmon sashimi, and eating them together made it even tastier.

![Abalone, octopus wasabi, scallop, and squid](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-19-oekcj-785.webp)

I tried one of each — abalone, octopus wasabi, scallop, and squid. The abalone really wasn't tough at all and had just the right chewy texture. The octopus wasabi had a well-balanced amount of wasabi, so I could enjoy it without my nose stinging. I realized why the assorted sashimi is listed as the owner's recommendation — it looked great and tasted even better!

## Sukiyaki at Izakaya Kitsune, finished with udon noodles

Next, we ordered sukiyaki as a soup-based side dish. It came out generously loaded with vegetables, mushrooms, and meat, looking delicious as expected. It also came with a soy sauce dip topped with an egg yolk to go along with the sukiyaki.

![A pot of sukiyaki loaded with vegetables and meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-22-1pqxs-900.webp)

![Sukiyaki soy sauce dip topped with an egg yolk](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-23-1i29v-900.webp)

After boiling it on the burner for about 10 minutes, the meat cooked to just the right doneness! I love mushrooms, so I was happy to see so many different kinds, and big ones too — there were three types: enoki, shiitake, and king oyster mushrooms.

Lured by the smell, I quickly stirred the egg yolk into the sukiyaki sauce. Dipping the meat and mushrooms in deeply gave a great savory flavor — really delicious, as expected. Of course, it's plenty tasty even without the sauce, since the broth itself is just that good.

![Sukiyaki with added udon noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki/izakaya-kitsune-pyeongtaek-songtan-sashimi-sukiyaki-24-kxdp0-846.webp)

The sukiyaki broth was so good that I was scooping it up mindlessly, and then I suddenly came to my senses and added the noodle option. With the udon noodles thrown in, the two of us ate until we were completely full. If you go to Izakaya Kitsune near Songtan Branch Office, I recommend ordering sukiyaki as your soup-based side dish!

## Is Izakaya Kitsune worth a visit in Songtan?

The assorted sashimi at Izakaya Kitsune had absolutely no fishy taste and was very enjoyable, and the sukiyaki was tastier than expected. I went for a wedding-invitation gathering near Songtan Branch Office, and it made me happy that my friend enjoyed the food too.
