## In short

The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch is a baumkuchen dessert café on Jahamun-ro, near Exit 2 of Gyeongbokgung Station in Jongno, Seoul. After walking through Gyeongbokgung Palace, I stopped by with friends for a custard baum, a choco Eifel baum, a fondant chocolate baum and an Americano, seated under a ceiling that echoes hanok rafters across the café's two floors. The Baum suits a Seoul day trip when you want an unusual dessert instead of the usual slice of cake.

When you're out sightseeing in Seoul at a place with as much to see as Gyeongbokgung Palace, you eventually need a café to rest in. After walking around the palace area with friends, we looked for a dessert café near Gyeongbokgung Station to recharge with something sweet. That's how we ended up at The Baum, a café specializing in baumkuchen. It's close to Gyeongbokgung Station and lets you try all kinds of baumkuchen, an unusual dessert you don't run into every day, which made it a nice stop on our Seoul outing.

## Where is The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch, and how far is it from Gyeongbokgung Station?

The Baum is a café in Jongno-gu, Seoul. It's near Exit 2 of Gyeongbokgung Station, so it's easy to find from the subway, and it's also a convenient stop if you're heading toward Seochon after touring Gyeongbokgung Palace.

If location matters to you when picking a dessert café near Gyeongbokgung Station, the easy route to get here will be the biggest draw.

## Inside The Baum's two floors and its hanok rafter ceiling

Walking in off the busy street, opening the door greeted me with a calm feeling completely different from outside. The ceiling in particular, styled to evoke hanok rafters, stood out.

Even though it's a café right in the middle of Seoul, it had a quiet, old-town feel that suited carrying on the mood from our Gyeongbokgung visit.

The Baum has a 1st floor and a 2nd floor. The space turned out roomier than I expected, so it looked fine for a group visit too.

Having a clean restroom inside the store was also convenient. After a long walk around Gyeongbokgung, sitting down to order a drink and dessert and just resting for a while felt especially welcome.

What I found fun, unlike a typical café, was seeing all kinds of baumkuchen displayed around the store.

![Various kinds of baumkuchen displayed in the store](https://img.superchart.com/images/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum-05-1jkp1-900.webp)

Looking through the menu one by one naturally got us talking with each other about which kind to pick.

## What kind of dessert is baumkuchen?

![Baumkuchen on display showing rings like tree growth rings](https://img.superchart.com/images/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum-06-1ymj0-900.webp)

Baumkuchen is a traditional German cake with layered rings that look like tree growth rings.

Its texture and shape are a bit different from the cakes we're used to, so it's worth trying once as a novel dessert.

It's known as a popular dessert in Japan too, and at The Baum you can try not just the basic baumkuchen but versions made with various ingredients.

There's also an ice baumkuchen you enjoy cold, so you can pick according to your taste.

There's also a good variety of drinks to pair with dessert.

## Custard baum, choco Eifel baum, fondant chocolate baum and an Americano

To try several kinds of baumkuchen together, we ordered the custard baum, choco Eifel baum, fondant chocolate baum, and an Americano.

![A cup of The Baum's low-acidity Americano](https://img.superchart.com/images/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum-13-6az81-900.webp)

The Americano wasn't very acidic, with a dark, rich flavor. Eating it alongside the sweet baumkuchen, the coffee's bitterness seemed to balance out the dessert's sweetness nicely.

### Custard baum at The Baum

The custard baum has a sugar coating on top, giving it a fun crackling texture like crème brûlée.

Inside, custard cream gave it a soft, sweet flavor.

### Choco Eifel baum at The Baum

The choco Eifel baum is a relatively harder-type baumkuchen. Honestly, its shape reminded me of the ridgeline of nearby Bukaksan mountain, haha.

It was nice being able to see the distinctive layers of an authentic German baumkuchen while eating it, and the texture, quite different from a soft cake, made an impression.

### Fondant chocolate baum at The Baum

The fondant chocolate baum is a cake-type menu item combining rich fresh cream flavor with chocolate cream cheese. The baumkuchen on the outside is soft, while the chocolate cream cheese inside is thick and dense — a real sugar-recharge kind of flavor.

If you like chocolate-based desserts, this would suit your taste well. If you're trying baumkuchen for the first time, I'd recommend starting with a more basic option like the regular baum.

![Table with several kinds of baumkuchen laid out](https://img.superchart.com/images/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum/thebaum-gyeongbokgung-fondant-chocolat-baum-22-z836s-900.webp)

If you've already had baumkuchen before, it's also worth ordering something with more variation, like the custard, chocolate, or watermelon-flavored baumkuchen.

## Does The Baum sell Chuseok gift sets?

The Baum isn't just for enjoying dessert in the café — it's also a good place to check out gift products. When I visited, ahead of the Chuseok holiday, gift sets were also ready.

If you're looking for something a little different from the usual holiday gift, a baumkuchen gift set looked like a good option.

It also seemed like a good dessert for tea time after a meal with a group, or as an unusual gift for someone close to you.
