## In short

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is a beef noodle and dim sum restaurant at the start of the food alley behind Exit 11 of Gangnam Station in Seoul. Chefs fold dumplings behind a full street-facing window, and a meal here of beef dosakmyeon (knife-cut beef noodle soup) at 11,000 won plus sujeongdal crystal dumplings and shumai at 9,800 won each came with a broth kept clean and light by pickled mustard leaf. One bowl of beef noodles with one dumpling order makes a simple full meal for about 20,000 won.

## Where is Namsogwan? The food alley behind Gangnam Station Exit 11

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is right at the start of the alley you hit if you go up the street behind Gangnam Station's Exit 11. Through the big street-facing window you can see the chefs hand-folding dumplings themselves, which honestly startled me hahahaha. Such an exotic-feeling spot to find smack in the middle of Gangnam Station.

![Exterior of Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon with dumplings being made behind the window](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan-01-1clms-900.webp)

From outside you can see two chef gentlemen kneading dough and shaping dumpling balls right by the entrance. Instantly makes you curious.

Making them in such an openly visible space feels reassuring, hygiene-wise. A total show-it-off kind of performance.

The interior has this vibe like something out of Mr. Sunshine. There aren't many seats on the 1st floor (mostly kitchen and dim sum prep space), but there's a roomier space upstairs on the 2nd floor.

## Beef noodles for 11,000 won: what are knife-cut dosakmyeon noodles?

The main dish at Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon, the beef noodles, cost 11,000 won. There's regular beef noodles, Sichuan-style beef dosakmyeon, and yupo dosakmyeon. As standard sides you get something like pickled cabbage similar to zha cai, peanuts, a small plate, and water.

What is dosakmyeon...? Seems like noodles cut with a knife, kind of like kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), but for the details you should probably ask ChatGPT...

Such a great interior. Genuinely feels like a trip to somewhere Chinese. I have this memory of eating REALLY delicious beef noodles when I traveled to Taiwan, so I was very much looking forward to this.

### The broth and pickled mustard leaf in Namsogwan's beef knife-cut noodles

The main beef dosakmyeon. Piled generously with beef topping and a rich-looking broth — beef noodles with protein guaranteed. Piping hot. The broth looks really thick and deep.

The first time I had beef noodles in Taiwan, I remember they gave you something like pickled mustard leaf as a side, kind of like how we get kimchi here — but here it seems like the pickled mustard leaf is mixed right into the broth.

The pickled mustard leaf inside the broth. There's no funky smell at all in the broth, it's very clean and delicious. There were a lot of foreign customers too, seemed like a lot of them were Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and mainland Chinese folks.

The meat is SUPER tender. That melts-on-your-tongue kind of feel. There were about five or six pieces of this beef topping in there.

## Sujeongdal crystal dumplings and shumai, 9,800 won each

Next up, the sujeongdal dumplings I ordered. Dumplings at Namsogwan are 9,800 won. There's sujeongdal mandu, xiaolongbao, hagyo, and shumai — I ordered the sujeongdal mandu and the shumai.

The dumpling skin is super moist, chewy and sticky, kind of like potato rice cake. Careful, they'll stick together and won't come apart.

Beef noodles and sujeongdal mandu. The passion for a good thumbnail shot, haha.

![Table spread with beef noodles and sujeongdal dumplings](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan-13-1dkdj-900.webp)

![A full spread of beef dosakmyeon and dim sum](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan-14-13y4n-900.webp)

A dim sum spot worth knowing at Gangnam Station. The skin is completely sticky and chewy. Wonder if there's potato starch in it. A strange, delicious, fun kind of texture.

![Picking up a sujeongdal dumpling with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan-15-1wxhg-900.webp)

![Dosakmyeon noodle strands of varying thickness](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan/gangnam-station-beef-noodle-shumai-namsogwan-16-1egi9-900.webp)

### Thick, roughly shaved noodle strands

Since it's dosakmyeon, the noodles aren't uniform in size — they're roughly cut, all different. The variety in the noodles makes for a great texture. Soft parts, firm or chewy parts — that's the charm of dosakmyeon.

### Shumai topped with flying fish roe

This is the dumpling called shumai. It's made with something like fish paste inside, topped with flying fish roe. The inside has a fish-cake-like texture and the roe on top gives it a nice bite.

Plenty of flying fish roe too, which was great haha. When it came out I noticed it looked like they'd placed the roe on top by hand;;;;

The sujeongdal mandu has a whole shrimp inside (a baby shrimp). So there's a nice burst of shrimp texture, and it's really delicious. Definitely recommend trying at least one dumpling.

Since I have such a good memory of the beef noodles I ate in Taiwan, and no aversion to beef noodles at all, this was really tasty hahahahaha.

Dumplings marked by a chewy, potato-like skin and a hearty filling. The beef noodle broth is delicious and the noodle strands are unique (that distinctive dosakmyeon texture).

## Wrap-up: what to order at Namsogwan and what it costs

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is a good place near Gangnam Station to try beef noodles alongside a variety of dumplings. The beef noodles are in the low 11,000-won range, and dumplings are under 10,000 won, so ordering one dumpling as a side with your noodles makes for a great simple meal (would also pair well with a beer).

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon, a great beef noodle spot near Gangnam Station — ate well, thanks!
