## In short

Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch is a Harbin-style lamb skewer and Chinese restaurant on the second floor of a building on Gwangju-daero 55beon-gil in Gyeongan-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Visiting with parents as a party of four, the writer ordered the couple set plus fish-fragrant eggplant, smashed cucumber (oi tangtangi) and boiled dumplings, then added egg fried rice and sausage skewers, and found no gamey lamb smell at all despite a smell-sensitive palate. Open until 2am with parking fees covered, Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch works just as well for a family dinner as for a late second round of drinks.

I've been staying off alcohol on weekdays lately for health reasons, but when my parents got back from a 3-night, 4-day trip and called saying they'd treat me to something good, I dashed out the door.

The place we went to with my parents was Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch, a lamb skewer specialist in Gwangju, Gyeonggi that's already built a name as a Gyeongan-dong favorite through word of mouth! Here's my vivid account of a visit that exceeded expectations.

## Where is Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch, and how late is it open?

Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch is on the 2nd floor of a building at 7 Gwangju-daero 55beon-gil, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. It stays open generously until 2am, making it a great pick for late-night eats or a second round of drinks.

Even on a weekday evening, the place was already packed with customers, true to its reputation as a Gyeongan-dong favorite. In one corner, some nostalgic arcade machines caught my eye. We'd called ahead to reserve, and they seated us right on time at a neatly set table.

By the way, the owner couple are seriously upbeat and full of energy. My mom and dad were completely won over by the female owner's friendly, warm chatter and kept chatting happily throughout the meal.

## Lucky draws and 10% discounts: the deals at Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi

Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi has all kinds of participation events for guests. There's a no-miss nostalgic lucky draw, a Karrot (Danggeun Market) review event, and plenty of other perks.

On top of that, they're running a Naver receipt photo review event and a ₩1,000 instant discount for adding them on KakaoTalk Plus Friend — worth checking out if you like to save a little.

The tablet menu also showed seaweed soup for birthdays, plum drink service for pregnant guests, and a 10% discount for soldiers, police, and firefighters. It's a nice touch that shows the owner's thoughtfulness.

## The menu, cooked by a chef from Harbin

Looking through the menu, the lineup is pretty varied. Turns out the chef is actually from Harbin and makes every dish the authentic local way.

My family had just come back from a Harbin trip not long ago, where even my mom, who usually has no appetite, was blown away by the food — so I was already excited at the thought of tasting real Harbin flavors again.

The four of us ordered a couple set with fish-fragrant eggplant, smashed cucumber, and boiled dumplings, then later added fried rice and sausage skewers for good measure.

## Wireless charging tables, the self-serve bar and window-side seats

I was impressed to see fast wireless phone chargers built right into every table. My battery was nearly dead, so it came in handy. The side drawer had cumin, spicy chili flakes, seasoned salt, and even hair ties — a thoughtful, detailed touch.

The basic side dishes, roasted peanuts and pickled radish (jacai), are set out at a self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant, so you can grab as much as you like without hesitation.

The window side has a real terrace feel, perfect for this cool weather with the breeze coming through. Looking down at the alley from the 2nd floor with the crisp air, the atmosphere naturally makes you want a drink.

We called for Tsingtao beer, an essential pairing with lamb skewers, and toasted together. My weekday no-drinking pledge went out the window, but that cold beer was so sweet and refreshing it washed all the tiredness away.

The grill was set with glowing red charcoal, and the skewers and dishes we ordered were safely delivered to our table by a serving robot with an adorable cat face.

## Did the lamb skewers taste gamey?

Honestly, aside from Sapporo-style Genghis Khan lamb, I'm not usually a fan of regular lamb skewers because of their distinct gamey smell. But here at Sinbaegok in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, I didn't detect even a trace of it. Even with my smell-sensitive palate, the juices just burst out savory and delicious, going down without any hesitation.

### Fish-fragrant eggplant and smashed cucumber (oi tangtangi)

The fish-fragrant eggplant, a textbook crispy-outside, tender-inside dish, is a must-order. Thick-cut eggplant fried until crisp and tossed in a sweet-and-spicy sauce — I don't know why eggplant gets more delicious the older I get.

![A plate of tangy, crisp smashed cucumber](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner-18-omnpy-900.webp)

The smashed cucumber, tangy and crisp, refreshed our palate and was essential for cutting through the richness.

### Boiled dumplings and guobaorou

I ordered the dumplings remembering the best boiled dumplings of my life at 'Xijiade' during my Harbin trip! The thin, chewy dumpling skin was packed with juicy filling — solidly above average.

The crispy, chewy guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) was honestly better than what I had at a famous local restaurant in Harbin. The local version tends to have a vinegar smell so strong it's overpowering, but here they nailed a sweet-and-sour balance perfectly suited to Korean tastes. I later found out the 'three-color guobaorou' is this place's signature dish — I'll have to try that next time.

Even my parents, who don't usually eat much, kept picking up skewers and clearly loved every bite.

### The owner's trick for sliding meat off a skewer

While I was awkwardly pulling meat off piece by piece with tongs, looking every bit the lamb skewer newbie, the friendly owner walked by and showed me a pro tip — using the groove in the skewer rack to pull the meat off all at once haha. He also proudly mentioned that all the dishware gets high-temperature sterilized every single day, so you can eat with total peace of mind.

### Sausage skewers

I ordered the sausage skewers craving the smoked sausage (hongchang) I had during my Harbin trip! Grilled crispy on the outside over charcoal, they had a salty, springy bite that was perfect with beer.

![Taking part in the nostalgic paper lucky draw event](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner-21-vwzkc-900.webp)

## Lucky draw prize and egg fried rice

During the meal, there was a nostalgic paper lucky draw event! The three of us joined the review event and drew eagerly, but all three of us landed 5th place (a nostalgic snack) haha. The owner said there are still three 1st-place ₩50,000 meal vouchers left in the box, so everyone else should definitely go for 1st!

By the time we were finishing the meat, we craved some carbs and ordered egg fried rice. The fluffy grains carried a savory smoky char, and the portion was generous for the price, filling us right up.

## Parking fees covered and free coffee on the way out

They also cover the nearby public parking fee upon payment, so you can enjoy the meal without worrying about parking.

By the register, there were old-school snacks for dessert, which we happily grabbed on our way out.

![Free coffee machine and old-school snacks near the exit](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner/gyeongan-dong-lamb-skewers-family-dinner-24-419ee-900.webp)

And the hidden gem of this place is the coffee machine by the exit. It had richer, more fragrant crema than most franchise café beans, easily the best free coffee I've had at a restaurant all year.

After finishing our meal, we headed downstairs and found a row of claw machine and arcade spots nearby, so we stopped in to help digest. We ended up barely managing to grab some mystery cocoon-shaped(?) plush toy and walked home giggling.

If you want lamb skewers with no gamey smell and authentic local-style dishes, I highly recommend Sinbaegok Yang Kkochi Gyeongan Branch, a top pick for lamb skewers in Gwangju, Gyeonggi and a Gyeongan-dong favorite known for its warm hospitality!
