A weekend evening when late-night food was calling my name. Here's my review after visiting Gorae Byeoljang, a fantastic-value spot in Seongbok-dong.

## Saturday at 9pm: every table at Gorae Byeoljang taken

We showed up past 9pm on a Saturday. The place sits on the first floor of an apartment complex building. Maybe because it was a relaxed weekend evening, the place was already full. They said they'd call once a table opened up, so we left our number and wandered around the complex for a bit.

Not long after, we got the call from Gorae Byeoljang! We hadn't waited that long, but it still felt like great news haha. And so we sat down.

Ordering is done via kiosk at each table. Most places use these kiosks these days, and I like it — easy to browse the menu and no mistakes with the order.

## Byeoljang Set 30,000 won, whole chicken 18,000 won

The menu at Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch is huge, and this place... scrolling through it, the value is really impressive! These days a whole chicken at a branded chicken chain runs at least ₩22,000–23,000, but here it's just ₩18,000! We went with the standout value combo, the Byeoljang Set (Eungdapada Chicken + Jeonju-style pork jeon). A very reasonable ₩30,000!

## Freshly fried popcorn with free self-serve refills

Popcorn comes as the standard side dish, and this place has a popcorn machine — they actually pop it fresh in-house! Like at a movie theater, kernels were popping regularly, filling the place with buttery, nutty popcorn aroma. It's self-serve at a corner station, so you can refill as much as you like.

Hot, fresh, nutty popcorn, plus radish and the special sauce to go with the chicken. I'll mention it again later, but that special sauce is genuinely a standout.

You could easily start the meal with popcorn alone — our makgeolli (rice wine) time begins~

We ordered a bottle of makgeolli that seemed like it would go well with the jeon. Beer, soju, makgeolli, highballs — Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch stocks a huge lineup of drinks.

## How the fried chicken and Jeonju-style pork jeon taste

After a sip of makgeolli, our chicken arrived!

True to the name 'Eungdapada Chicken' (응답하라, meaning 'Reply'), it was a plain, unpretentious old-school market-style whole chicken — and I actually prefer this style to branded chicken, so it suited my taste perfectly. The batter was very crispy with just the right seasoning — a flavor that practically demands a drink!

Next came the Jeonju-style pork jeon (pan-fried meat slices). Jeon is usually made with beef, so pork jeon? I ordered it out of curiosity, and it turned out to be even better than expected! The texture is a bit firmer than beef, which actually gave it a nice bite, and the spring onion shreds served alongside were quite spicy, balancing out what could have felt greasy from the jeon.

Wrapping the spicy, sharp spring onion shreds around the jeon and rolling it up like this — absolutely top-notch! Ordered on its own, the jeon is only ₩14,000, and the portion was very generous too.

As for the chicken, what more is there to say — fried chicken is the right food in every season. Moist inside, crispy outside, fried just right. Is this a hidden Seongbok-dong chicken gem? Even the breast meat, which can be dry, stayed moist and had a clean, delicious flavor.

## The highlight: the minced garlic and cheongyang chili sauce

Today's highlight is this special sauce. Made with finely chopped garlic and cheongyang chili peppers, dipping a piece of chicken deep into it gives a sharp spiciness followed by a really refreshing finish — genuinely, genuinely delicious. They also serve the usual sweet-spicy chicken sauce, but for me, this special sauce beat it by far!

Gorae Byeoljang's chicken is a beer-summoning flavor. There's no way to resist. 'Excuse me, one more beer please!!!'

Today's perfect chimaek (chicken and beer) time! If this place were in my neighborhood, I'd want to drop by all the time — such a cozy, great-value bar. It's open until 2am, so I'd strongly recommend it to anyone craving late-night food — Gorae Byeoljang, a real Seongbok-dong local favorite. Confirmed: a genuine Suji favorite!
