## In short

Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch is a Korean restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, serving a fried jokbal set and cold buckwheat noodles between Jonggak and Jongno 3-ga stations. I enjoyed its clean, same-day-boiled jokbal, crisp coating, and plentiful side-dish combinations. Verdict: a great stop when you want to try crispy fried jokbal in lots of different ways.

Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch (연남족발1987 종각점) is located between Jonggak Station and Jongno 3-ga Station. It was easy to get to, and makes for a lovely route: walk from Dongdaemun along Cheonggyecheon, have dinner, then continue on to Ikseon-dong Hanok Village for a stroll.

## What would fried jokbal taste like?

What sets Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch apart from other jokbal restaurants is that it sells fried jokbal (braised pig’s trotter)!!! Regular jokbal is delicious already, so I was SO curious—what on earth would it taste like fried?

We arrived at around 5:30 p.m. on a weekday, and by about 6:30, after office workers got off work at 6, it was bustling with diners! The square wood-tone tables were comfortable for eating, and the high backs gave a slightly partitioned feel, offering some privacy with your companions. It was a great atmosphere for chatting over a meal!

There is also a long connected table where 8 to 10 people can sit together, so Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch is great for group work dinners too!

The interior is pretty too, so it is perfect for a date course?!

The reason we came to Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch: to eat fried jokbal, where delicious jokbal is made even more delicious by frying it, haha.

Every table had paper cups, disposable wooden chopsticks, wet wipes, and tissues, and the tables and chairs were all kept clean.

## Ordering the fried jokbal set and cold buckwheat noodles

- Fried jokbal set
- Cold buckwheat noodles

We ordered the fried jokbal set together with cold buckwheat noodles, an essential side dish we simply could not skip!

These are the side dishes that come with the set. You can see at a glance how many kinds there are, right? And that round tray spins like one at a Chinese restaurant, so it was really convenient—we could just rotate it rather than reaching all the way across the table!

From wrap vegetables and salad to dried radish strips, pickled chili peppers, and gat kimchi (mustard-leaf kimchi), there were plenty of sides that pair well with jokbal, plus ssamjang (savory soybean dipping paste), garlic sauce, and even refreshing bean sprout soup 👍🏻

True to its name, Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch’s fried jokbal set arrived as one seriously generous table spread!!

## Moist jokbal beneath a crisp fried coating

Yeonnam Jokbal uses only jokbal boiled that day, so I think even people sensitive to meaty odors could enjoy it easily. I am sensitive to that smell too, but it was clean and easy to eat with no unpleasantness at all.

Since it is fried jokbal, you cannot leave out cold soda and beer, right?! If you are looking for a place that works as both a restaurant and a nice first stop for drinks, Yeonnam Jokbal 1987 Jonggak Branch 😆

![Fried jokbal served with soda and beer](https://img.superchart.com/images/euljiro-fried-jokbal-meal/euljiro-fried-jokbal-meal-18-icde4-966.webp)

The fried jokbal was drizzled with seasoned fried-chicken sauce too, so it had a little bit of a supreme chicken feel. It looked every bit like a signature dish—my mouth was watering.

Yeonnam Jokbal was wonderful for its moist meat, chewy skin, and crisp fried coating wrapped around it all! The crunchy handmade batter went so deliciously with the soft, bouncy texture of the jokbal inside.

I tried it with just the drizzled seasoned chicken sauce, then wrapped it up with vegetables, garlic, and ssamjang as you would regular jokbal, and also added dried radish strips and gat kimchi! There were so many side dishes and sauces that trying all sorts of combinations was really good too!

Along with boneless meat, it included a good variety of cuts: large bones, small soft cartilage, mini trotters, and claws!!! There is fun in picking it up and gnawing on it too!!

## Cold buckwheat noodles for a refreshing finish

Cold buckwheat noodles, the ultimate can’t-miss side dish!!! They were generously topped with baby greens, lettuce, and shredded seaweed, making them great alongside the meal as a refreshing palate cleanser.

Should I call it something like a brothy bibim noodles dish? It came with bibim sauce too, so it was spicy and cool—a perfect match for the jokbal! The portion was generous as well, so it was great to order as a side and share among several people.
