Hi, this is Mole-i. Craving Japanese food tonight — while hunting for a good ramen spot near Gumi Station's Geumnidan-gil, I found 'Menya Tanuki.' Honest review, let's go.

## Where Menya Tanuki is and when it opens

Menya Tanuki is at 19 Geumosan-ro 12-gil, 1st floor, Gumi-si, Gyeongbuk, on Geumnidan-gil near the back exit of Gumi Station. Hours are 11:30–21:00, break time is 15:30–17:00, and last order is at 15:00 and 20:30.

Menya Tanuki is located on Geumnidan-gil behind Gumi Station. The shop info said 3–4 cars can park in front — you can see the situation out front here.

Menya Tanuki's sign is in Japanese so it's hard to read, but I'd looked it up on blogs beforehand so I found it easily. If you're visiting in the evening, look for the sign glowing a soft yellow-orange.

## How long was the Sunday evening wait?

I'd searched blogs beforehand and heard the lunch and dinner waits are brutal. We visited around 5:50pm on a Sunday with 3 people, and luckily there were seats. Right after we got in, two more people came in and the waiting line started immediately.

Order at the kiosk on the right as soon as you walk in. Make sure to close the door firmly when you come in — if you close it too lightly it stays open.

Menya Tanuki has one 4-person table and about 10 counter seats. Most guests that day were in their 20s-30s, mostly couples, but there were also people dining solo. Ramen shops tend to have lots of counter seats, so they're great for solo dining.

The first thing to arrive was a compact plate of whole shrimp dimsum.

The sauce underneath tastes like fish sauce.

Shrimp bits show up throughout! The flavor is about half shrimp, half flour. A few reviews mentioned it tasting a bit fishy, but I think that's just the sauce's particular flavor.

## Spicy shoyu ramen: how hot is it, and how are the noodles?

The spicy shoyu ramen came out 20 minutes after ordering. The place was fully packed so it took a while. The owner cooks alone with just one staff member, so things take time! If you visit Menya Tanuki, I'd recommend going early to skip the wait. And go when you have some time to spare rather than being starving — ramen naturally takes a bit to prepare.

The spicy level is about like Shin Ramyun — not very spicy, so it's worth trying even if you're cautious. Two thin slices of chashu pork came with it. Interestingly, there were no bean sprouts — apparently that's normal for shoyu ramen. The broth is on the salty side, but since I don't usually drink the broth and just eat the noodles, it was fine for me. If it's too salty for you, just ask staff — they'll probably add more broth.

The noodles are quite chewy, with a nice bite. Wrapping them in seaweed made them way tastier. I saw another blog review where the writer added 5 extra sheets of seaweed — man, that person really knew what they were doing. Add several sheets of seaweed for the best flavor.

At any ramen shop, the soft-boiled egg makes or breaks the impression. This one was cooked just right. The egg was seasoned too, giving it a nice salty edge!

## Mild mazesoba, 10,500 won, and how to mix it

The mazesoba arrived at the same time as the shoyu ramen. Great presentation, haha. At ramen shops, having to arrange every topping one by one like this must double the prep time.

How to eat mazesoba the best way:
1. Mix it well with the egg yolk
2. Add about half a spoon of vinegar
3. After finishing the noodles, mix the rice into the leftover sauce

Our group found the mazesoba quite salty that day, so we mixed it with rice from the start.

Most ramen shops give you a tiny scoop of rice, but this place gave a decent amount, which I appreciated.

## The downside: a missed order and a 40-minute wait

By the time we were nearly done with our ramen, one dish still hadn't come out, so I asked if the order had actually gone through. A table that arrived after us was already eating their ramen. Staff said the order had gone in, so we waited — then someone came back and apologized, explaining our order had been dropped. So we waited again. After that they made our missed ramen top priority and it came out fast! But this time, the ramen we ordered mild came out spicy... lol.

### The moment I nearly gave up

My parents, worn out from waiting, said they'd just eat it as is, but staff insisted on remaking it, so we waited yet again. With just one owner plus one staff member and the place slammed, I guess that's how the order errors happened. Still, they apologized right away and remade it.

Even when placing the order initially, they'd logged 1 dimsum order as 2, so just in case, I repeated our whole order twice to double-check. Even so, an order error still happened. The staff member was sweet but clearly still new — juggling the kitchen, serving, clearing tables, and guiding waiting customers is just too much for one person. I ordered in person, but since you'll all be ordering via the kiosk, you don't need to worry about order errors.

After all that back and forth, the mild shoyu ramen finally arrived 40 minutes after we walked in!! Precious. It's chicken broth with soy sauce — fans of shoyu ramen will probably love it. Personally, whatever ramen shop I go to, I usually order the spicy version or mazesoba, so the spicy one was more my taste.

## What happened when we paid

Since I'd visited as part of a sponsored campaign with a discount, I only needed to pay the remaining amount after the discount. They processed the discount and immediately said goodbye, so I asked, isn't there an extra amount to pay? They said oh, right, and calculated the remaining balance. The place was so busy they must have been flustered. Paid the rest and left, lol.

## Is Menya Tanuki worth the trip? Final verdict

- Good accessibility since it's near Gumi Station.
- The wait time can be long.
