## In short

Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a Japanese restaurant on basement level 1 of Seocho Town Trapalace, a 5-minute walk from Gangnam Station in Seocho, Seoul, serving kaisendon (raw fish rice bowls), sushi and eel dishes. Sitting at the bar counter after 7pm on a weekday, the writer ordered the premium kaisendon and the aburidon (torched seafood rice bowl), and every order came with chawanmushi, cold udon and dessert. The soft, chewy abalone and the crab cream croquette from the review event were the highlights of the meal.

Lately I've been craving a kaisendon (assorted raw fish rice bowl) piled high with fresh sashimi, so I headed to Gangnam Station. This time I visited Ilpum Gangnam Branch, a place where you can enjoy a generous bowl of all kinds of seafood at once! From a Gangnam kaisendon where you can taste fresh sashimi of every variety, to sushi and eel dishes, the menu is varied — a great pick when you're looking for a sushi restaurant near Gangnam Station.

The kaisendon in particular comes loaded with several kinds of sashimi and seafood, so it feels like a proper full meal — I wanted to recommend it to anyone searching for a good kaisendon spot. It's also worth remembering if you're on the hunt for Gangnam sushi or an eel restaurant near Gangnam Station, so I'm sharing my visit here!

## A basement level 1 restaurant near Gangnam Station that only regulars seem to find

Ilpum Gangnam Branch is only about a 3-minute walk from Gangnam Station, so it's super close. But because it's on the basement level, it has the feel of a place only insiders know about.

Tucked into the basement shopping arcade, it's a quiet, atmospheric spot that feels like it's mostly frequented by office workers from the area.

The exterior is clean and has a nice atmosphere. With waiting seats available, you know it's a proven favorite.

Even though I visited on a weekday after 7pm, the place was so popular that every seat was already full!

### Bar counter or 4-person table at Ilpum: seating for solo diners

I saw couples on dates as well as plenty of office workers eating solo after work. There's a bar counter as well as 4-person tables further inside. But since watching the cooking is fun, we sat at the bar counter.

The seating was set up like this, with the basic tableware laid out without a speck of dust — it felt pleasant the whole time we were there.

## QR code ordering at Ilpum: what is on the menu?

Ordering at Ilpum Gangnam Branch is done via QR code. These days this kind of ordering system is more common, and it actually makes it easier to look closely at the photos, so it felt convenient.

![QR code ordering instructions](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-07-m7p8m-900.webp)

There was also a paper menu, which was nice to flip through when we had a spare moment. There were plenty of sake options too, plus beer and highballs, which seemed perfect for pairing with sashimi in the evening.

The signature dish is the kaisendon. They also serve sashimi and sushi, chicken nanban rice bowls, and individual sushi pieces — a wide range of Japanese dishes that made choosing fun. We ordered ✔️the premium kaisendon and ✔️the aburidon (torched seafood rice bowl).

![Water dispenser placed at each table](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-11-147n6-900.webp)

One thing I found interesting was that there was a water dispenser at every seat, which made pouring water much easier. It also somehow made everything feel cleaner, which I liked.

![Chawanmushi steamed egg custard and baek-kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-12-1aafx-900.webp)

## The meal starts with chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and baek-kimchi

As soon as we sat down, they very quickly brought out chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi). It was served just warm enough — a perfect way to start before the main meal.

The chawanmushi was truly silky and had deep umami flavor. It might be the best chawanmushi I've had recently — genuinely high-quality. There was even shrimp inside, so it was quite filling too.

## Premium kaisendon at Ilpum: the abalone texture was a surprise

Finally, the premium kaisendon arrived. True to its 'premium' name, it came piled high with high-end varieties. Sweet shrimp, tuna, sea bream, scallop, salmon, uni (sea urchin), salmon roe, and more — if you're the type who wants to try a bite of everything, I'd recommend this dish.

![Close-up of premium kaisendon showing sweet shrimp and uni](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-14-16yyl-900.webp)

![A piece of aged sashimi lifted with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-15-1jyp6-900.webp)

The freshness of the sashimi went without saying, and it was well-aged too, so it was incredibly soft and chewy to eat. Whether they're using higher-grade fish or not, the sashimi itself was such high quality that each piece had just the right amount of richness. The most shocking part was the abalone! It had a totally different texture from any abalone I'd had before. When I've eaten raw abalone before it's always had a crunchy bite, but here it was incredibly soft and chewy — a truly different, more refined flavor.

They also gave us plenty of seaweed, so wrapping the rice and sashimi together in it made a great combination.

## Aburidon at Ilpum: torched salmon was the best bite

Next was the aburidon we ordered. This is a dish where the sashimi is lightly torched. It's loaded with salmon, sea bream, squid, egg, scallop, salmon roe, and more. I ordered it because I wanted both raw sashimi and something warm, and it turned out to be a great choice.

The light torching brought out even more richness and made the texture softer — it was a choice with zero regrets. The salmon especially was really, really delicious.

The sea bream was also lightly seared, giving it a softer texture and bringing out its distinctive aroma and flavor even more. This one also paired really well when eaten wrapped in seaweed.

## Chawanmushi, udon and dessert with every order, plus the review-event crab croquette

At Ilpum Gangnam Branch, chawanmushi, udon, and dessert are included with every order. Since it was summer season, we got fried chicken with cold udon! The noodles in the cold udon were chewy, making it a nice special treat.

As part of a review event, we were given a crab cream croquette. I didn't expect much, but it was so high quality and delicious that I'd definitely recommend joining the event to get one.

The crab and cream flavors were rich and nutty — the kind of taste I'd happily pay for next time.

This is the dessert that came after the meal. It's a cute, small portion, but since we were already quite full from the meal, it was the perfect amount as a palate cleanser.

![Milk pudding dessert topped with mango purée](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon/gangnam-ipum-tokukaisendon-aburidon-24-dj1v1-900.webp)

On top was what looked like a mango purée or mango jam, with something like a milk pudding underneath. It had exactly the texture of pudding — soft and jiggly, which I loved.

On the way out, I noticed celebrity autographs on the wall. From Lee Young-ja to other well-known names, there were so many signatures — proof that this is a real go-to restaurant!

## Is Ilpum Gangnam Branch worth a weeknight dinner?

Ilpum Gangnam Branch delivers fresh sashimi and generous portions, leaving you feeling like you had a proper, satisfying meal. The premium kaisendon was great because it let us taste a variety of seafood at once — sweet shrimp, tuna, sea bream, scallop, uni, and more — and the lightly torched aburidon was soft and savory, truly delicious.

Having chawanmushi, udon, and dessert included as well made the whole meal much more filling than expected — another highlight. It's a great place to visit whether you're searching for a sushi restaurant or kaisendon spot near Gangnam Station, or craving other Japanese dishes like Gangnam sushi or eel near Gangnam Station. If you want a high-quality Gangnam kaisendon near Gangnam Station, I'd recommend Ilpum Gangnam Branch.
