## In short

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a 25-year-old kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and bossam (boiled pork) restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro in Suwon, a 10-minute walk from Suwon Station. Arriving right at opening, the writer ordered clam kalguksu and a bossam set plus an extra plate of sliced pork, and the staff even brought four bowls of barley rice, one for the 17-month-old baby. Four people, including the baby, ate until full — bossam included — for under ₩50,000.

Following up on my last post about a big café in Suwon, here's the Suwon Station kalguksu spot I hit for breakfast the moment I got into town: Daseon Kalguksu. I'd wanted to go for ages, and I finally made it.

## Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, outside the shop

![Exterior view of Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-01-1skcf-900.webp)

![Old-school entrance of Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-02-6jkbh-900.webp)

You can smell the old-school, been-here-forever vibe from the entrance. I had high expectations already, and the place looked so much like a real local favorite that I just wanted to get inside faster.

I lived near Suwon Station for over 10 years growing up, but I'd never actually been here myself — though my mom and dad had, ages ago. I'm more of a meat person, but my mom is a noodle person, and since she's lived in Suwon for almost 30 years, she's basically been to every famous kalguksu place in the area.

## Menu and prices — kal-nakji (knife-cut noodles with octopus) is the star

![Menu board and prices at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-03-1l1ek-1200.webp)

![Menu board with kal-nakji at the center](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-04-1ciun-900.webp)

'A bowl of 25 years of care!' There was a sticker showing it had been featured on SBS's Today program for its kal-nakji. That aired in 2023, so it's been almost 30 years by now!! Not sure the shop has been in this exact spot the whole time, but it's clearly been around forever.

Once inside, checking the menu, kal-nakji was obviously the headline dish — it's literally planted right in the center of the board so there's no missing it. I wanted to try it, but apparently it's spicy, so we just went with kalguksu and the bossam set instead.

## Inside the restaurant and business hours

The interior is simple and clean. I thought we were doing an early-morning run, but there were already customers who'd arrived before us. It's a comfortable spot for solo dining too, so it makes sense that people show up this early for breakfast like we did. For reference, this Suwon Station lunch favorite is open daily from 10:30 in the morning until 10 at night.

## Barley rice, with a bowl even for the 17-month-old

After we ordered and waited a bit, they brought out barley rice first. This is where I got touched the first time — we hadn't even ordered anything for the baby separately, but they set out four bowls of barley rice. And they were thoughtful enough to top the baby's with gim (dried seaweed) instead of the usual radish strips, which the baby loved. I went with my 17-month-old, and out of all the baby-friendly restaurants near Suwon Station, I'd genuinely recommend this one. Photos below — the kalguksu was really delicious too! She ate so well I even put it up as a clip on my husband's blog, haha.

![Baby's barley rice topped with dried seaweed instead](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-10-17tol-900.webp)

The barley rice had this bouncy, chewy texture that was so good. I honestly hadn't had barley rice in a while — maybe 2 to 3 years — so tasting that texture again after so long, it was exactly my thing.

## Simple side dishes

![Crisp kimchi and salted shrimp side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-11-ywjra-900.webp)

![Small dish of salted shrimp for the pork](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-12-1qla3-900.webp)

For basic banchan (side dishes), we got crisp, refreshing kimchi and salted shrimp for dipping the pork.

![Extra plate of sliced boiled pork ordered separately](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-13-1aer4-900.webp)

![Extra pork plate with double the set portion](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-14-smhju-900.webp)

![Close-up of the pork plate topped with seaweed](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-15-1wk9d-900.webp)

The pork that comes with the set felt like it might not be quite enough for us — my husband and I both love meat — so we ordered an extra plate of sliced pork on top. It definitely came out at about double the amount of the set portion. If you love boiled pork like I do, I'd recommend adding this extra plate.

## The main dishes: clam kalguksu and bossam

![Full table spread of kalguksu and bossam set](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-16-1ozme-900.webp)

![Seven pieces of pork included with the set](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-17-15qb2-900.webp)

This is the pork that comes with the kalguksu-and-bossam set — about seven pieces. It's not a small amount to go alongside a bowl of noodles. It comes out warm, tender, and neatly arranged all the way through, which felt like real care went into it.

![Cross-section of pork with lean meat and fat](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family/suwon-station-kalguksu-morning-opening-family-18-oe1i1-900.webp)

The pork had a nice balance of lean meat and fat, so it was mild and savory. It's good on its own, good dipped in the salted shrimp, but honestly best of all wrapped up with kimchi.

*Clam kalguksu at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch*

And now the most important part — the kalguksu! They say kal-nakji is the most famous dish here, but the clam kalguksu was genuinely excellent too. For one thing, the single-serving portion was generous.

The noodles had that nice bouncy, chewy texture, and paired really well with the clean broth. The broth was clear-style, which is exactly the kind I love.

## The baby's favorite: clam kalguksu

But the one who ate the most happily out of all of us was our daughter! Is it normal for a baby to love kalguksu this much? The staff said the clam kalguksu might be a little too spicy for her, but our 17-month-old ate it up with zero problem. I think she ate more than I did!

## Under ₩50,000 for four — the value breakdown

A Suwon lunch spot, a Suwon Station lunch spot, that made the whole family happy — Daseon Kalguksu. There's a reason it's stayed a beloved old restaurant for this long, both in taste and price. The value made it even more satisfying. Four of us, including the baby, ate until we were full, bossam and all, and it still came out to under ₩50,000 :-)

Highly recommend this for anyone near Suwon Station wanting a casual kalguksu lunch, or anyone who loves boiled pork.
