Since it had been a while, I wanted to treat my parents to a proper restorative meal, so we went to Yuil Jangeo (유일장어), a Gwangju eel spot that everyone has been raving about haha. Yuil Jangeo is a self-service grilled-eel specialist that runs its own fish farm directly!! They say that by cutting labor costs and middle distribution steps, they can offer fresh, high-quality freshwater eel at prices close to the lowest in the country. The building was so huge that I couldn’t even fit the whole exterior into one camera frame hahaha. It was grandeur itself, seriously... It is in the Donggok-dong commercial area near Pyeongdong Station in Gwangsan, Gwangju, with good road access and an easy route in. Parking can be a concern when bringing parents, meeting family, or coming for a company dinner, but its dedicated large parking lot was so spacious there was zero worry haha. Along with a roomy, comfortable main hall, there were group seats and private rooms suited to group gatherings, family meals, and company dinners. We wanted a cozy room with my parents too, but every room was occupied when we visited, so sadly we sat in the hall ㅠㅠ If you plan to use a room, I recommend reserving ahead!! The entrance also had a clear guide to using Yuil Jangeo. At the seafood-counter register, you inspect and choose the prepared eel yourself, pay for it, then grill it over charcoal at the table you are assigned. The table-setting fee and extra food or drinks are paid afterward when leaving. The restaurant says it selects only premium domestically raised Japanese eel, or japo nica eel. The flesh looked thick and the quality was incredible... Besides eating at the restaurant, they offer takeout discounts and nationwide eel delivery; shipping is free for purchases of ₩100,000 or more haha. I had to double-check the price tag... Freshwater eel was only ₩42,000. I thought three people eating their fill at an eel restaurant would easily cost well over ₩100,000, but perhaps because of the farm-direct self-service system, the value was absolutely insane haha. Behind the display counter, we could also see fresh eel aging in a dedicated maturation refrigerator. There were leafy wrap vegetables, spicy-tangy green onion kimchi, chilled soup, perilla leaves, and plenty of great eel accompaniments. The green onion kimchi was especially a work of art—I have no idea how many refills I got haha. It is self-grilling, but a staff member helped with the initial prep: cooking the outside of the eel and putting it on the grill. After that, I carefully grilled it myself... Cha-gal!! How are my eel skills, lined up so perfectly and neatly?! Hahaha. The thick eel standing in sharp, tidy rows was pure Instagram aesthetic. The bubbling earthenware pot made my heart swell with grandeur haha. Its broth was thick and deeply flavorful, filling my whole mouth—it was genuinely amazing. This was seriously ridiculously good—cha-gal, cha-gal, cha-gal!!!! Even at this low price, the eel’s flavor and quality were all-time level haha. It was crisp outside, moist and firm inside, and rich juices burst in my mouth; I simply could not stop marveling... It was delicious with julienned pungent fresh ginger over the house teriyaki sauce; rolling it up with the spicy-tangy green onion kimchi was insane too; and making a ssam (leafy wrap) with fresh vegetables, eel, and garlic was fantastic haha. With the eel soup alongside it, “Owner, one bottle of soju please ㅠㅠ” was practically at the tip of my throat. I was curious about the eel tteokgalbi (Korean grilled minced-meat patty) side dish too, so I ordered it—and it was only ₩2,500 hahaha. I browned the outside on the charcoal grill and took one bite, and honestly... it was unbelievably delicious, cha-gal cha-gal hahaha!! It was moist rather than dry, with no fishy odor, and the more I chewed, the more its clean, savory nuttiness filled my mouth. I think it would suit both children and parents’ tastes, and this quality for ₩2,500?! You absolutely have to add it when you come to Yuil Jangeo haha. After stuffing myself with rich eel, a cool cup of coffee made for the perfect ending haha. I loved these small thoughtful details too!! ## Yuil Jangeo, where I want to return for another family meal To put Yuil Jangeo in Gwangju, where I took my parents, in one phrase... it was insanely cha-gal, absolutely crazy hahaha!! For the sweet price of ₩42,000 for three servings, we were fully satisfied with domestic Japanese eel, ₩2,500 eel tteokgalbi, and rich eel soup. I am 240,000% planning to return every time I come to Gwangju!! With its majestic scale, spacious and convenient large parking lot, neat side dishes, and high-quality charcoal-grilled eel, I recommend it for bringing parents, family meals, or group company dinners.
