This is Shushubi. A famous Korean restaurant in Icheon known for charcoal galbi (grilled ribs) — Neul Gogi Jip. On the way back from the Icheon festival this weekend, I stopped for a good meal at this well-known Icheon restaurant. Here's my honest review.

## Parking and first impressions at Neul Gogi Jip Icheon Main Branch

Neul Gogi Jip Icheon Main Branch is a charcoal galbi Korean restaurant on Gyeongchung-daero 2541, and the parking lot is huge. Even though I arrived early, the lot was already packed with cars.

There's also a lunch special during lunch hours, and plenty of people seemed to be there just for the midday meal.

### Charcoal galbi grilled by a certified Korean-cuisine master

I had high expectations before even sitting down — this place was selected for the 2026 Blue Ribbon Survey and recognized as a hansik daega (Korean food master) and hansik myeongjang (Korean food grandmaster). It's also won the Grand Prize from the Speaker of the National Assembly, which made me even more curious.

## Inside the 120-seat hall and private rooms

The hall at Neul Gogi Jip Icheon Main Branch seats about 120 people, with both sofa seating and private rooms. From the entrance, the various awards on display already gave off a real 'famous restaurant' vibe.

One side of the entrance also sells local Icheon specialty products, so you can experience a taste of the region beyond just the meal.

Once inside, the space really felt huge. Along with comfortable sofa seating in the roughly 120-seat hall, there are also private rooms great for family gatherings or group meetups. It felt like a fine spot for family dinners as well as work dinners or group get-togethers.

## How does the self-serve lettuce bar work?

Neul Gogi Jip has a self-serve bar where you can freely grab the vegetables you need. If any side dish runs low, the staff kindly bring more when asked, so you can enjoy the meal without worrying about it.

## Neul Gogi Jip menu and what the meal cost

Neul Gogi Jip uses kiosk ordering, so there's no need to wait for staff — you can check the menu and order right away, which was convenient. The menu is quite varied too: besides the lunch special, there's beef short ribs, pork galbi, pork neck (mokal), pork belly, yukhoe (beef tartare), and even ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crab), so there's plenty to choose from.

Since this is supposedly the best charcoal galbi place in Icheon, there was no need to overthink it — we went straight for the nuruk-marinated pork galbi and pork neck.

### Water is food too: the mildly alkaline water

They serve mildly alkaline water, which gave the impression that they pay attention to the basics — even the water — under the idea that 'water is food too.'

## The banchan that comes with every order

The banchan (side dishes) at Neul Gogi Jip were set out generously, living up to the 'master' title. A welcome bite-sized portion of yangnyeom gejang (marinated crab) was included as standard.

There was a real variety — several kinds of kimchi, sweet pumpkin, broccoli, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry). Before the meat even arrived, I'd already tried a bit of everything and emptied quite a few plates. It didn't feel like thrown-together sides — each dish felt carefully prepared.

## Thick-cut nuruk-marinated pork galbi that melts in your mouth

The nuruk-marinated pork galbi at Neul Gogi Jip came sliced thick, and it looked appetizing just from the plate. Staff grilled the first batch for us, and watching the pork galbi sizzle over the charcoal made my mouth water.

After the first batch was expertly grilled, the rest was up to us to cook at our own pace — and maybe it was the quality charcoal, but even the way the meat cooked looked different from usual.

It really melts in your mouth. Out of all the pork galbi I've had, this was by far the most tender. The marinade was sweet without being overly so, with a subtle charcoal aroma layered in, and the meat was soft with tons of flavor in every bite.

Even though the pork galbi was thick, it wasn't chewy at all. The juices and marinade blended so well that I kept reaching for more. The claim that this is 'the best charcoal galbi place in Icheon' isn't an exaggeration — the flavor of meat grilled over charcoal was genuinely excellent.

## Receipt review event: golden bomb cheese egg custard

Another nice touch during the meal was the receipt review event! If you order and then leave a short review, you get the ₩8,000 golden bomb cheese egg custard (gyeranjjim) for free.

The fluffy egg custard topped with savory cheese was the perfect pairing with the meat. This would especially be a hit if you're visiting with kids.

## Free coffee and ice cream in the dessert lounge

After the meal, Neul Gogi Jip also has a lounge where you can enjoy dessert. A relaxing moment after a satisfying, full meal.

There's not just coffee but ice cream too, so it was nice to have some ice cream and a cup of coffee to unwind for a bit. Being able to handle both the meal and dessert in one place was also a big plus for a family dinner spot.

## Final verdict: who should eat at Neul Gogi Jip

If you're looking for great charcoal galbi in Icheon, or a place to enjoy a generous, comfortable Korean meal with family, Neul Gogi Jip is worth a visit. I'm keeping it in mind as a place I'd like to return to on my next trip to Icheon.
