It's been ages since I posted on this blog haha. Planning a trip to Gyeongju, or are you walking Hwangnidang-gil right now? There's a dessert that's been heating up social media lately — fruit mochi! There's a spot on Hwangnidang-gil, small and cute, that grabs your attention as you pass. That's Tareudang (타르당), where plump fruit mochi are waiting. 🤍

## Tareudang's hours, parking and takeout-only counter

Tareudang is a fruit mochi shop at 49 Sajeong-ro, Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju. It's open 11:00-19:00, and there's no parking. It runs as a takeout-only shop, so it's really good for a quick stop during a Gyeongju trip, holding your mochi as a snack while you walk.

## How long is the wait at Tareudang on a Friday at 1pm?

It was around 1pm on a Friday and there was still a wait! I got lucky and bought without waiting, but since purchases move quickly, I'd guess even with a wait it'd only take about 5 minutes haha. Mochi get ₩500 off per piece when you buy 4 or more, so it's great for buying a bunch as gifts! The flavors on offer were fresh chocolate, peach yogurt, mango yogurt, fig yogurt, pineapple, and gold kiwi!

Since fresh fruit isn't always in season, I'd guess the fruit lineup changes by season! True to its name, this is one giant mochi haha.

Stepping inside and looking at the showcase, alongside the signature giant fruit mochi there's a range of other desserts including tempting tarts, so there's real fun in picking what to eat.

I'll have to come back for the tarts next time haha. And I really need to come back in winter for the strawberry and tangerine mochi haha. Isn't strawberry the best fruit mochi flavor?

Cute little orange Tareudang, visible even from a distance 🤍 We had to head all the way to Daegu, so we paid an extra ₩1,000 for a cooler bag plus ice pack, but it turns out it's free if you leave a Naver receipt review!

If you're picking these up as gifts on your Gyeongju trip, definitely take advantage of the review event ><. Once you hold the mochi, you're first struck by its overwhelming size, about the size of a fist, and that's because whole fresh fruit is generously packed inside.

## How big are the fig, mango and peach mochi, and why castella crumbs?

I bought fig, mango, and peach, and even the smallest fig mochi was bigger than an adult woman's fist!!

Fruit mochi is usually coated in white starch powder on the outside, which can stick to your teeth or get messy while eating, but Tareudang's is unusually coated in a generous layer of savory, soft castella powder, so you can enjoy it sweetly right to the end. That said, it does shed more powder, so I don't think you could ever eat this in a car haha.

## Inside a Tareudang mochi: yogurt, red bean and half a mango

The gorgeous cross-section of the mochi! Inside there's yogurt together with red bean, and since the red bean isn't too sweet, the fruit flavor comes through even more. The mango looked like it took up almost half the mochi! It was really big, and the mango was chilled rather than frozen, so it was incredibly delicious haha.

Some places that use frozen mango have that distinct off, gassy taste, but Tareudang's fruit was so, so good! The mango also had moist yogurt inside, and while the mochi skin isn't the super-thin style, the fruit packed inside is so big and substantial that the chewy texture and rich juice come together in a fantastic combination in your mouth.
