## In short

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a gogi guksu (pork noodle soup) restaurant right in front of Gwakji Beach in Aewol, Jeju. On a rainy day with a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old, two bowls of rich bone-broth pork noodles, chive pork sundae and a bowl of rice came to 36,000 won, and the noodles stayed firm through a long, slow meal. Handam Guksu is a good place to eat a filling lunch before playing in the water at Gwakji Beach.

Our third day in Jeju. After a fun visit to the Teddy Bear Museum's teddy bear safari, we were heading up to Gwakji Beach for a swim when it started raining, and suddenly all we wanted was a hot bowl of soup. So we decided to fill up on lunch first at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a local favorite for pork noodle soup (gogi guksu) in Aewol.

> Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch / Tuesday–Sunday 10am–8:30pm, break 3:30pm–5:30pm / Monday 10am–4:20pm (no break) / Last order 40 minutes before closing

## Where Handam Guksu is: right in front of Gwakji Beach, and parking

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a local favorite for pork noodle soup in Aewol, sits right across from Gwakji Beach.

There's room for about two cars right in front, and if you park at the nearby Landy's Donut you get 1 hour of parking support.

## Ocean-view windows: how easy is it to sit with kids?

A clean, spacious restaurant where the ocean view through the full-length windows really grabs your attention. Adding sea views to your meal makes you feel like you're truly in Jeju.

The tables are big with plenty of space between them, so even with a baby chair set up, we never bumped into neighboring tables and could eat comfortably. Baby chairs were available too, and there were plenty of families with kids around.

## What we ordered at Handam Guksu and the 36,000 won total

We ordered right at the table. Rich bone-broth pork noodle soup for two, ₩20,000, chive pork sundae (Korean blood sausage), ₩15,000, and a bowl of rice, ₩1,000 — ₩36,000 in total.

Kimchi, dried radish, and other side dishes are self-serve at the bar — sides that paired really well with the pork noodles.

## How the rich bone-broth pork noodle soup tastes

That deep, rich bone-broth flavor without a greasy aftertaste lingering in your mouth — a broth that goes down smoothly without feeling heavy...! It was exactly the kind of pork noodle soup we wanted, and we both nodded in agreement after the first bite. Personally I can't handle pork noodle soup when the broth is too heavy or has a strong pork smell, but Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch's version had none of that, which I really appreciated.

![Close-up of bone broth and meat toppings](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-12-16mkl-966.webp)

![Noodles lifted with chopsticks from the pork noodle soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-13-7dadn-966.webp)

The meat had no gamey smell and was tender, so it went down easily together with the noodles.

The bone-broth pork noodle soup paired wonderfully with the crunchy bean sprouts, the pickled dried radish, and the kimchi too.

### The noodles stayed firm through a slow meal with toddlers

Another reason Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is such a good pork noodle spot in Aewol: eating with kids inevitably takes a while, but the noodles never went soft, so we got to enjoy every bite right to the end — that made me genuinely happy.

![Portion of pork noodle soup and rice set aside for a child](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-18-15b89-966.webp)

For the kids, we mixed in a little rice with the pork noodle broth and gave them some noodles on the side, and they ate way better than expected. Seeing them eat so well made the meal at Handam Guksu even more satisfying.

![A plate of chive pork sundae](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-20-1npq8-966.webp)

## Chive pork sundae: a main dish, not a side

We ordered the chive pork sundae (Korean blood sausage) thinking of it as just a side dish. Packed with chives and pork, with a subtle smoky flavor, the first bite made quite an impression.

![Cross-section of sundae packed with chives and pork](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-21-j21zh-966.webp)

![Chive pork sundae picked up with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-22-gkg9f-966.webp)

Soft and moist with a slight saltiness, it's tasty on its own and pairs well with the pork noodle soup too. There's a mysterious pull that keeps you reaching for it with your chopsticks. Great with a beer, and good enough as a side dish for rice that I even stole a spoonful from the kids' bowls.

![Chive pork sundae eaten together with pork noodle soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-23-1qmwe-966.webp)

It's not a side dish — it's just a genuinely delicious main, so if we come back, I'm ordering it again without a second thought.

![Sign noting the local Jeju sundae maker behind the chive pork sundae](https://img.superchart.com/images/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles/handam-noodles-aewol-gwakji-pork-noodles-24-6kyu5-966.webp)

Turns out the reason it's so good is that it comes from 'Namju Food & Bibari Sundae,' a local Jeju sundae (Korean blood sausage) maker now in its second generation. I seriously wondered if there's any way to buy this on the mainland.

## Is Handam Guksu a good lunch before swimming at Gwakji Beach?

Warm, rich bone-broth pork noodle soup, chive pork sundae that kept pulling us back for more, and the Jeju sea right outside the window. The portions are generous too, so it made for a filling, satisfying meal before a swim. If we come back to the Gwakji Beach area, this is the kind of place that would make me crave pork noodle soup again. If you're looking for a good pork noodle restaurant in Aewol or a spot near Gwakji Beach during your Jeju trip, the pork noodles plus chive pork sundae combo at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is worth a meal.
