## In short

Simya Kkochi is a traditional Chinese restaurant and bar in Samsan-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan, open from 5pm to 5am. On a second-round visit after eating meat first, the writer ordered a small guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) and mapo tofu instead of lamb skewers, and found the small portion generous and the mapo tofu mild with a subtle mala aroma. With private rooms and free parking out front, it's a solid pick for a late drink or gathering in Samsan.

We'd already had dinner in Samsan and wanted a different kind of side dish for round two, so we headed to Simya Kkochi (심야 꼬치). Going by the name alone I figured it'd be mostly lamb skewers, but the menu turned out to have a much wider range of Chinese dishes than I expected.

Along with lamb skewers and lamb ribs, there were plenty of other Chinese dishes, so it was easy to pick something light even though we'd already had meat in round one. If you're looking for dinner in Samsan-dong, Ulsan and want somewhere you can eat and drink late into the night, this place is worth keeping in mind. I also liked that it's open from 5pm to 5am, so there's no need to rush.

### Interior vibe and rooms

The interior was clean and the seating fairly spacious. There were private rooms too, which seemed good for a bigger group — company dinners or gatherings would work well here. Since we'd already had meat in round one, we skipped the lamb skewers and ribs for next time and ordered guobaorou (small) and mapo tofu instead.

## Side dishes

The side dishes came out one by one — egg soup, fried peanuts, pickled mountain peppers, kimchi, pickled onion, and zha cai, quite a variety. It was a nice lineup for nibbling on while having a drink.

## Guobaorou (small) — a surprisingly generous portion for a small size

> Guobaorou (small)

We started with the guobaorou (small), and even at the small size the portion was bigger than expected. The batter was crispy, so the texture was great from the very first bite.

I liked that the sauce wasn't too sweet or overpowering. The sweet-and-sour seasoning was nicely balanced and would pair really well with beer. Kitchen scissors came with it, but the pieces were small enough to eat as they were, so we just picked them up one by one. Crispy batter plus that sauce — perfect for a second-round side dish~

The portion was generous enough for the two of us to take our time over drinks, and even after we were fairly full, we kept reaching for more.

## Mapo tofu — not too salty, with a subtle mala aroma

> Mapo tofu

For some reason, mapo tofu always sounds tempting whenever I'm at a lamb skewer place~?? We ordered it again this time, and I liked that the seasoning here wasn't too strong.

![A bowl of Simya Kkochi's mapo tofu](https://img.superchart.com/images/simya-kkochi-ulsan-samsan-chinese/simya-kkochi-ulsan-samsan-chinese-11-vklh1-966.webp)

It wasn't the kind of dish that hits you with a wave of salt or spice — the seasoning was just right, easy to eat, and there was a subtle mala aroma running through it. I liked that the mala flavor didn't overpower the dish but instead added a gentle depth. The tofu was soft and blended well with the sauce, so one bite led to another.

I liked how subtle the mala aroma was. If you're expecting an intense mala flavor it might feel different, but this easygoing version actually worked really well as a drinking dish.

## More choices than just lamb skewers

If you're looking into dinner options in Samsan-dong, Ulsan, you don't need to come to Simya Kkochi thinking only of lamb skewers. Looking at the menu, there were more choices than I expected, so you can order according to what you feel like eating that day.

![Traditional Chinese menu with many options](https://img.superchart.com/images/simya-kkochi-ulsan-samsan-chinese/simya-kkochi-ulsan-samsan-chinese-14-kz336-966.webp)

You get to try a variety of traditional Chinese dishes here — handy for people like us who'd already had meat in round one and weren't up for more lamb, since there are plenty of other things to order.

We didn't get to try the lamb this time, but next time I want to come with more room in my stomach and properly try the lamb skewers. True to the name, there's a wide range of skewer options too, so I'm planning to pick a lamb dish on my next visit. The guobaorou was generous and crispy, so it was a pretty satisfying pick for round two. The two of us ordered two dishes and the portions were bigger than expected, so we could take our time eating.

Next time I'll have to try other traditional Chinese dishes along with the lamb skewers. The portions were generous and there was plenty of menu variety, so it was a good spot to drop into casually for round two. Simya Kkochi, open until late.
