## In short

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant that makes its own noodles, on Hoguk-ro at Nakdagogae near Wondang in Goyang. Before the meal Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu serves warm buckwheat noodle water as a tea, and the order here was buckwheat mandu split half kimchi and half meat, bibim makguksu and perilla buckwheat kalguksu — the noodles were bouncy yet soft and the perilla broth thick and nutty. ## The buckwheat noodle water served as tea before the meal

At Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, they make their own buckwheat noodles in-house!! So you get to drink the buckwheat noodle-boiling water as tea. It was quite savory and warm, good to have before the meal.

![Menu board at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu listing makguksu, mandu, and suyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-09-cl2be-900.webp)

## Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu menu and what we ordered

The menu had makguksu varieties, mandu (dumplings), suyuk (boiled meat), buckwheat pancakes as side dishes, and warm dishes like hot makguksu and perilla buckwheat kalguksu too. I ordered bibim makguksu, perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and mandu~

![Plate of buckwheat mandu served half kimchi and half meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-12-1m7a2-900.webp)

## Buckwheat mandu you can order half kimchi, half meat

The mandu I ordered came out first. They said half kimchi half meat was possible so I ordered it that way!! Because the dumpling wrapper is buckwheat, it looked even more appetizing!!

![Inside of a buckwheat-wrapped meat mandu packed with meat and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-13-11zzp-900.webp)

The meat mandu was packed full of meat and vegetables in the filling. There was a crunchy-textured vegetable mixed in that made it taste even better!! Dipping it in the soy sauce that came with it was insanely savory... it was soft and slid right down!! The combo with the makguksu was really great too. The aroma was rich, so I loved it!! The dumpling wrapper was buckwheat too so it was chewy and delicious haha

![Buckwheat kimchi mandu showing a spicy kimchi filling](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-14-6b9hi-900.webp)

Here's the kimchi mandu. The kimchi mandu filling had a good balance of kimchi and meat, spicy with a crunchy kimchi bite, a real treat!! This was delicious too haha I recommend getting the mandu half and half!!

![Bibim makguksu topped with ground perilla seeds](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-15-e0zzr-1200.webp)

## Bibim makguksu: plenty of perilla oil is the answer

The bibim makguksu arrived!! It really looked appetizing~ Make sure to pour on plenty of the perilla oil that comes with it~ The nuttiness is on another level.. Loads of ground perilla seeds on top too, so the nuttiness doubled!! Even the owner recommended pouring on the perilla oil!!

![Close-up of bibim makguksu drizzled with perilla oil](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-16-u5f62-900.webp)

First off, the noodles are a work of art. Since the buckwheat noodles are house-made and pulled fresh on the spot, they were bouncy yet soft!! I really don't like chewy tough buckwheat noodles, but these were so soft and digested well too. There was a lot of that distinct buckwheat aroma, which I loved~ The completeness of makguksu comes down to the quality of the buckwheat noodles, and here the noodles were perfect..

![Strands of house-made buckwheat noodles lifted from the bibim makguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-17-4szhe-900.webp)

If you add a little of the broth that comes with it and mix, you can enjoy a moist bibim makguksu!! The bibim makguksu was really delicious!! The seasoning wasn't harsh, just the right amount of spicy-sweet. Add the nutty perilla oil aroma on top of that, and I polished off a whole bowl in no time. This place is genuinely a great makguksu restaurant!! I recommend it to anyone looking for good makguksu in Deokyang-gu, Goyang~

![A warm bowl of perilla buckwheat kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-18-13zr8-900.webp)

## How was the perilla buckwheat kalguksu?

Here's the perilla kalguksu. The weather has gotten a lot cooler these days, and this dish is perfect for when you want to have some warm broth alongside!!

![Thick-cut buckwheat kalguksu noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-19-199p5-900.webp)

First of all, buckwheat kalguksu noodles automatically pass..!! They had more thickness than the makguksu noodles, giving a chewier bite while still being soft!! And the buckwheat aroma was even deeper than in the makguksu.

![Thick perilla broth in the buckwheat kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-20-r3nwh-900.webp)

The thick perilla broth combined with the buckwheat aroma made for deep flavor. The broth was truly on point. It had a mild yet deep taste, so it went well with kimchi and was even better eating it alternately with the makguksu!!

![Makguksu and perilla kalguksu placed together at the end of the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea/bongpyeong-gohyang-makguksu-buckwheat-tea-21-10n31-900.webp)

## Verdict: order both the makguksu and the perilla kalguksu

The perilla kalguksu felt like eating a nourishing tonic dish and warmed up my body. In conclusion, I recommend both the makguksu and the perilla kalguksu..!! Try them together sometime~ I thought this was the best makguksu restaurant near Wondang in Goyang!! Recommended haha The owner was kind and the food was delicious, so it's a place I'd want to visit again.
