A good spot in Ansan when you're craving hot kimchi jjigae with freshly made stone-pot rice. I visited Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch in Gojan-dong. It's been a kimchi jjigae specialist run by the same family since 2006, now in its third generation — and apparently this is the original main branch, not a franchise or chain location. From the kimchi jjigae to the stone-pot rice, self-serve bar, and dessert, the whole meal felt pretty well put together.

The restaurant sits in an alley behind the BYC building, off the main road by Gojan New Town's 25-si Plaza. It's fairly close to NC Department Store and Homeplus, and about 829m from Gojan Station Exit 2. Good option if you're looking for a place to eat around Ansan Lake Park, or want a solid meal on the way to Daebudo.

## Inside Choburi: 58 seats, roomy and comfortable

Walking in, the place was bigger than expected. With 58 seats total, the tables weren't cramped and everything felt clean and well maintained.

Looked good for a family meal or a bigger group. If you need a table for 5 or more, they said calling ahead to reserve is the way to go.

## The self-serve bar: rice, side dishes and ramyeon noodles

There's a separate self-serve bar on one side. Rice and side dishes, plus unlimited ramyeon noodles — the essential companion to kimchi jjigae.

Nice to see the side dishes weren't thrown together carelessly, and overall the seasoning wasn't too strong, so it was easy for older folks to eat comfortably too.

They use 100% domestic napa cabbage kimchi and domestic onions, and the pork is officially certified 1st-grade Korean fresh pork (han-don) — no imported or frozen meat, they say. You could really tell they cared about ingredients.

## Bubbling kimchi jjigae with ramyeon noodles

The stew arrives looking hearty right from the start. Plenty of kimchi and pork, plus tofu and green onion for a proper full pot. They use a special sauce aged for 72 hours and fresh vegetable broth made daily. Once it's bubbling away, the kimchi's tangy kick and the pork's savory flavor paired really well together.

They added ramyeon noodles partway through. Since the noodles are unlimited, you can always ask for more if you run out.

## Perilla oil fried eggs, golden gardenia pot rice and a scorched rice finish

The perilla oil fried eggs were perfect alongside the kimchi jjigae. Breaking the yolk a little and eating it with the stone-pot rice was great, and popping one in between spoonfuls of the spicy stew worked well too.

The stone-pot rice is made to order with Sindongjin rice and golden gardenia, giving the rice a subtle yellow tint and nice sheen.

Scoop out the freshly cooked rice first, then pour water into the pot to make scorched rice (nurungji) at the end. Plain white rice is fine with kimchi jjigae, but this fresh stone-pot rice combo was on another level.

## Kimchi jeonbyeong side, 7,000 won

We also ordered the kimchi jeonbyeong as a side. Golden and crisp on the outside, packed full of kimchi filling inside.

The texture was soft yet chewy, and the seasoning was milder than expected, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy. Good option to add on if kimchi jjigae alone feels like it's not quite enough.

## Dessert: misugaru slush, ice cream and coffee

The meal didn't just end after eating. There was misugaru (roasted grain powder) slushie, ice cream in three flavors, Paul Bassett drip coffee, and Maxim mix coffee. Having dessert included with the meal meant we didn't need to head to a separate café for coffee afterward. With ice cream too, this would be a hit for a family outing with kids.

This is the kind of Gojan-dong restaurant that comes to mind when you want kimchi jjigae to be the real star of the meal. The combo of domestic kimchi and han-don fresh pork jjigae with made-to-order golden gardenia stone-pot rice was great. The self-serve bar for rice, side dishes, and ramyeon noodles, plus dessert with ice cream and coffee, made the whole thing feel well rounded. The space is also spacious and comfortable, so it's worth a visit for a family meal, a group dinner, or when you're looking for a good dinner spot in Ansan.
