## In short

Manmok is a Kanto-style eel rice bowl restaurant less than a five-minute walk from Seonleung Station Exit 2 in Gangnam, Seoul. Visiting on a weekday just after 1pm, I ordered the whole eel rice bowl (39,000 won) and the one-and-a-half-eel bowl (50,000 won), and what stood out most at Manmok were the quiet partitioned seats and a restroom stocked with personal amenities. A calm Gangnam lunch spot that works for solo diners and team dinners alike.

A private lunch, done the proper Japanese eel rice bowl way — this is Manmok near Seonleung Station.

I had business in Gangnam, and there are just so many good restaurants around there. While searching around, I found this place famous for eel rice bowl — Manmok, which does the Japanese style properly. It's easy for solo diners too, making it a Daechi-dong lunch spot that's easy for travelers to visit as well.

## Manmok's hours, break time and parking

Manmok is open 11:00–22:00, with a break time of 15:00–17:00, and last orders at 14:20 and 21:20. There's parking in front for up to 2 cars.

Manmok sits under 5 minutes' walk from Seonleung Station Exit 2. There's parking space right in front, but only 2 spots. If you let them know ahead of time they'll help guide you, and there are other facilities nearby too — WeWork, Samjeong Building, Aleumvil, Nice Park — so don't worry too much.

## Partitioned seats: quiet enough for solo dining

Manmok has partitions between each seating area, so you can eat quietly even solo. The space is so pretty I couldn't stop taking pictures. I went a little after 1pm for a Daechi-dong lunch, and there were quite a few customers already. When I was taking photos things had briefly quieted down, but more customers kept coming after. Foreigners, people traveling through Gangnam, and office workers nearby all seemed to come here for solo meals.

With partitions in every space, it's quiet and gives you a good amount of privacy, so I'd recommend this place if you want a quiet solo eel rice bowl lunch in Gangnam.

## Manmok's menu, prices and corkage policy

Here's Manmok's menu. There's really nothing else to choose but eel rice bowl — you pick between half, whole, or one and a half servings. Prices aren't as steep as I expected either. They also sell draft beer and highballs, and corkage is free, so this could be a nice place for a company dinner or a special occasion.

When we visited, they had to cook fresh rice, so it took about 10 minutes. Freshly steamed rice made me look forward to the taste even more.

Ah, opening this lid is always exciting and makes me happy. I wish every day could just be this moment, haha.

### One-and-a-half-eel rice bowl, 50,000 won

🍽️ Eel rice bowl, one and a half servings, ₩50,000. My friend is an eel fanatic, so I ordered the biggest portion for her. It's a set with quite a lot of eel — a serving and a half. Stacked in two layers, it felt really generous.

### Whole eel rice bowl, 39,000 won

🍽️ Eel rice bowl, one serving, ₩39,000. I chose the whole serving, which is of course a bit less than one and a half, but compared to other places, the amount of eel still felt generous.

### Clear matsutake soup and steamed egg at Manmok

The clear soup with matsutake mushroom had a mild broth, but with a lingering mushroom aroma — a really great pairing with the eel rice bowl.

The steamed egg — what can I even say. It's pudding-soft, melts right in your mouth. 'Melts' is honestly the only word for it. There's even shrimp inside, adding a huge boost of umami.

## Wasabi, sansho pepper and the Kanto-style grilling

Manmok's eel rice bowl comes with wasabi, pickled radish, pickled ginger (beni shoga), and sansho pepper as accompaniments. These are the hidden magicians. The eel rice bowl is great on its own, but with this combination it felt like a whole different experience.

![Close-up of eel grilled Kanto-style](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-private-partition-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-private-partition-manmok-18-1e21e-900.webp)

Manmok has chosen the Kanto-style method to preserve the eel's original flavor — the technique commonly used in Tokyo and the Kanto region, where the eel is split along the back, lightly grilled first, then steamed once before being basted and grilled. It's quite labor-intensive, right? Thanks to that, it has a soft, fluffy texture.

If it suits your taste, adding sansho powder brings out the eel's flavor even more. Sansho can be quite polarizing, so if it's your first time, I'd recommend trying a small amount first before adding more.

Because it's steamed once and then grilled, the fat drains off, so you get to taste the eel's clean, light flavor. If you usually think eel is greasy or heavy, try Manmok — it'll change your mind about eel.

Even though I don't usually love wasabi, Manmok's wasabi was delicious too. The eel with its fluffy, moist, chewy texture... just so good.

I like to pile on a bit of wasabi and sansho here, and honestly it feels like such a luxurious Daechi-dong lunch. The eel and sansho combination is incredible.

Every single side dish was so good that I scraped up every last grain of rice, haha. I was so full, the portion was pretty generous, but everything tasted so good I didn't want to leave anything behind. Truly delicious. Manmok is still on my mind as a Daechi-dong lunch spot.

## What's in Manmok's restroom?

Manmok's restroom has personal hygiene items like combs, mouthwash, and dental floss, plus hand wash and lotion from various luxury brands. Actually, my friend went to the restroom and didn't come back for a while. I figured it was nothing unusual, but oh my god — once you go into this restroom, you can't leave, haha. You just put on whatever you like. Out of all the restaurants I've visited, this restroom was the best.

## Dessert: matcha and black tea ice cream

They offered ice cream for dessert, and I happily accepted. There were matcha and black tea flavors prepared separately, and the matcha was genuinely intense in flavor. The black tea was also rich, but the matcha really stood out. If you love green tea, you'll enjoy this bittersweet flavor.

## Who Manmok is best for

This was truly one of the top Daechi-dong lunch spots I've had. It's very quiet, with partitions that give a sense of privacy, so it's great for a quiet solo meal or even a company dinner.

- Free corkage makes it a great spot for special occasions
- Portions range from half to one and a half servings, so eel lovers can order generously
- The sansho and wasabi that come with the meal are genuinely appealing
- The matsutake-scented soup pairs beautifully with the eel

Above all, the eel rice bowl prices were more affordable than expected — the kind of quality that made me wonder if the price was right. Truly a luxurious lunch.
