## In short

Susu Yeonnam is a Korean restaurant on Donggyo-ro 38an-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, a short walk from Hongik University Station. Visiting with friends, we ordered four dishes to share: beef brisket sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup) in perilla cream potato broth, grilled deodeok root with perilla oil makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles), chewy beef brisket kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) and sorghum rice with flying fish roe, each with a different texture and aroma. Susu Yeonnam suits a group in Yeonnam-dong that wants Korean food a little different from the usual.

I was looking for somewhere to eat with friends in Yeonnam-dong and ended up at Susu Yeonnam. A lot of the dishes here are a bit different from the usual Korean restaurant menu, so just reading the menu was already fun.

When you hear "Korean food," you usually picture familiar dishes, but this place uses familiar ingredients in slightly different ways for a lot of its menu. We spent ages deciding what to get, then just ordered a bunch of things to share.

When you go with friends, sticking to just one dish can feel like a waste — here it was great to order several and share.

## Beef brisket perilla cream potato sujebi: the standout dish of the day

My favorite dish of the day was hands down the beef brisket perilla cream potato sujebi (hand-torn dough soup)!!

![A bowl of Susu Yeonnam's beef brisket perilla cream potato sujebi](https://img.superchart.com/images/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining-03-19y7y-852.webp)

Just reading the name, it had everything I love in it, so I was already a little excited when I ordered — haha. It's potato sujebi in a perilla cream, topped with beef brisket, and when it arrived it looked even more appetizing than I expected.

![Chewy potato sujebi in the perilla cream soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining-05-ll4k4-1200.webp)

Dishes with perilla can sometimes feel too thick or heavy, but here the nutty flavor really came through instead, which I liked. The potato sujebi in particular was so chewy. The dough had a soft bite with a chewy texture that went really well with the cream sauce. Add the brisket on top and the meaty richness kept shifting the flavor slightly with every spoonful.

The beef brisket is tasty on its own, but eating it with the perilla cream gave it a whole different feel. I generally love perilla dishes, so I probably enjoyed this one even more. We shared it among friends, but I think I ate the most of this one — haha.

Sipping it like a soup, then scooping up a piece of sujebi, then a bit of brisket — I kept going back for more. Honestly, out of everything we ordered that day, this was the most memorable. If you want to try a slightly different kind of sujebi in Yeonnam-dong, this is a solid option.

## What does the deodeok and perilla oil makguksu taste like?

We also ordered the deodeok-grilled perilla oil makguksu at Susu Yeonnam. Just as the name says, it's nutty perilla oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles) topped with grilled deodeok (bellflower root), a combination I was curious about since I'd never really had deodeok and makguksu together before. The noodles weren't too heavy, so it paired well with the other dishes.

There's a subtle perilla oil aroma with a nutty flavor as you chew the noodles, and eating the grilled deodeok in between changes the aroma completely. Deodeok has its own distinct scent, so it was much more interesting than plain makguksu. Especially after eating something richer like the meat or the cream dish, this one felt like a palate reset. If you're ordering several dishes with friends, having something like this to alternate with is a great idea.

The grilled deodeok is seasoned, so it worked better paired with the makguksu than eaten alone. Adding a bit of deodeok on top of the noodles let you taste both the nuttiness of the perilla oil and the deodeok's aroma together — it matched better than I expected. It wasn't the dish I was most looking forward to at first, but it turned out to be a good one.

## Chewy beef brisket kimchi jeon, the easiest dish to share

The chewy beef brisket kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) is not to be missed either. It's not just a plain kimchi pancake — it comes topped with beef brisket, so it's more filling than a typical kimchi jeon.

![A full plate of Susu Yeonnam's chewy beef brisket kimchi jeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining-10-v4hko-966.webp)

The kimchi jeon was crispy on the outside and chewy inside, which I loved, and the brisket added a nutty richness. Between the kimchi's slight tang and spice and the brisket's savoriness, it was definitely more layered than a plain jeon.

![A cut piece of beef brisket kimchi jeon shared among friends](https://img.superchart.com/images/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining-11-e6y0y-966.webp)

We cut it up and shared it piece by piece, and it was great to grab a slice in between bites of other dishes. My friends especially love kimchi jeon, so it disappeared faster than expected — haha. Pancake-style dishes just taste better when shared with a group, I think. Cutting it and eating it right while it was hot brought out that distinctive nutty kimchi jeon aroma too. Thanks to the brisket, it worked more like a main dish than a simple side.

## Sorghum rice with flying fish roe rounds out the meal

Last, we ordered the flying fish roe sorghum rice. When you're eating a bunch of dishes, it felt like we needed some rice, and this ended up fitting in better than expected. The flying fish roe gives the rice a little pop with every bite, and it was great for resetting your palate between other dishes. Being sorghum rice rather than plain white rice, the texture had a slightly different bite too.

It paired especially well with dishes like the kimchi jeon and brisket. We ordered a bunch of dishes and shared them one by one, and by the end we'd had quite a variety. My favorite was the beef brisket perilla cream potato sujebi, but each of my friends had a different favorite. Still, everyone said everything was delicious, so the menu choices were a success — haha.

## Inside Susu Yeonnam: atmosphere and how to find it

Susu Yeonnam had a nice atmosphere for chatting with friends over a meal. Since Yeonnam-dong has so many places with great vibes, I tend to weigh the atmosphere as much as the food when choosing a restaurant, and this place delivered on that front too.

![Interior atmosphere of Susu Yeonnam in Yeonnam-dong](https://img.superchart.com/images/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining/suyeonnam-yeonnam-korean-dining-14-rwxpl-966.webp)

It wasn't too casual or chaotic, but it wasn't stiff or formal either, so it was comfortable to eat in. With the somewhat unique menu, it also felt different from your typical Korean restaurant. It's great for ordering several dishes with friends, and I think it would also work well for a date where you each pick something to try.

The location is convenient if you're already out on a date in Yeonnam-dong, and it's also an easy walk over from the Hongdae area. We came with friends that day, and it was fun wondering "what is this?" as each dish arrived and trying it together. Some of the dish names alone didn't quite let you guess the flavor, which only made it more intriguing — haha.

## Is Susu Yeonnam worth a visit? Overall thoughts

I think this is a great spot in Yeonnam-dong if you want something a bit different from the usual Korean food you'd normally get. Out of everything we had that day, the beef brisket perilla cream potato sujebi was definitely the most memorable. The nutty perilla flavor, the chewy potato sujebi, and the beef brisket together really matched my taste.

The deodeok-grilled perilla oil makguksu was nutty and fragrant, the chewy beef brisket kimchi jeon was great for sharing among a group, and the flying fish roe sorghum rice rounded the meal out and made it filling. My friends said all the dishes we ordered were delicious, so it was a rare day where every menu pick was a win — haha. If you're looking for a place to eat with friends in Yeonnam-dong or a date restaurant near Hongdae, and you want to try Korean food that's a little different from the usual, this place will come to mind.
