## In short

Buja Hodu is a dessert café in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, serving rice-batter walnut pastries and drinks. I bought a 24-piece mixed box, and the fragrant matcha flavor and big walnuts stood out with coffee. Verdict: a refined, not-too-sweet Gyeongju travel gift.

On this Gyeongju trip, I came across Buja Hodu while walking along Hwangridan-gil!! Haha. With its 100% rice batter, it tasted like a whole different level from any walnut pastry I’d had before?!?!? It was so refined that it looked perfect as a Hwangridan-gil dessert gift.

It was so delicious after trying it that we brought home a box too! We ducked into a side alley off Hwangridan-gil’s main street, and there was even something like a flea market along this stretch, plus tons of great dessert spots. I saw lots of places focused on takeout desserts.

## A great grab-and-go pairing for Hwangridan-gil

What caught our eye was Buja Hodu: walnut pastries, ice cream, and affogato coffee together! It looked like such a good combination to carry around while strolling Hwangridan-gil. A sweet pick-me-up and caffeine at once! Isn’t that a two-for-one travel dessert~~~

## Gift wrapping and four walnut pastry flavors

Buja Hodu offers elegant gift wrapping, so it is also a popular choice for holiday gifts. They can wrap it in bojagi (a traditional Korean wrapping cloth), and there is standard box packaging too. Even the standard box gives off such a luxe feeling at Buja Hodu.

Buja Hodu’s walnut pastry flavors are low-sugar red bean paste, pea cream cheese, matcha, and almond praline! There are four varieties, and each one has its own charm, so I recommend trying a little of everything.

There are 10-, 15-, and 24-piece boxes, available as mixed or original sets, so you can put together all sorts of packages. I was curious about every flavor, so I bought the 24-piece mixed box.

They sell drinks too, and if you write a receipt review, you get two walnut pastries or one Americano for free! If you get the two pastries, you can pull one out and eat it right away, haha. It is easy to run low on sugar after getting worn out by the crowds on Hwangridan-gil, haha, so you can recharge right away with a walnut pastry~

That is how we packed up a box! Oh, and there are outdoor tables where you can sit and have a quick bite before heading on.

## Big walnuts and a not-too-sweet taste

The pastries themselves are larger than the walnut pastries I usually have.

I pulled one out right away, and they gave us the original flavor—look at that satisfied expression.... The walnuts were full of nutty flavor, and they said the low-sugar red bean filling is all made in-house too. The owner’s pride in these walnut pastries was really shining through! They said they use genuinely good ingredients, so I gave one to my child right away too.

At a nearby café, I had coffee and immediately snacked on another walnut pastry too.

## My first fragrant matcha flavor

Buja Hodu makes wholesome walnut pastries with 100% rice batter and low-sugar red bean filling! I have tried lots of inventive walnut pastry flavors, haha, but matcha was a first for me?!!! The fragrant matcha aroma fills your whole mouth.

A pea cream cheese pastry and an original walnut pastry together. For a simple breakfast, I made coffee and ate two walnut pastries, haha. But after those two, I wanted more, so I grabbed one more from the fridge ^___^

Ahh, so yummy!!!! I have often seen walnut pastries with only the tiiiiniest bit of walnut inside, but these had truly big pieces. The walnuts themselves are large, and because the walnuts are big, the pastries are bigger too.

## How did I store them after buying them?

They were best on the day I bought them. I think they can be kept at room temperature or refrigerated for up to three days, then it is best to freeze them after that, haha. It is also fine to eat what you want that day and freeze the rest right away!

Of the walnut pastries I have tried lately, Buja Hodu was the most refined-tasting and easy to eat because it was not overly sweet~ I can see why the owner is so proud~ I think everyone would love walnut pastries from here as a gift when you visit Gyeongju.
