These days, some days I'd rather have a proper meal of rice and banchan than anything too spicy or heavy. This time, wanting a filling but clean meal with family, I went to Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang, known as a Korean set-meal restaurant in Bucheon.

With the mountain nearby, the whole walk to the restaurant already felt relaxed, and it gave the feeling of getting away from a busy downtown for a meal.

You go into a Korean set-meal restaurant expecting a table packed with side dishes, and here too the table filled up fast once everything arrived. What I liked most was being able to try a little of many different banchan.

They say they use fresh, seasonal ingredients to prepare 12 neatly arranged banchan every day, and in practice it wasn't a style where one dish dominates — there was enough variety that it was fun to try each one. While waiting for the rice, I worked through the banchan one by one, and the overall clean presentation made it feel comfortable, almost like home cooking.

### Cheonggukjang and stone pot rice at Gim Myeongju

And of course, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), a must-have in a Korean set meal, also came out. The savory, nutty aroma rising from it went so well with rice that pairing it with the banchan naturally made me want a second bowl. I especially loved that stone pot rice came with the meal — freshly cooked in the stone pot, the grains were warm and fluffy, and topping them with banchan one by one reminded me that rice really is the heart of Korean food.

## Is the Norwegian grilled mackerel add-on worth it?

And now, the grilled mackerel we added on top! They say they use Norwegian mackerel, and it came out carefully grilled into bite-sized pieces. I started with the golden-brown skin, which had a lovely nutty flavor, and the flesh was clean-tasting but moist, pairing really well with rice. Since it's salted mackerel, it already had enough seasoning that I didn't need to add much extra sauce to enjoy it.

Grilled fish is also a relatively easy dish to share when eating out with a child, so I was glad we added the mackerel. With the mackerel on top of the set meal, the table got really generous, making it a great fit for a group meal too. Bite of banchan, spoonful of stone pot rice, then flaking off some mackerel to put on the rice in between — I kept reaching back for more.

## A la carte dishes to try next at Gim Myeongju

Besides grilled mackerel, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang also sells a range of single dishes — grilled dried barley croaker, soy crab, charcoal-grilled pork, seasoned cockles, and more — so I'd like to try other menu items next time. I was especially curious about the barley croaker, made with Yeonggwang dried croaker naturally dried in the sea breeze at Beopseongpo, and the soy crab, made with Jeju yellow crab aged in a secret soy sauce. Charcoal-grilled pork and seasoned cockles also seemed like they'd go well with rice, so I'm planning to order them one by one on my next visit.

With three set meals plus the mackerel add-on, this was a truly filling meal. Eating out these days, food can taste great but leave you feeling like it was a bit much afterward — but this time, with all the banchan, the cheonggukjang, and the warm stone pot rice, it felt like I'd properly taken care of a meal.

When looking for a place to eat comfortably with family, the menu matters, but so does whether the food comes out clean and well-presented — and this place held up well on that front too. If you're looking for a Korean set-meal restaurant near the Wonmisan restaurant strip, it's worth trying the stone pot rice, cheonggukjang, and the range of banchan at Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang. Adding grilled mackerel to the set meal, like we did, makes the table even more generous, and it worked well as a family meal out.

Next time, I'd like to come back and add a different single dish for another filling Korean meal :)
