## The bright yellow exterior and the vibe inside

It's located on the shopping street across from Saetteo Cora in Munheung-dong. It's right on a main road, so it was really easy to find. There's no way even someone with zero sense of direction could get lost — the building's bright yellow exterior screams 'I'm a jokbal restaurant' from far away.

The interior was spacious and decorated with a natural wood theme. There were cozy group sofa seats too, so it'd be great whether you're coming with a friend for a few drinks or for a work dinner.

They even had baby chairs ready, so it's also a great spot for a family meal out with young kids. It felt like a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere to enjoy jokbal with anyone.

> The soft tofu stew that basically demands soju

## The complimentary tofu stew with ramen noodles and a raw egg

The soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae) comes as standard. The pot arrives packed full of soft, chunky curds of tofu sitting in a spicy broth.

Once it's boiling on the burner, you crack in the raw egg and drop in the ramen noodles, and the smell that comes off it — spicy like jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) — made me think, this is definitely a winner.

The moment I took a sip of that spicy, soft broth that reminded me of jjamppong, before the main jokbal even arrived, it was already soju time.

### The nine-compartment wood tray of side dishes

Have you seen a jokbal spot in Munheung-dong, Gwangju that lays out its side dishes so neatly in a nine-compartment wood tray? From dried radish strips and pickled radish to lettuce wraps, garlic, salted shrimp, ssamjang (dipping sauce), chojang (vinegar chili sauce), and their special sauce — it was a hygienic, perfectly set spread.

## So what does the wood-fired trotters taste like?

Here comes the wood-fired jokbal that even Korea's three major broadcasters have taken notice of. As soon as it hit the table, the roasted aroma of the wood-fired trotters hit me instantly. They only use domestic front legs and boil them with over 30 ingredients apparently — the smell alone told my nose this was going to be good.

Put the wood-fired jokbal on a lettuce leaf and top it with punchy garlic and dried radish strips. Did the start-of-autumn magic hit the jokbal too, or why is this so good.

Have you seen jokbal blooming on pickled radish?! Chewiness at 200%, plus that satisfying gristly bite. The mini trotters are honestly the real highlight for anyone who truly knows jokbal. Picking it apart to eat is just so much fun.

> Old-style fried chicken, crisp outside and juicy inside

## The half chicken I got from the receipt-review event

![Half order of old-style fried chicken served as a side](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-munheung-firewood-jokbal-jipbaewon/gwangju-munheung-firewood-jokbal-jipbaewon-19-1buzw-900.webp)

Turns out you can choose a side service when you order a main dish. I chose the half old-style fried chicken, and it came fresh out of the fryer, still steaming. And you know how it is — old-style fried chicken has to come with that mayo-and-ketchup cabbage salad combo, right?! I love that Jokbal Jipbaewon nailed even that detail.

![Freshly fried old-style chicken with mayo-ketchup cabbage salad](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-munheung-firewood-jokbal-jipbaewon/gwangju-munheung-firewood-jokbal-jipbaewon-20-16sny-788.webp)

Crispy outside and juicy inside, even the chicken breast was tender. It was seasoned well, so it tasted perfectly balanced even eaten plain.

At Jokbal Jipbaewon, if you take part in the receipt review event, you can get a side that's just as good as a main dish, so don't miss it. If you want to enjoy proper wood-fired jokbal along with a spicy tofu stew, I'd recommend Jokbal Jipbaewon, a jokbal spot in Munheung-dong, Gwangju.
