I went to Flat Nine near Gangnam Station because I wanted a nice dinner out with a friend 🎷 I just wanted good food, but this place isn't only about the food — you get a live jazz performance too, which made it way more special than I expected!

With the dim lighting and jazz playing, the vibe was already so different from a regular dinner out. We ordered the Classic Course that night 😎

## Flat Nine: the mood at this Gangnam Station jazz bar

Flat Nine is a jazz bar that's great to visit near Gangnam Station when you want a bit of mood. There was a show going on while we ate, so we could just naturally watch it over dinner. That night's set was the Choi Myeongji Trio — the vocals were amazing, and the way the piano and drums came together was really nice.

I'm not usually someone who seeks out jazz shows on purpose, but hearing one live right in front of me while eating was way more fun than I expected. Mid-conversation I'd catch myself drifting off to focus on the music for a second haha.

## Flat Nine's menu and what comes in the Classic Course

What we ordered at Flat Nine was the Classic Course at ₩78,000. It's the course where Jeju black pork tenderloin steak is the main, and the dishes come out one at a time, which made it easy to eat slowly while watching the show!

### Welcome drink

First up was a welcome drink of cranberry, raspberry, mint and lemon topped with sparkling wine. It was light and refreshing, exactly the thing to wake up your appetite before the course started. Pretty color too, so of course I snapped a photo before diving in 📸

### Crispy potato

Second was thinly sliced potato stacked in layers and fried until crisp 💕 topped with lemon butter, shiso and chervil — crispy outside, still soft-potato inside on the bite. So good!

The lemon butter especially kept it from feeling heavy — it had this subtle brightness that kept me reaching for more 🍋🍋

### Focaccia

Freshly oven-baked focaccia came with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze. Being warm, it was already good on its own, but dipping it in the oil and balsamic gave it a whole different feel. Having bread pop up between courses was surprisingly filling.

### Squid and melon carpaccio

The salad course was a carpaccio of smoked squid and melon with thinly sliced pickled radish, finished with a charred paprika sauce. The squid-and-melon combo seemed a bit odd at first, but it worked better than I expected.

The smoked squid's gentle aroma paired with the melon's sweet, cool bite, and the pickled radish kept things clean overall — a good palate reset between the heavier dishes in the course!

### Mille-feuille lasagna with white truffle (+₩4,000)

The dish I was most excited for that day!! Ragù, béchamel and cheese layered between fresh pasta sheets, pan-seared and then oven-baked twice — a mille-feuille lasagna. You could choose basil tomato or white truffle sauce, and we paid the extra ₩4,000 for white truffle. The lasagna itself was great, but once that truffle aroma hit, it was on a whole other level!

If you like truffle, you'll probably love this. The rich ragù layered with béchamel and cheese, with that truffle scent lingering subtly after every bite — this really stuck with me. Personally one of my favorite dishes of the whole meal 🤍

### Jeju black pork tenderloin steak

The main of the Classic Course — dry-aged Jeju black pork tenderloin grilled over binchotan charcoal! Served with mango purée, pepper jus and grilled scallion. Grilling over binchotan gave it a subtle smokiness, and being dry-aged black pork, it felt distinct from a regular pork steak.

Pairing it with the mango purée added sweetness, while the pepper jus gave it a richer, more savory edge. Eating it alongside the grilled scallion made for a really good combo. Plated beautifully too — fun to photograph as a proper main course :)

### Dessert: chocolate cake

The final dessert was a chocolate cake with house-made cream cheese and nuts. I figured the last dessert would just be something light, but this was genuinely good too. The cream cheese and nuts with the chocolate cake gave it a nutty sweetness plus extra texture — the kind of thing that would pair nicely with coffee or a cocktail. A great way to end the course on a high note.

## Cocktails at Flat Nine 🍸 Godfather and Smoked Old Fashioned

We really did mean to just eat and leave that night~ but with the jazz show going and the mood being this good, we ended up ordering cocktails partway through hahaha. I got the Godfather, my friend got the Smoked Old Fashioned.

I have a thing for smoky flavors, and the Godfather was exactly my type (my perfect pick..!). That subtle smoky note was so good, and sipping it slowly while listening to jazz gave off a completely different mood than eating did.

I also tried a sip of my friend's Smoked Old Fashioned, and that was great too. Both cocktails matched the atmosphere so well that I almost wanted to order another one ~~~

## What makes dinner with a live jazz set better

The best thing about Flat Nine that day was, without a doubt, getting to enjoy food and a live performance at once. Eating good food while watching a show made time feel like it passed more slowly than a regular dinner out with a friend.

The Choi Myeongji Trio set in particular had great vocals, but hearing the piano and drums live really added to the experience. I started out thinking 'we'll just eat and go~' but ended up having cocktails and enjoying the whole show before we left haha.

## Is Flat Nine worth it? Final thoughts

If you're looking for somewhere with a good atmosphere near Gangnam Station, or want a slightly different kind of evening, Flat Nine seems like a solid choice. The ₩39,000 Classic Course brought out welcome drink, appetizers, focaccia, carpaccio, lasagna, Jeju black pork tenderloin steak and dessert one after another, which made for a nice, unhurried meal — and if you love white truffle like we do, I'd recommend paying the extra ₩4,000 for it.

But honestly, the biggest draw is being able to eat while watching a live jazz show. The vibe was good enough that I'd consider coming back next time with cocktails as the main goal rather than food 🎷🍸 A place I'll probably think of again when I want something a little more special than an ordinary meal near Gangnam Station, with music thrown in.

Good course food plus live jazz plus cocktails — a Gangnam Station jazz bar where we properly made the most of the evening 🤍
