Honestly, I didn't have especially high expectations when it came to pasta or steak in Ilsan. I had this prejudice that Western food outside Seoul would somehow be a notch below in quality. But Upstairs Kitchen completely and neatly shattered that assumption. It had quietly built a reputation as a good restaurant in Bamridan-gil, and there was a reason for it.

## The mood of a Bamgasi Village alley washed in sunset light

Tucked into an alley in Ilsan's Bamgasi Village, this place feels different before you even step inside. Its European-style antique interior feels as though it has settled just slightly apart from the alley, and when I arrived around sunset, the orange light filtering through the windows blended perfectly with the wood-toned interior.

In that atmosphere, the conversation naturally deepened. Add a lovely setting to delicious food, and conversations are bound to run long on their own.

## Red wine and sweet red wine

🍷 A glass of red wine beneath the sunset light—that's where the mood comes together. We ordered both a red wine and a sweet red wine. The red was moderately full-bodied and on the dry side, just the kind of wine that goes beautifully with food throughout the meal.

The sweet red wine was closer to the feel of Del Monte grape juice, I'd say—sweet enough for people who aren't used to wine to drink without any pressure. Switching between the two glasses was even more fun because their personalities were so different.

## Abalone risotto that stayed with me because it wasn't overpowering

✨ The abalone risotto was memorable precisely because it wasn't overpowering. Upstairs Kitchen is widely known as a pasta spot in Ilsan, but I found the abalone risotto even more impressive. “Wholesome risotto” is exactly the right description. It isn't rich or heavy; it's clean and nutty, with the distinctive aroma of abalone gently coming through.

It's truly comforting when you're worn out from heavily seasoned food. With every spoonful, it felt as if my stomach was settling down.

🍝 The tomato ragù pasta's unexpected tang is the key point. It was unlike the tomato pasta I usually eat. At first I wondered what made it different, but as I ate, a subtle acidity came through. It had a distinctive flavor, almost as if finely chopped kimchi had been added, and that tang kept it from feeling rich at all.

That actually meant I could eat the pasta all the way through without getting tired of it. I'd never had pasta in Ilsan with this much character before.

## Sirloin steak ordered medium-rare

🥩 The sirloin steak is the signature dish you absolutely have to order here. This is where Upstairs Kitchen's real skill with steak in Ilsan shows. I ordered it medium-rare, and the cross-section came out beautifully. The outside had a lightly seared aroma, while the inside was moist and full of juices.

The potatoes and accompanying vegetables weren't just side dishes either; they were choices that paired wonderfully with the steak. Alternate between them one by one, and the plate empties faster than you'd expect.

The bruschetta we received through a review event was a first for me, and the harmony of toppings over crisp bread worked far better than I expected. It was fun to look at and fun to eat.
