## In short

Haemul Teukbyeolsi Cheongna Direct Branch is a seafood restaurant in Seohae, Incheon, serving a hot-plate seafood jjim set with a whole squid. We had level-1 spice with clams, bean sprouts, clam soup, corn cheese, and flat dumplings for a seriously filling lunch. Verdict: a great stop when you want warm, spicy seafood jjim.

## A whole-squid hot-plate seafood jjim set in Cheongna

This week, we decided we were having spicy, warming seafood jjim. On the way to catch some breeze at Yeongjongdo, we were wondering what to eat... and this place landed right on our Cheongna restaurant radar.

We debated between a whole squid and the hot-plate seafood jjim versus agu-jjim (spicy braised monkfish), but the idea here is a hot-plate seafood set that stays warm while you eat. It came with a taster clam soup, hot-plate corn cheese, and flat dumplings too, so the portions felt generous.

We chose spice level 1. The next level was said to be about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. The rich sauce was so good, and it was fun picking out the plump bean sprouts and seafood. I do love algoni (fish roe and milt)... haha. The two of us really had a proper lunch that day.

Haemul Teukbyeolsi is a place for agu-jjim, seafood jjim, and lunch-special handmade seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), among other dishes.

## A generous table setting before the main dish

At times like this, you have to lay out a big spread. If you reserve before visiting, you get fried shrimp per person, which was lovely and crisp before the main jjim arrived.

I was about to order flat dumplings as soon as I saw them, haha, but they came with the clam soup and corn cheese as part of the basic spread. We were sampling each side dish before the main seafood jjim came out. You can pick up any extra side dishes from the self-service bar. Honestly, the cleaner-tasting jjim sauce is the kind you crave more as it gets hotter—you keep eating it while saying, “Oh, this is spicy.” Picking through the seafood is quietly addictive too.

Their signature is hot-plate seafood jjim: monkfish, algoni, seafood... and a whole squid, all bubbling away in a spicy, warming sauce on a sizzling stone plate.

The flat dumplings with the jjim sauce were an unexpectedly good pairing. Such a little delicacy—I’d never thought of wrapping them in seafood-jjim sauce. I just kept making little wraps. Nearly ordered more, haha.

Outside the restaurant before going in. We arrived right when it opened, so there was plenty of parking. And here’s a little look at the atmosphere inside.

This is the entrance-side parking area and the dining hall. It was weekday lunchtime, and the kalguksu seemed popular too, but this is also the kind of menu that works nicely for a meal out or a work gathering nearby. I was saying how much my own mom would like jjim too, haha.

## Lunch began with refreshing clam soup

It really was the time of year when you start craving a hot bowl of soup. We had debated soup or jjim, but the taster clam soup let us begin with that refreshing broth—ahh. You cook it like this right at the table.

These days, Cheongna Sky Bridge makes getting from Cheongna to Yeongjongdo faster. It’s nice to keep one good seafood-jjim spot around here in mind. We also tend to eat around here when heading into Ganghwado. The more you look, the more concepts worth trying there seem to be; sometimes we enjoy the calm of this weekday hour too.

## The fun of picking out whole squid and algoni

We chose the whole-squid hot-plate seafood jjim as the main, alongside everything in the set. The agu-jjim would probably have been delicious too, right?

True to the name Haemul Teukbyeolsi, this place is known by word of mouth for its generous seafood and jjim sauce. I was happy to see it in Cheongna after the Bucheon Station main branch.

One whole squid had me swallowing twice, haha. It was enough to make us deliberately change our route and stop in Cheongna on the way to Yeongjongdo.

First, we grabbed the tongs and scissors and got the seafood ready to eat. There was more seafood than expected. We thought the small size would be manageable for two, haha, but we ended up leaving without fried rice. If we had been heading straight home, I would have asked about takeaway... but sadly, we just got up and left.

Because the seafood jjim is stir-fried before it comes out, you can eat it straight away. Wrap up warm bean sprouts in the sauce with seafood and take a big bite; it has a little heat, and the clean finish of the jjim sauce left exactly the pleasantly spicy aftertaste I like.

I want to try a slightly hotter level next time, and wrapping the flat dumplings like this was such a treat. Once it starts cooling down, you turn on the heat, so it stays warm throughout the meal—that’s why it’s called a hot-plate seafood set.

There was one whole squid. Once you start cutting it up before eating, you realize the portion really isn’t small.

The cut squid was even in rings, haha. There was algoni, clams, and why were the shrimp so huge too? haha. Normally, when eating seafood jjim, people say shrimp get left until the end because peeling them is a nuisance. But they were too big to leave behind, so I peeled every one—one bite for my friend, one straight into my mouth. After picking through everything so thoroughly, I was so full... If the whole family had come, we might have tried the boneless fried monkfish too. We should come back the next time we head to Yeongjongdo. The location is good too.

## Parking and space for gatherings

Haemul Teukbyeolsi Cheongna Direct Branch is on the first floor. Up to six cars can park in front of the restaurant; if it is full on weekends, you will need to use nearby side-street parking. Its private rooms also made the layout suitable for gatherings, and there was a decent amount of space between tables.

The signature mains are the whole-squid hot-plate seafood jjim set, hot-plate agu-jjim set, algoni-jjim, and seafood soup, etc. When the season changes and the cold wind comes, I’m sure I’ll start thinking about that refreshing seafood-soup broth too. No wonder I had been craving a Cheongna seafood-jjim set, haha. Thanks for a great meal.
