## In short

Boriook Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Suwon, Gyeonggi, serving unlimited barley rice, seasoned vegetables, and side dishes. We ordered barley rice and grilled mackerel for 28,000 won, then enjoyed warm japchae, spicy braised tofu, and crisp vegetable fritters from the self-service bar.

Verdict: A satisfying place to return to when you are craving a full table of assorted vegetables.

## Good to know

- **What we ordered**: 1 serving of barley rice, 1 serving of grilled mackerel

I tend to eat fairly simply at home, so when I eat out and get to try a little of everything, it feels as though I am making up for a week's worth of missing nutrients all at once. Boriook Main Branch (보리옥 본점), which I visited this time, was exactly that kind of place. From all kinds of seasoned vegetables to mix into barley rice, side dishes, japchae (glass noodles stir-fried with vegetables), braised tofu, vegetable fritters, and sungnyung (scorched-rice tea), there was so much food—and every single thing tasted good. I left very satisfied.

## How do you park at Boriook Main Branch?

Boriook Main Branch was easy enough to find because the building exterior has large lettering and a sign that says “barley rice specialty restaurant.” Still, it is best to know the parking situation before you visit. The dedicated lot is rather small for the size of the restaurant, which can be a little surprising on a first visit.

Even if the lot is full, though, you do not need to turn right around. There is a sign by the entrance marking additional areas where you can park. Roadside parking is permitted along the sections shown on the map, so check the parking directions once you arrive. Parking was about the only disappointment I felt at Boriook, but knowing that alternative spaces are indicated should make the visit much easier.

## A spacious, comfortable dining room

Once inside, the restaurant was much larger than I had expected from the outside. Wood-toned tables and warm lighting created a comfortable atmosphere, while the large mother-of-pearl decoration covering one wall was striking. There was also a decent amount of space between tables, so it looked like a nice choice for a family meal or for dining with your parents.

## A full meal of barley rice and grilled mackerel

We ordered one serving of barley rice and one serving of grilled mackerel, for a total of ₩28,000.

But after receiving the basic dishes and bringing back the vegetables and side dishes we wanted from the self-service bar, the table quickly became abundant.

The grilled mackerel was nicely browned outside and moist within. A vegetable bibimbap (mixed rice) can feel a little plain on its own, but adding bites of savory mackerel now and then made the whole spread feel much more complete.

## What are the self-service vegetables and side dishes like?

The self-service bar had a wide variety of seasoned vegetables for bibimbap. Each had a different texture and flavor, so even when I put several into one bowl, the taste never became monotonous.

At unlimited-refill restaurants, there are sometimes lots of choices but only a few things you actually want to go back for, right? At Boriook, the vegetables and side dishes were good across the board. I sampled small portions first, then went back for the things I liked. It is not easy to prepare so many varieties of vegetables at home all at once, so just getting to eat a balanced selection of vegetables in one meal felt wonderful.

### Warm japchae and spicy braised tofu

Another thing I liked was that foods best eaten warm were served without going cold. Japchae, braised tofu, and sungnyung—foods whose flavor depends heavily on temperature—were kept warm. At self-service bars with lots of dishes, food often cools down and loses its original appeal, but Boriook gave me the impression that it pays attention even to details like this.

The family member who came with me has a big appetite and quite picky tastes, too. They especially hardly touch cold japchae because the oiliness stands out, but that day they happily ate the warm japchae. The braised tofu also stayed with me. Korean meals centered on barley rice and seasoned vegetables can sometimes become mild and a little bland throughout. Boriook's braised tofu, unexpectedly, had a fairly strong kick of heat. Having a bite of the spicy tofu while eating the clean-tasting vegetable bibimbap woke up my appetite again. It was a side dish that balanced the flavors of the whole meal.

## The crisp vegetable fritters we kept going back for

And one item that would be a shame to leave out at Boriook is the vegetable fritters. We are not the kind of people who automatically love anything fried. People often say even a shoe tastes good fried, but if fried food tastes oily, we cannot eat much of it—just like japchae. Boriook's fritters, however, were not only beautifully crisp; the oil had drained off well, so they barely felt greasy at all.

![A plate of crisp vegetable fritters](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-boriok-crispy-vegetable-tempura/suwon-boriok-crispy-vegetable-tempura-16-1vhjq-900.webp)
*Since we are not really a fried-food household, putting only a little on a small plate at first was a mistake?? We went back for so much more. Not necessarily a bad thing, though—there were items added that had not been there earlier. Haha.*

The fritters were also made mostly with vegetables, including lotus root, kabocha squash, eggplant, chili peppers, mushrooms, and sweet potato. Since every ingredient had its own texture and sweetness, it was fun choosing them one by one. There were crisp lotus roots, sweet kabocha squash and sweet potatoes, and tender eggplant and mushrooms—a real variety. Because they were vegetable fritters, they did not feel too heavy alongside bibimbap either.

I meant to bring just one plate, but they were so crisp and not oily that I ended up making several trips to the self-service bar for more. I went for barley rice and felt as though I had unexpectedly discovered a great fritter spot. Haha.

## Gochujang bibimbap and doenjangguk barley bibimbap

We each ate our rice according to our own preference. One person made familiar bibimbap with white rice, assorted vegetables, and gochujang (Korean red chili paste); the other piled vegetables onto barley rice, added doenjangguk (soybean-paste soup), and mixed it until moist. The gochujang bibimbap had a bold, spicy flavor, while the barley bibimbap with soybean-paste soup was nutty and gentle. Even with the same vegetables, the rice and seasoning made them taste completely different.

*Barley-rice bibimbap*

I mixed in even more assorted vegetables than rice, and the crisp and soft textures came together in one bowl. The seasoning on each vegetable worked beautifully together, and it was truly delicious. At the end of the meal, we could also have warm sungnyung and dessert. After filling up on vegetables, side dishes, grilled mackerel, and vegetable fritters, finishing with warm sungnyung made me feel as though I had been properly treated to a full meal.

## A Suwon unlimited barley-rice restaurant I want to revisit

Boriook Main Branch is not a Suwon unlimited-refill barley-rice restaurant that simply boasts a high number of dishes. The vegetables and side dishes were generally delicious, and I was also pleased that foods meant to be warm were kept at the right temperature. The non-greasy, crisp vegetable fritters, spicy braised tofu, and warm japchae especially stand out in my memory.

It is worth visiting if you usually eat simply at home but want a meal with a little of everything when you go out, or if you want to enjoy Korean food comfortably with your parents. It is a shame that the lot is small for the restaurant's size, but checking the marked parking areas at the entrance in advance can reduce the inconvenience. We enjoyed everything—from the barley rice and grilled mackerel to the many vegetables, side dishes, and even dessert. My willingness to revisit is 1,000,000%; I need to come here often. ^^
