## In short

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is an outdoor Korean BBQ restaurant beside a creek in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, known for tomato-jang (tomato sauce) pork belly. Three adults and one child, visiting after the child was discharged from hospital, ordered two servings of jar-aged tomato-jang pork belly (20,000 won), the crispy-outside, chewy-inside potato pancake and a tteokgalbi kids set, then got a cauldron fried rice with pollack roe and scorched rice free through the review event. The savory depth of the 48-hour-aged tomato sauce, the remarkably crisp potato pancake and the creekside outdoor tables are what make 2002 Witch's Arpeggio worth the drive.

My kid had been sick and hospitalized for a few days, cooped up in a small room with mom the whole time, and once we got discharged, staying home just made her restless and bored out of her mind. So we rushed over to my mother-in-law's place — it was the weekend anyway, and I wanted to go somewhere a bit further out, eat something good, and get a little nature. Turns out I found a place that hit every one of those needs perfectly.

## What kind of restaurant is 2002 Witch's Arpeggio?

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a tomato-jang pork belly BBQ restaurant on Suryero 661beon-gil in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi. Just from the name alone, you're left wondering what kind of place this even is — and true to the "witch" concept, the exterior does look a little mysterious.

![Mysterious restaurant exterior with a witch concept](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-02-z7tl1-900.webp)

But once you actually visit, none of that gloomy, spooky witch imagery applies at all — it's an outdoor BBQ spot right by a lovely creek, tucked into nature. The weather was cool too, so I felt genuinely great being there.

### Outdoor tables beside the creek

I was so sad we hadn't come here in summer, because the outdoor seating was exactly my thing. Spacious, breezy, and the tables still had that classic outdoor-BBQ feel to them.

And right under the tables, creek water trickled by — so healing for both body and mind. Since it's water coming down from the mountain, it's genuinely clean. Why didn't I come here in summer?? T_T

## What is tomato-jang? A sauce aged 48 hours in clay jars

I was curious what this "tomato-jang" was all about. Instead of the gochujang (red chili paste) most people picture when they hear "jang," they age tomatoes for 48 hours to make the sauce, then use it to season the pork belly — which is why you see countless jars of aging tomatoes inside the restaurant. I'd never even heard of tomato-jang before in my life, so it was fascinating and I was really looking forward to it.

We visited as 3 adults and 1 kid, so we ordered two servings of the jar-aged tomato-jang pork belly, one crispy-outside-chewy-inside potato pancake, and one tteokgalbi kids set.

Quick note!!! The stone-pot pollack roe fried rice is a must-eat menu item, and all you have to do is leave a simple review, so definitely!! write a review and get the fried rice for free.

## First look at the tomato-jang pork belly

The moment we ordered, the food started coming out — and wow, what is this?? The color was intensely red, kind of like a beef tartare, or like it was caked in gochujang, but this was actually pork belly made with tomato-jang.

A dish I'd never seen the likes of before, with a cool creek flowing behind it. I've honestly eaten pretty much everything, but since this was something totally new to me, I was really excited.

### Side dishes: tomato kimchi, wheat crepes and japchae

The side dishes got set up too. All kinds of lettuce wraps, tomato kimchi, wheat crepes for wrapping the meat, and even nicely seasoned japchae (stir-fried glass noodles).

Also my first time trying this — I could taste the tomato's brightness and its aged depth at the same time.

## Is 2002 Witch's Arpeggio good with kids? The tteokgalbi kids set

2002 Witch's Arpeggio has a separate tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) kids set for ₩5,000. When you're eating out with a kid these days, a kids' menu is one of the most welcome things, and having one here was really appreciated.

![Tteokgalbi kids set spread](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-14-1sycx-m-900.webp)

Even though my kid's been in a bit of a rice slump lately, she ate the rice and the hamburg steak happily. Oh, and she loved the japchae too.

The staff grill all the meat for you, so you don't have to worry about it — just start with the potato pancake fresh off the pan.

![Freshly fried crispy-outside-chewy-inside potato pancake](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-15-1a7yc-1200.webp)

Whoa, that visual!?!? The potato pancake looked like it had been deep-fried in oil — something I'd never seen before — and the tomato-jang pork belly was a menu I'd never encountered either. 2002 Witch's Arpeggio's menu is completely my type. New things are always thrilling!!

Once the meat was almost done, they finished it off with a torch and explained how to eat it — great explanation, adored my kid, and were just kind through and through. Usually at famous spots like this, the staff tend to be curt and checked-out, but here everyone was genuinely kind, no exaggeration!!

## The crispiest potato pancake at 2002 Witch's Arpeggio

The crispy-outside-chewy-inside potato pancake is ₩25,000, and it wasn't just crispy-outside — it was ultra-crispy-outside!!!!!!!!!!!! No exaggeration at all, this was hands-down the crispiest potato pancake I've had in my entire life. I have zero idea how they made it, but how is it possible to get it this crispy?? And the inside was still so chewy.

## How spicy is it? Tasting the tomato-jang pork belly

Anyway, everything's cooked now, so let's eat. You can choose the spice level for the tomato-jang pork belly, and I went with the mildest option, which is about as spicy as Jin Ramen.

![A fully cooked piece of tomato-jang pork belly](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-17-anftk-900.webp)

![Grill finished off with a torch](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-18-mvs4m-900.webp)

Since it's a sauce made from aged tomatoes, it's definitely different from gochujang. There's just a hint of spiciness, then a wave of savory depth kicks in with sweetness and a touch of tanginess. It's not the straightforward salty-sweet you get from typical gochujang pork belly — it tasted more like a well-balanced, deep, dish-like sauce.

![Tomato-jang pork belly with the sauce reduced down](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-19-1vysq-900.webp)

Naturally, the more it reduces, the stronger and richer the flavor gets, so some people might find it a bit salty. Pairing it with the various lettuce wraps balances the seasoning out perfectly.

![Tomato-jang pork belly wrapped in a wheat crepe](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-21-1fsgl-900.webp)

Personally every wrap combo worked, but adding a little rice was the best. I kept wondering how it could taste like this without being gochujang, and honestly I was surprised by just how good it was.

## Are two servings enough for three adults?

The menu doesn't list the gram weight of the meat, but with 3 people sharing 2 servings plus the potato pancake, we were completely stuffed — though we still couldn't resist the fried rice.

![Pollack roe and scorched rice fried rice being made in a cast-iron pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly/namyangju-witch-arpeggio-tomato-pork-belly-24-1eovy-900.webp)

## Cauldron fried rice with pollack roe and scorched rice

They fry the rice in a cast-iron pot, deliberately letting it stick a bit at the bottom, then scrape off that scorched crust — pure pro-level skill on display.

As I mentioned earlier, write a review and get it, but even if you skip that out of laziness, you must eat this fried rice regardless. The grains stay perfectly separate and fluffy, and the pollack roe brings insane savory depth. It was the tastiest fried rice I've had recently, and I especially loved that it didn't taste like kimchi fried rice.

## Wait times and plans to return

Kicking myself for not coming in summer, I asked how the wait is like during that season, and sure enough, there's apparently a line even before opening. But with this kind of setting and this kind of food, it seems like it'd be great in any season, so I'm planning to come back soon — this time with some drinks, to enjoy it even more.
