A day for a three-generation girls’ gathering with my mom and sister ^^ We drove to Ganghwa for a delicious lunch and a little drive to get some fresh air. By going on a weekday afternoon instead of braving the weekend crowds, the roads were clear and the whole trip felt peaceful and unhurried. This meal was at a duck stir-fry specialist I had reserved in advance after hearing so much buzz about its delicious duck.

## A relaxed weekday visit near Jeondeungsa and Manisan

The place we visited sits toward Yeougogae in Onsu-ri, Gilsang-myeon. It is about a 15-minute drive after crossing Chojidaegyo Bridge, and only around 10 minutes from sights such as Ganghwa Luge, Manisan, and Jeondeungsa Temple, so it was very easy to fit into our itinerary.

### A spacious parking lot, a welcoming exterior, and rice-field views from inside

Thanks to our 11 a.m. weekday opening-run visit, we were welcomed by plenty of dedicated parking and could park comfortably.

Right in front of the restaurant, wide-open views of rice fields and mountains stretched out before us. The quiet, cozy weekday countryside scenery put me at ease before we even walked in. Just looking at the green landscape and breathing the crisp air felt like a proper reset.

With its blue roof, forest, and lush trees, the restaurant gave off the warm, welcoming aura of a great countryside eatery.

By one side of the entrance, tiny, cute succulent pots were neatly arranged.

Once inside, the open rice-field and mountain views through the windows made the room feel wonderfully airy. The tables were generously spaced, creating a tidy, comfortable, and welcoming setting for a meal.

To keep the duck at its freshest and most distinctive, they reportedly age and sell only a fixed amount each day. Once that day’s prepared aged duck is gone, they close immediately, so making a reservation in advance is much safer if you are planning a visit. We had reserved a few days earlier too, and were seated right away without waiting.

## A table filled with neat countryside side dishes

After heading in and settling at our table, we ordered three portions of the signature duck stir-fry.

- Duck stir-fry (₩20,000 per person), 3 portions
- Fried rice, 1 order ₩3,000

As soon as our order went in, the neatly prepared basic side dishes were set on the table one by one.

As it turned out, every one of these was a 100% Korean-made side dish, using sweet potatoes and all sorts of vegetables grown locally in Ganghwa.

![Mild countryside-style basic side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice-16-l4wvt-966.webp)

The side dishes were neither overly seasoned nor harsh; they were mildly seasoned and clean-tasting, with the warm, familiar touch of a home-cooked meal at a countryside grandmother’s house.

## Duck stir-fry with a deep charcoal-fired aroma

This restaurant’s biggest draw was its distinctive cooking method. Fresh duck slaughtered that day is carefully aged for a day in a craftsman’s special sauce, refined through decades of know-how, then pre-grilled directly over a charcoal brazier and brought to the table.

We put it on the table grill, added vegetables, and cooked it a little longer. Perhaps because the gentle charcoal aroma had already soaked in during the pre-grilling, there was no gamey duck smell at all—only a rich, nutty flavor.

I piled a piece of duck onto fresh lettuce with green-onion kimchi, garlic, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), then wrapped it into a big ssam (lettuce wrap). Instant happiness filled my mouth. Hehe.

## A polished meal, right through to the fried rice

![Fried rice with perilla leaves and crumbled seaweed](https://img.superchart.com/images/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice-23-52zwk-966.webp)

We saved about one-quarter of the duck stir-fry for fried rice, then ordered one serving. They added lots of rice, perilla leaves, and crumbled seaweed to the remaining special sauce and savory duck fat, then briskly stir-fried it all together. A gentle charcoal aroma remained, making the fried rice’s nutty flavor and depth stand out even more. We were full, but scraped the pan clean and finished our meal happily.

![Relaxed weekday atmosphere after the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice/ganghwa-duck-charcoal-rice-24-dw5zi-966.webp)

Since it was a weekday, we could enjoy our meal without crowds in a relaxed atmosphere, and all of us had a satisfying time. It is a lovely place to stop for a clean, hearty restorative meal when you are around Jeondeungsa Temple or Gilsang-myeon.
