## In short

Boriook Main Branch is a barley rice (bori-bap) restaurant behind Mangpo Fantasium in Yeongtong, Suwon. Arriving with her mom on a weekday after 1pm, the writer walked straight in with no wait and paid 30,000 won in total for a barley rice set at 13,000 won, a mackerel set at 15,000 won and a cola, piling on namul (seasoned vegetables) from the self-serve bar. With high chairs and a 5,000 won menu for ages 6 to 12, Boriook Main Branch works just as well for a family meal.

Hi everyone^^ This is Wonye. This time I went to Mangpo for a lunch date with my mom. I've always liked Korean food where you pick a little of this and that — namul, barley rice — so while searching for a good hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) place in Suwon, I found Boriook. It's located behind Fantasium, so it wasn't hard to find, and there's parking right in front of the restaurant, which made it look like a good spot for families too.

## Boriook, a barley rice specialist behind Mangpo Fantasium

This is Boriook, a barley rice specialty restaurant behind Fantasium in Yeongtong. I came for lunch this time, partly as a date with my mom. There's parking right in front, so it looked convenient for anyone driving, but we came by public transportation this time.

If you're looking for somewhere to eat with your parents near Mangpo Station, or you tend to prefer namul and Korean food over heavier flavors, this kind of barley rice set would suit you well.

## Arriving after 1pm on a weekday: was there a wait?

![Front view of the entrance at Boriook Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-03-w6ec6-900.webp)

We parked and went straight in. Boriook apparently gets busy enough at lunchtime or on weekends to have a wait, but since we came after 1pm on a weekday, we got seated right away with no wait at all.

Timing your visit just after the lunch peak seems to make for a more relaxed meal.

## High chairs at Boriook, so kids can come along

Right by the entrance, on the right, there were quite a lot of high chairs ready. There seemed to be a lot of families with kids too, and since the menu itself is mild, everyday Korean food, it felt like a good match for family dining. There's a separate kids' menu (with pricing), and ages 6 to 12 pay just ₩5,000, which is handy to know if you're coming with children. :)

## Inside Boriook: a big, airy Korean restaurant in Mangpo

![Spacious, comfortable interior hall at Boriook Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-04-1m792-900.webp)

The interior was bigger than I expected and had a comfortable overall feel. The spacing between tables was fairly generous too, so it never felt cramped against the next table.

We took a seat on the right side of the hall, and it felt like a nice atmosphere to chat and eat slowly with my mom.

## Boriook's menu and prices, ordered by tablet

![Tablet ordering screen on the table at Boriook](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-07-1n5j8-640.webp)

You check the menu and order via the tablet at the table. There's the basic barley rice set, plus set meals with mackerel, pork and more.

We ordered one barley rice set and one mackerel set. They told us the mackerel set comes with half a mackerel per serving, so we went with mackerel for one of them.

- Barley rice set: ₩13,000
- Mackerel set: ₩15,000
- Cola: ₩2,000
- Total: ₩30,000

## The self-serve side dish bar at Boriook Main Branch

![Overview of the namul self-serve bar at Boriook](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-10-1bop2-900.webp)

![A variety of namul laid out at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-11-tkv94-900.webp)

![Self-serve bar corner with jelly and fritters](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-12-1ss37-900.webp)

![Side dish display at the Boriook self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-13-qgt72-900.webp)

After ordering, we went over to the self-serve bar. There were all kinds of namul plus mukand fritters, and honestly, just looking at it all, I couldn't decide what to pick first.

I've always liked namul, so I figured tasting a bit of everything and mixing it into the barley rice would be great. It's a style that really suits people who'd rather sample lots of small things than eat just one side dish.

![Two very differently sized plates of namul](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-14-199bn-900.webp)

But once we'd loaded our plates, the portion difference was huge haha. I've been trying to eat smaller amounts lately, so I only took what I really wanted, but my mom, as always, came back with a mountain.

My mom said you could honestly just eat the namul mixed together without rice haha. This kind of setup clearly appeals most to people who love a variety of namul and Korean food.

If you come with someone like my mom who enjoys nibbling a little of many side dishes, the self-serve bar gets even more fun.

![Corner with spicy braised tofu, soy rice cakes and sungnyung](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-15-1rxge-900.webp)

Next to the self-serve bar there was also spicy braised tofu, soy-braised rice cakes, and sungnyung (scorched rice tea). There were more side dish varieties than I expected, so it was fun to make a full loop around.

I was curious about the braised tofu, so I grabbed some. It was nice that it wasn't just barley rice and namul — you could mix in other side dishes along the way too.

![Post-meal coffee and rice puff dessert corner](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-16-1qtss-900.webp)

After the meal, there's also a simple dessert corner. Coffee and rice puffs are set out, so you can finish off with a light dessert right there without needing to find a separate café.

We'd eaten so much that we had no room left for dessert that day haha. Next time I'll try to come a bit less full and actually try the dessert corner.

## Mixing Boriook's barley rice and namul the way you like it

![Wide bowl and soup bowl set out for mixing barley rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-17-1ify1-1200.webp)

Once we brought our namul back from the self-serve bar, the table already had a soup bowl and a wide bowl set out for mixing the barley rice.

Sesame oil and gochujang (red chili paste) were set on the table as standard, so you just add as much as you like and mix. If you love namul, it's fun to take a little of each kind and blend the flavors together.

We're the type to pile on a lot of namul, so we loaded up a full bowl — and looking at it, it really did become a proper bowl of barley rice.

![Basic doenjang jjigae served bubbling in a stone pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-18-m7uts-900.webp)

A basic doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) also comes standard. It arrived bubbling in a stone pot, sending up warm steam as soon as it hit the table.

It had a slightly cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste)-like, savory character compared to a typical doenjang jjigae — good on its own with rice, but also nice mixed a little into the barley rice.

![A bowl of barley rice mixed generously with namul](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-19-s7djt-900.webp)

I properly mixed a big pile of namul into the barley rice. You could feel the textures of several different vegetables all at once, and with gochujang and sesame oil added, it turned savory and nutty.

If you generally like Korean food or enjoy sampling a bit of many side dishes, this kind of barley rice set would be quite satisfying. I especially love namul, so just looking at this mixed bowl already felt filling.

![Half a grilled mackerel served with the mackerel set](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-20-1q3pt-966.webp)

![A plate of nicely grilled mackerel](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-21-1olo5-900.webp)

![A bite of mackerel eaten together with barley rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-22-cy433-900.webp)

I also tried the half mackerel from the mackerel set. The nicely grilled mackerel paired really well with the barley rice.

The mackerel itself was mild and nutty, and it matched well with the namul bibimbap in terms of seasoning. Adding a bite of mackerel here and there made the whole meal feel even more filling than eating namul alone.

## A lunch date with mom, and a family visit next time

![Table at Boriook after finishing the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-23-1hn0f-900.webp)

![Closing view of the interior at Boriook Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch/boriok-mangpo-barley-rice-late-lunch-24-lwdcy-900.webp)

By the time we finished eating we were pretty full, so we never got to try the dessert corner haha. Next time I'd like to come with a bit more room to spare and enjoy the meal along with the coffee and snacks.

This time it was just my mom and me, but after eating I thought it would be perfectly fine to bring the kids and the whole family too. With high chairs ready and a mostly Korean-food menu, it seems like a good option to keep in mind when looking for a family dining spot.

If you're looking for a good Korean restaurant near Mangpo Station to eat with your parents, or a buffet-style spot near Mangpo Station where you can eat all the namul you want, Boriook is worth putting on the list.

## What worked and what didn't at Boriook Main Branch

👍 What I liked — Being able to pick a variety of namul and side dishes from the self-serve bar to your taste, and filling up on a hearty meal with barley rice. The space is spacious and high chairs are available, so it looked good for a parents' meal or a family outing too.

👀 What I didn't — There can be a wait on weekends or during lunch hours, so it's better to visit at a less busy time. Also, I was too full to properly enjoy the dessert corner after the meal, which was a bit of a shame.

> If you love namul, don't pile on too much of one kind at first — take small portions of each, then mix the barley rice with gochujang and sesame oil to your taste.

It was a Boriook visit where I had a long-overdue lunch date with my mom and ate my fill of namul, which I love. Next time I'll bring the kids and try the kids' menu, and enjoy the dessert corner I missed out on this time, without rushing. Keep this in mind if you're in Yeongtong or near Mangpo Station in Suwon and want a filling, no-fuss Korean meal :)
