## In short

Sip Sam Dae is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Yesulhoegwan Station and Guwol-dong Rodeo Street in Namdong, Incheon. Visiting with her boyfriend, the writer ordered the ₩86,000 A Set — 500g of ugalbi (premium marinated beef ribs), 300g of thick pork belly, and a large doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice stew) — with staff grilling and smoking the meat tableside under a dome lid. One A Set for two was so generous that even the closing rice stew left them stuffed.

My boyfriend said he wanted meat, so I went looking for a good barbecue spot in Guwol-dong and ended up at Sip Sam Dae. It's close to Guwol-dong Rodeo Street and Yesulhoegwan Station, so public transit works fine too, but we drove this time.

There's parking behind the building, but it was already full when we arrived. While we were figuring out where to park, the owner came out himself and showed us a spot in back, so parking wasn't a hassle after all.

We'd booked ahead so our table was ready, but the moment we stepped inside, the vibe was different from what I expected of a barbecue place.

## Sip Sam Dae in Guwol-dong: location and parking

Sip Sam Dae sits near Yesulhoegwan Station on Incheon Line 1 and Guwol-dong Rodeo Street.

If you drive, you can use the building's basement lot or the parking space behind the restaurant, in front of a designer hotel.

## Is this really a BBQ place? Sip Sam Dae's interior

Walking in, my first thought was, is this really a barbecue place? haha

![Sip Sam Dae's hall with a restaurant-like atmosphere](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-05-39pyj-966.webp)

Usually a barbecue place brings to mind smoke and the smell of oil, but Sip Sam Dae was spotlessly clean overall, and a wall lined with wine bottles gave off more of a restaurant feel than a Korean BBQ joint.

![Wine bottles lined up along the wall](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-06-1gbdd-966.webp)

![Sofa-style seating arranged on both sides of the hall](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-07-nv09z-966.webp)

There's a walkway down the middle of the hall with tables set on both sides. The seats are sofa-style with high backs that act almost like partitions, splitting up the space. It's not a fully separate room, but the neighboring tables didn't bother us, so it was easy to chat with my boyfriend while eating.

I thought it would be a good spot for a date over meat, and since the atmosphere isn't too casual, it would also work well for a meal with parents.

## Sip Sam Dae's A Set menu and price

Looking at the menu, Sip Sam Dae offers more than just ugalbi — there's two-plus grade hanwoo, wagyu, Iberico black pork, and more.

![Menu listing ugalbi and hanwoo sets](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-09-1u0al-966.webp)

We wanted to try a bit of everything, so we ordered the ₩86,000 A Set.

- Ugalbi 500g
- Thick pork belly 300g
- Doenjang sulbap (large)

With 800g of meat total plus the rice stew, it was a pretty generous portion for two people.

The drinks menu was more varied than I expected too — not just Kirin draft, but craft beers and wines as well.

Since I was the only one who could drink that day, I ordered a ₩7,000 glass of Kirin draft beer.

## Banchan and scallion salad

![Table set with lettuce and scallion salad banchan](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-12-1koxy-966.webp)

Lettuce, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), pickles, radish pickles, potato salad, and scallion salad — a neat spread of side dishes to go with the meat.

My favorite was the scallion salad. At first I thought of it as just a basic side to eat with meat, but after one bite I couldn't stop going back for more. The owner came by and explained that his parents grow the scallions used in it themselves (whispered, of course). He told us stories about the meat and side dishes cheerfully, and hearing it all made me feel like this place puts real care into the banchan, not just the meat.

## First look at the A Set: ugalbi and thick pork belly

A little later, the ugalbi and thick pork belly came out on one plate.

![Ugalbi and thick pork belly served on one plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-13-1kulg-966.webp)

Even before grilling, what caught my eye first was the marbling in the ugalbi. The long strips had visible marbling running through the meat, and the pork belly was noticeably thick.

I like thick pork belly, but I'm not a fan of cuts that are too heavy on fat. Sip Sam Dae's thick pork belly, though, looked like it had a good balance of lean meat and fat even before it hit the grill.

### Staff grill the ugalbi for you

What was nice about Sip Sam Dae was that the staff grill the meat for you.

A staff member laid the long strips of ugalbi on the grill and cooked them while watching the state of the meat closely. (They also grilled potato, pineapple, and king oyster mushroom alongside the meat, all cooked to a nice finish ><)

We didn't need to keep flipping the meat or checking if it was done — we could just chat while we waited.

Once it was cooked enough, they covered it with a dome-shaped lid to smoke it. As the meat cooked, herb aroma and charcoal smoke rose together, giving off a different scent than meat grilled directly over charcoal.

The owner also showed us how to eat it, so for the first bite we tried it with just salt or wasabi.

![First bite of ugalbi with salt and wasabi](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-16-6td7f-966.webp)

My boyfriend said the salt combination was the tastiest. Biting into the ugalbi released juices with a faintly sweet flavor, and he said the salt just lightly seasoned it, letting the meat's own flavor come through more haha

I preferred dipping it into Sip Sam Dae's special soy sauce. It's soy-based but not overly salty or sharp — a nicely balanced sweet-and-savory flavor, so even dipping the meat in deeply didn't overpower the ugalbi's flavor. If anything, it added more umami, and my chopsticks kept going back to it.

Eating it with the tangy-spicy scallion salad was a totally different combination again haha. The salt was good, the special sauce was good, and the scallion salad worked too, so in the end I couldn't pick just one lol

### Why only half the grill has charcoal

There was one more thing that surprised me while eating. Looking under the grill, the charcoal wasn't spread evenly — the heat was concentrated on one side only. At first I wondered why the charcoal was split like that, but once the meat was cooked, I understood why.

The staff member moved the well-cooked meat away from the strong heat to the other side. It's off the direct flame but still on the grill, so it doesn't overcook and get tough, letting us eat every last piece warm.

Eating the grilled pineapple, potato, and mushroom in between was a nice way to reset our palate rather than just eating meat nonstop. While we worked through the ugalbi, they kept grilling the thick pork belly alongside it.

## How was the thick pork belly?

The thick pork belly went on the grill wide and thick.

After browning it on both sides, they cut it into bite-sized pieces for us.

![Thick pork belly cut into bite-sized pieces](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-19-uri26-966.webp)

Once cut, the thickness was even more obvious. Eating it, the texture had a satisfying chew while the meat itself was tender.

![Cross-section of well-browned thick pork belly](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-20-90pj7-966.webp)

Most of all, the lean-to-fat ratio that caught my eye when I first saw the meat turned out even better once I tasted it.

![A piece of thick pork belly with lean meat and fat mixed together](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-21-194e4-966.webp)

I usually get sick of pork belly that's too fatty pretty quickly, but here the fatty part wasn't overly soft or greasy — it leaned more toward nutty and savory.

There was also a subtle herb and smoky aroma running through it, giving it a different flavor from the ugalbi we'd just had.

Being able to eat both ugalbi and thick pork belly together made the A Set work well for us, rather than sticking to just beef the whole time.

## Finishing with doenjang sulbap

Last up was the doenjang sulbap. After grilling the ugalbi, they said they pick off the meat left on the rib bones and simmer it into the rice stew.

When it arrived, there was way more in it than I expected — rice, tofu, mushroom, vegetables, and meat, with a broth that leaned slightly spicy rather than just heavy on doenjang.

![Doenjang sulbap loaded with ingredients](https://img.superchart.com/images/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly/guwol-dong-a-set-woodae-galbi-pork-belly-22-8qfro-966.webp)

Every spoonful brought up a good chunk of meat too. By this point we'd already eaten 500g of ugalbi and 300g of thick pork belly, so we were both genuinely stuffed... but our spoons kept going for the rice stew haha. Saying we were full and then taking one more spoonful, then another...

It had plenty of meat and a slight kick, so we scraped the bowl clean to the last bite. With two of us sharing the A Set, the meat portion was generous, and by the time we finished the doenjang sulbap, we felt like we might burst haha

## Final thoughts on Sip Sam Dae, a Guwol-dong BBQ restaurant

Sip Sam Dae was the barbecue spot in Guwol-dong we found because my boyfriend wanted meat. It was a bit of a shame that only I got to have a glass of draft beer since we drove this time. Since corkage is available, next time I'm thinking of bringing a bottle of wine I like to pair with the beef.

If we come back, next time's mission is wine and ugalbi.
