## In short

Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch is a 15-year-old dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken bites) shop inside Jayang Traditional Market in Gwangjin, Seoul, an 8-10 minute walk from Guui Station. One box of mild and one of soy-sauce dakgangjeong at 9,000 won each plus a canned cola came to 20,000 won, and the boxes were wrapped in aluminium foil so the chicken was still warm at home. With bone-in fried chicken at 9,900 won and old-style whole chicken at 7,000 won, market prices are the biggest draw at Mr. Kim's Chicken.

I'd been craving crispy, sweet dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites) lately, so I searched for good spots near my neighborhood and heard there was a seriously great-value place in Jayang Market near Guui Station — so I went!

Turns out this place has 15 years of history and is already famous as one of Seoul's three great family-run dakgangjeong shops. The generous market spirit, the prices, the taste — all of it left me super satisfied. Here's my takeout review of Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch.

## Finding the shopfront beside Gates 4-5 of Jayang Traditional Market

Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch sits near Gates 4 and 5 inside Jayang Traditional Market.

Maybe because it was a hot summer day, there was a cool mist spraying at the entrance haha.

The sign right by the market entrance catches your eye, with prices right there on the banner. A whole chicken for under 10,000 won, is that even real?!

The savory smell of fried chicken and sweet sauce drifts from far away, so you can find it without even checking a map app. By the time I got there, a few people were already waiting for takeout.

Through the shop window: freshly fried, golden old-style whole chicken, drumsticks, wings, and drums.

Piles of boneless dakgangjeong were visible too, and the visual alone got my appetite going.

## Menu and prices at Mr. Kim's Chicken, from 7,000 won whole chicken up

Looking closely at the menu board, I was shocked. Given today's chicken prices, these numbers feel unreal. Bone-in fried chicken is ₩9,900 a bird, old-style whole chicken is ₩7,000, and dakgangjeong comes in a range of sauces (mild / medium spicy / spicy / soy sauce / plain fried), in medium, large, and extra-large sizes.

There are small portions great for eating alone or with one other person, and bigger sizes for groups. I debated which flavor to get and ended up going with the two most classic, popular options.

They also sell a variety of sauces — ₩500 each!

## Origin labels and how ordering and packing work

The origin label was posted clearly on the storefront — whole chicken and drumsticks are domestic, while wings and boneless cuts come from Thailand and Brazil. Seeing them honestly disclose origins built a lot of trust.

As soon as I ordered, the owner tossed the hot, freshly fried boneless chicken with soy sauce and seasoned sauce and packed it firmly into a box. Watching it get tossed up close, that sweet-salty smell was insane.

The box was carefully wrapped in aluminum foil, which kept it warm the whole way home.
