Honestly, at first I thought it would just be an ordinary barley rice restaurant, but as soon as I took a bite I kept saying "this is good" without even meaning to haha 😂 There were way more banchan than I expected, and you could take as much as you wanted, so if you like Korean food this place could be pretty satisfying. The table came set with barley rice, a soup bowl and plates, and the grilled mackerel and soup were brought out separately. What I liked most about Boriook was, unsurprisingly, the banchan. Assorted fritters, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), braised tofu, dried eggplant stir-fry, oyster mushroom stir-fry, dried radish greens stir-fry, bok choy stir-fry, seasoned bean sprouts, seaweed stem salad, balloon flower root stir-fry, yeolmu kimchi, spicy radish salad, and fresh cabbage kimchi — being able to eat this many different banchan at once was great. At home, preparing this many banchan takes a lot of effort, but here you just take a little of whatever you want, which was really convenient. I could see why so many people come here looking for all-you-can-eat barley rice in Suwon. ## 🐟 Why the grilled mackerel set is worth adding The grilled mackerel we ordered exceeded expectations too. The outside was grilled to a nice golden brown while the inside stayed moist, which went perfectly with rice. Putting the mackerel flesh on a cabbage wrap with a bit of banchan was especially delicious. Just the grilled mackerel alone could easily finish off a whole bowl of rice! And eating it together with the various banchan meant it was much less repetitive than eating just one dish the whole time, and stayed delicious to the last bite. I piled a little of several banchan onto my barley rice, then tried mixing in gochujang (Korean chili paste) and sesame oil. I don't usually love bibimbap, but the combination of gochujang and sesame oil here was so good that I ended up mixing another bowl haha 😂 The banchan weren't overly seasoned, which made them pair even better with rice. The noodles weren't overly soft — they had a nice bouncy texture, just like japchae at a proper Korean restaurant. The assorted fritters included sweet pumpkin and sweet potato, so they were crispy and good to eat. The doenjang (soybean paste) soup wasn't a heavy cheonggukjang style, but rather clean and savory. Overall, none of the banchan felt overly salty or heavy on seasoning, so it was food you could keep eating comfortably. It was just a place I'd walked past a few times and tagged along to because a coworker suggested it, but once the food came out and I tried each banchan, without realizing it I kept saying > "This is good." "This is good too." "There are so many banchan." over and over haha 😂 Especially with the grilled mackerel and various banchan together, it felt like a proper, satisfying meal. The table spacing wasn't cramped, so it worked well for a meal with coworkers, and it also seemed fine for a family visit. There were baby chairs available, and mother-of-pearl decorations on one side of the restaurant gave it a slightly warm, traditional Korean restaurant feel. In conclusion, I'd definitely go back. The grilled mackerel was delicious, and more than anything I loved being able to eat as much of the various banchan as I wanted. If you'd rather eat a variety of Korean side dishes than fill up on just one dish, this place should be pretty satisfying. Especially on days when it's too much of a hassle to prepare multiple banchan at home, or when I want a hearty meal, I think I'll come back here too.
