## In short

Yeongjae Susan is a takeout sashimi shop on the first floor of the sales building at Garak Mall, by Garak Market Station in Songpa, Seoul. On a weekday evening around 6:30pm with no reservation, a small jeon-gwang-chamhoe platter (65,000 won) and sea squirt (5,000 won) were packed in a cooler bag within 10 minutes and carried to Jamsil Han River Park for a sashimi picnic with bokso-sa, the bokbunja-soju-cider mix. For two people who want large flounder, large red sea bream and gizzard shad in one platter, Yeongjae Susan is an easy stop on the way to the river.

I met up with my same-age cousin after a while and we tried out this 'sashimi picnic' thing that's apparently trending right now :) After work on a weekday, we grabbed takeout sashimi at Garak Market and headed straight to Jamsil Han River Park! We picked up jeon-gwang-chamhoe and sea squirt at ✶Yeongjae Susan✶, famous in Garak Market, and even tried the trendy 'bokso-sa' cocktail haha. Here's an honest record of everything from the takeout at Yeongjae Susan to our sashimi picnic by the river!

## Where is Yeongjae Susan, and how do you walk there from Garak Market Station?

Yeongjae Susan is located at 932 Yangjae-daero, Garak Mall sales building, 1st floor, C-10, Songpa-gu, Seoul. It's open 07:00–22:00, every day of the year, with 3 hours of free parking for customers (₩500 per 10 minutes after that). You can also eat at the seasoning restaurant after buying seafood (table charge separate), and there's a 20% discount coupon if you order through Naver.

If you're taking the subway, come out Exit 2 of Garak Market Station! Head left from Exit 2, and

you'll immediately see Garak Market like this! There are a lot of buildings, so if you're not sure which entrance to use, just head straight for the middle building. Keep going in and you'll reach the seafood market like this — from here, go right and

you'll see Entrance 6! Using this door gets you straight to Yeongjae Susan. It's right on the left as soon as you walk in! (Even on a weekday, the seafood market was packed with people~)

I visited around 6:30pm after work on a weekday, no reservation, and luckily there weren't too many orders ahead of me, so pickup took less than 10 minutes!

## Yeongjae Susan menu and prices: what the small jeon-gwang-chamhoe platter costs

![Yeongjae Susan's mixed sashimi platter menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-07-151fa-900.webp)

Yeongjae Susan's menu had a lot of combo platters mixing different seasonal fish. There was nong-gwang-chamhoe with sea bass, a summer fish, and other combos with jack mackerel too, but since we came specifically for gizzard shad, a fall specialty, we ordered the jeon-gwang-chamhoe, which includes it haha.

![Price list for mini, small, medium, large, and jumbo mixed sashimi platters](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-08-1fjwx-900.webp)

The mixed sashimi platters run on fixed prices by size — mini, small, medium, large, and jumbo. We went with the small size, which was just right for two people. Since the fish species change with the season, you'll probably find a slightly different lineup depending on when you visit. Also, ordering ahead through Naver gets you a 20% discount, so pre-ordering is a more budget-friendly way to go~!

> Jeon-gwang-chamhoe ₩65,000 (₩52,000 with Naver coupon)
> Sea squirt ₩5,000

And then there's live shrimp, which has been taking over my algorithm lately! I bought live shrimp at another shop in Garak Market before, and that place charged ₩35,000 per kg. But the shrimp looked about the same size, and Yeongjae Susan was selling it for ₩31,000 per kg! I couldn't buy any this time since we were headed to the river, but I'm planning to grab some next time~haha

![Various seafood in the tanks at Yeongjae Susan](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-10-183wv-900.webp)

There seemed to be a lot of other seafood besides shrimp too. The tanks looked really well maintained!

![Jeon-gwang-chamhoe packed neatly in a cooler bag](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-11-1cj7g-900.webp)

In under 10 minutes, our order was ready! Most seafood markets just use plastic bags, but Yeongjae Susan packed everything neatly in a cooler bag. Thanks to that, I could carry it all the way to the river without worrying about it!

## Setting up the sashimi picnic at Jamsil Han River Park

We moved the jeon-gwang-chamhoe from Yeongjae Susan to Jamsil Han River Park and laid it out while watching the sunset. Thanks to the cooler bag, the sashimi didn't get jostled around during the trip. Isn't the Han River sunset just gorgeous..・・★

![Evening sunset at Jamsil Han River Park](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-12-1gdhf-900.webp)

Enough sightseeing for now! Let's get set up quick haha

![Sashimi picnic set up on a mat at the Han River park](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-13-hv98e-900.webp)

When we opened it up, thick, generous slices of sashimi came pouring out! Is this really the small size? Sashimi is supposed to have that moist shine •.✦ when it's really fresh and delicious, and even at night, you could clearly see it glistening haha.

My cousin's dog came along too haha. If we'd eaten at the market, the dog couldn't have joined us, but since we packed it to go and came to the river, we got the romance of the riverside AND the dog! 100% happiness overload!!!

## What is in the jeon-gwang-chamhoe platter? Gizzard shad, large flounder and large red sea bream

Let's dive into the fish properly! Jeon-gwang-chamhoe is made up of three types of fish: gizzard shad, large flounder, and large red sea bream. Apparently the flounder and red sea bream both come from whole fish weighing over 3kg!

Maybe that's why each slice of flounder was huge and thick. It had a firm, chewy texture — the chewiness was clearly different from regular flounder haha. So good~~

![Thickly sliced large flounder sashimi with fin meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-16-646vu-841.webp)

The fin meat was thick and big too — a size I'd never seen before..!! The red sea bream passed the test too! I'm obsessed with sashimi and have tried it at markets, via delivery, and at all kinds of restaurants, but this had none of that fishy smell and really brought out that distinct sweet, nutty sashimi flavor.

### Bokso-sa, the Han River drink: the mixing ratio

Can't skip the drinks here haha. We also made ★bokso-sa★, which is trending hard on the Han River these days~ Mix bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine), soju, and sprite in a 1:1:1 ratio over a cup packed with ice~ I wondered if something this sweet would go with sashimi, and yes, it totally does!! You barely taste the alcohol and it was genuinely delicious haha.

![A glass of bokso-sa made with bokbunja wine, soju, and sprite](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-18-10lx1-669.webp)

### How autumn gizzard shad sekkoshi (bone-in sliced fish) tastes

The star piled high on one side of the platter: gizzard shad! Can you see the shine on it~?! It's sliced bone-in, seggoshi-style, and since it's fall — the peak season — the bones were soft enough that eating it wasn't uncomfortable at all.

![Bone-in fall gizzard shad seggoshi](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-19-1wc4m-652.webp)

And the nutty flavor was really strong. Nutty and clean, so delicious. My cousin said gizzard shad was her top pick of the day lol. There's a Korean saying that even a runaway daughter-in-law comes back home for fall gizzard shad — now I get why~haha

Lastly, since it felt like something was missing, we added sea squirt for ₩5,000! It was nice and plump too, no bitterness or fishiness, full of that briny ocean flavor and genuinely delicious.

![The extra plump sea squirt that was added on](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-20-1rpvm-574.webp)

We ate our way through it for a long while, taking in the Han River view haha. The sashimi quality was really good.

![Han River ramyeon cooked to finish off the picnic](https://img.superchart.com/images/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic/garak-market-yeongjae-sushi-hangang-picnic-22-oxgtd-900.webp)

To finish, of course, Han River ramyeon~~ We went with spicy squid jjamppong-flavor to keep the seafood theme going haha.

*Say hi to my cousin's dog~ haha*

## Is Yeongjae Susan a good sashimi picnic for two?

Overall, the sashimi quality was great and the portions were generous — Yeongjae Susan's jeon-gwang-chamhoe was just right for two people eating by the Han River! It's especially good if you want to sample large flounder, large red sea bream, and gizzard shad all in one go, plus other seasonal fish. With the 20% Naver discount and prices that felt reasonable compared to other seafood market shops overall, I'm planning to come back and pick up live shrimp too for another Han River sashimi picnic 🦐💛
