It was a day I visited Cheongju with my kids. While thinking about where to have lunch, Julseoneun Banjeom, famous as a Gangnae must-visit, came to mind. It's so well known as a Cheongju favorite that we headed straight for the alley near Chungcheong University to catch the opening time.

## Is there a wait at Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae right at opening?

Arriving in front of the shop, the waiting chairs were the first thing I noticed. True to its name — literally

True to its name — literally "the restaurant people line up for" — there were already people in the waiting chairs even right at opening time. That scene alone explains just how popular this Gangnae favorite is.

They're open from 11am to 8pm, with a break time from 1pm to 5pm you'll want to avoid. Closed every Sunday, apparently.

## Inside the restaurant and QR code ordering

Walking into Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae, the place was packed with locals and students. On the walls were traces of handwritten notes from customers and a cute jjamppong-shaped clock. You could see the marks of years of being loved — it really felt like a genuine Gangnae favorite. Ordering was easy too, just scan the QR code on the table.

## What we ordered: sirloin jjajangmyeon and lemon tangsuyuk

Thick cuts of sirloin, piled on generously. Paired with the umami-rich jjajang sauce, we cleaned the bowl.

![A bowl of sirloin jjajangmyeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch-10-rb0pl-966.webp)

A subtle lemon fragrance + sweet-and-sour sauce + crispy fried coating. No greasiness at all, ate it down to the last bite. After ordering with the table QR code, I looked around a bit. The table next to us was giving off the smell of scallion-and-beef jjamppong, and that rich broth smell was something else. It wasn't long before the food came out, fast.

## Sirloin jjajangmyeon: the kids left nothing behind

- Unlike regular jjajang, this one comes with thick cuts of sirloin
- The more you chew, the more juice and rich jjajang umami comes out
- The kids finished every last noodle — dishwashing ending confirmed

The sirloin jjajangmyeon had plenty of meat and great umami. With the thick sirloin mixed in, the chewing experience was on another level. It felt like a step up from regular jjajangmyeon. The kids didn't leave a single noodle in the bowl.

## Also worth ordering: kkanpung fried rice and cream jjamppong

✅ Kkanshyo fried rice — limited to 30 bowls a day. It's a popular limited item that sells out early. You have to come right after opening to get it. My goal for next visit — definitely trying this.

✅ Cream jjamppong — cream sauce loaded with seafood. It's a menu item even kids who can't handle spicy food can enjoy. They use gochugaru (chili powder) from a local mill, so the jjamppong broth is sharp and clean-tasting. It's not just spicy for the sake of it — there's real depth of flavor. Perfect for curing a hangover too.

The sirloin jjajangmyeon has thick meat that the kids especially loved. The jjajang sauce itself has such good umami that it's rich without being salty. It's a menu item that shows off this Gangnae favorite's fundamentals.

![Golden-fried lemon tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch-17-5qqau-966.webp)

## Lemon tangsuyuk for 13,900 won: the kids reached for it first

- At today's prices, this price is unreal
- Golden, crispy fried tangsuyuk topped with a subtle lemon fragrance
- The sweet-and-sour sauce completely cuts through any greasiness
- Tangsuyuk you never get tired of — the kids reached for it first

The moment the lemon tangsuyuk hit the table, the lemon scent spread first. The golden-fried pork was coated in a subtle lemon fragrance and sweet-and-sour sauce, so there was no greasy feeling at all. The lemon completely cuts through that classic tangsuyuk heaviness.

![Close-up of tangsuyuk coated in lemon sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch-18-imhft-966.webp)

![A single piece of lemon tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch/julseoneun-banjeom-gangnae-kids-lunch-19-1axj7-966.webp)

₩13,900 is a pretty reasonable price given today's cost of living. The kids reached for it first and ate it all. There's a reason lemon tangsuyuk is a popular item at this Cheongju Chinese restaurant favorite. The lemon tangsuyuk + sirloin jjajangmyeon combo was the answer for that day. The tanginess of the tangsuyuk and the umami of the jjajangmyeon balance each other out. Alternating between the two dishes made every bite good, right to the end.

## Final verdict on Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae

Thick, umami-rich sirloin + lemon-scented sweet-and-sour tangsuyuk for ₩13,900. We stopped by during a Cheongju trip with the kids, and both bowls came back spotless. I got to experience firsthand why it's called "the restaurant people line up for." Next visit, my goal is to take on the 30-bowl-a-day kkanshyo fried rice.
