## In short

Seongsan Bada Punggyeong (성산바다풍경) is a seafood stew and cutlassfish restaurant a 2–3 minute drive from Seongsan Ilchulbong in Seogwipo, Jeju. After getting up at 5am to watch the sunrise from the peak, I came down for a late breakfast of the house seafood stew, haemul ttukbaegi (16,000 won), loaded with abalone, scallops, sweet shrimp and blue crab in a spicy, bracing broth. When you have had your fill of cutlassfish dishes on Jeju, one bowl of this stew at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong is the answer.

This trip, I moved fast and early to catch the sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong. I woke up at 5am, watched the sunrise, and came down so hungry that I carefully searched for what to eat for brunch — and ended up at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong, known as a local favorite, for their seafood stew. Here's my review!

Every time I visit Jeju, Seongsan Ilchulbong is always on the itinerary.

I wanted a place actual locals eat at rather than a touristy spot pushing ads, and that's how I found Bada Punggyeong Haemul Ttukbaegi. When we arrived, it was packed with customers and known for its waiting line, so I headed straight over without hesitation.

I was a little tired from getting up early for sunrise and wanted something to settle my stomach — let me share my honest review of a brunch that exceeded expectations.

## Where is Seongsan Bada Punggyeong, and is there a wait?

Seongsan Bada Punggyeong is located on Seongsandeungyong-ro in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju, with fantastic accessibility — it's almost immediately reachable by car from Seongsan Ilchulbong. It's open daily from 08:00 to 20:00 (last order 19:00), so breakfast is possible too.

After finishing sunrise-watching and driving down, the timing lined up perfectly. Parking was well set up right in front and around the restaurant, so it was convenient to visit by car.

As a well-known spot for waits, the restaurant was already full of customers when we arrived. We got lucky and grabbed the last open table right before the wait line started, so we sat down with no wait at all.

Sure enough, the team right after us had to wait in line. I don't know how lucky we were to slip in at that exact moment. If you want to avoid waiting, I'd recommend coming slightly before or after peak lunch hours, or arriving a bit early.

## Inside Seongsan Bada Punggyeong: the dining room

The interior had that warm, familiar local-favorite feel, and the restaurant is fairly large, but every table was packed with customers. Even though it's near a famous tourist spot, there were plenty of what looked like actual Jeju locals alongside tourists — I felt like I'd found the right place.

What personally stood out were the friendly notes posted all around the restaurant — this was my first time seeing a place that doesn't require one order per person. It felt like the owner had a really generous mindset.

Overall the place was kept clean, and the staff and ajumma workers were cheerful and kind even while busy handling all the customers, so I could enjoy the meal comfortably the whole time.

This place is genuinely famous for its whole grilled cutlassfish and sweet-spicy braised cutlassfish too. The tables next to us and in front of us were all digging into cutlassfish dishes.

![Table setting with seafood stew at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch-10-1sbjq-1200.webp)

But we'd already stuffed ourselves with braised cutlassfish the night before, so this time we were craving a warm soup dish to clear our stomachs.

- Bada Punggyeong Seafood Stew: ₩16,000
- Obunjagi (Baby Abalone) Stew: ₩19,000
- Whole Grilled Cutlassfish (for 2): ₩60,000
- Braised Cutlassfish (for 2): ₩50,000
- Abalone Porridge: ₩15,000

Scanning the other tables, besides cutlassfish dishes, I noticed nearly every table had a stew pot on it. We didn't hesitate and picked the seafood stew too.

Apparently on days when the haenyeo (female divers) actually go out to sea, there's a special stew menu with even more fresh seafood loaded in. Unfortunately, the day we visited wasn't a diving day, so we ordered the regular Bada Punggyeong seafood stew.

## How the 16,000-won seafood stew and side dishes tasted

![Full table spread at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch-11-1o93m-966.webp)

The food came out pretty quickly,

The side dishes came out as pictured above — clean flavors and just the right seasoning, which made me think the owner really has good hands for cooking.

![Seaweed soup served as a default side at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch-13-1h61r-966.webp)

Along with the neat side dishes, a seaweed soup came out too, and honestly I could've finished a whole bowl of rice with just the seaweed soup and sides before the main dish even arrived. This place is really good for seaweed soup.

![Pickled vegetables and seaweed side dishes at Seongsan Bada Punggyeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch-14-12z2a-966.webp)

The pickled sides were tasty too, and above all the seaweed was genuinely delicious. The owner explained what it was, but I forgot the name...

Apparently it's only available this exact season, so it was a seasonal side dish, and it was incredibly good.

It was so good I refilled it several times from the self-serve counter, haha.

The self-serve side dishes were neatly and generously stocked too.

The moment the bubbling stew arrived, a fresh ocean scent burst out and made my mouth water instantly.

The visual was seriously impressive. Seeing the abalone still moving was wild.

On top of the stew pot sat fresh abalone, scallops, clams, sweet shrimp, blue crab and more — packed so full it looked like the pot might burst. Since we'd planned a long Jeju trip and had been eating braised fish for days straight, seeing this generous pile of seafood made me smile instantly.

First, I tried the most important part — the broth — with a spoonful. The moment I tasted it, I knew I'd made the right choice; the broth was deep and spicy-hot in a way that felt refreshing and totally cleared my head.

![Close-up of the spicy seafood stew broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch/seongsan-sunrise-peak-seafood-hotpot-brunch-21-sxixo-966.webp)

I'm pretty weak with spicy food and can't handle overly hot soups, but this stew's spice wasn't a capsaicin kind of heat — it was a deep umami spiciness that came from the seafood itself, harmoniously balanced, so it wasn't overwhelming at all and was just deliciously spicy. It was more of a refreshing, hot-and-savory level of spice.

The abalone in the stew was chewy and tender too, and each piece of seafood felt fresh, so it was genuinely fun picking through and eating each one.

## Is Seongsan Bada Punggyeong worth it for breakfast after the sunrise?

When you visit Jeju, you end up eating grilled or braised fish dish after dish, and after a few days it can start to feel a bit much. Right around that point, this spicy, refreshing seafood stew cleared my stomach completely. Especially as a brunch after waking up at 5am and climbing up and down Seongsan Ilchulbong like we did, it was truly the best.

My slightly tired body and stomach got fully cured by the warm broth — I really had a proper meal. If you're looking for a hearty, gut-friendly local brunch spot near Seongsan Ilchulbong, I recommend Bada Punggyeong Haemul Ttukbaegi.

So good! The famous cutlassfish dishes are great, but I'd also recommend trying a bowl of the stew loaded with fresh seafood, with its spicy, refreshing broth. It's perfect as a hangover-curing, stomach-settling meal after coming down from watching sunrise, just like we did — be sure to stop by!
